February County 4-H Council Meeting The next County 4-H Council Meeting is scheduled for: Thursday, February 15, 6:30 pm at the Extension Office Everyone is welcome to attend but, please be especially sure to send your County 4-H Council Club Voting Representatives! 4-H Good Standing Requirements Members, parents and leaders, do you know exactly what 4-H members need to do to be in good standing? Do you know what the good standing requirements are? If not, please take a moment to check these out now. Don t wait until before the fair (or other event/activity) when you may not have enough time to meet the requirements. Remember, a 4-H member in good standing is one who has met the following requirements: Enrolls in a 4-H Club by February 1, 2018. Attends at least 40% of all club meetings held between October 1, 2017 and the date of the event or activity. Some 4-H Clubs require members to attend at least 50% of club meetings. So, be sure to check with your 4-H Club leader for the minimum number of club meetings you are required to attend to be considered in good standing. Follows the NM 4-H Conduct and Behavior Expectations of Youth and Adults. Horse Project Save the date! Horse school is tentatively scheduled for June 4-7 at the New Mexico State Fairgrounds. This year we will be adding a horseless track for those youth that do not own or cannot bring a horse. More information will be available closer to the event. The Schedule for sanctioned 4-H Horse Show scheduled so far is: Bernalillo County- April 14, 2018 Taos County- June 9, 2018 Dona Ana County- June 23, 2018 De Baca County- July 14, 2018 Quay County- July, 21, 2018 State Fair- TBA Horse Certificates! The Horse Certificates need to be done every year, or renewed every year with approval of the County Agent. The horse cert. is a form similar to a registration form. You can find it on the 4-H website under forms & publications. They are Due on May 1 to the Otero County Extension Office. Our county requires those 4-H members in the Rodeo project to submit horse certificates as well. Page 2 Otero County 4-H News

4-H Regional Livestock Schools The Small Farms Task Force is planning a junior livestock school on June 8-9, 2018, at the Santa Fe Co. Fairgrounds in Santa Fe, NM. Areas to be covered are: Swine, Lamb, & Goat. More information will be available at a later date. A southern regional Livestock school is being planned in Artesia, NM at the Eddy County Fairgrounds. The date for this school is June 16-17. Areas to be covered are: Swine, Lamb, Market Steer & Market Goat. More information on these regional livestock school will become available in the near future. 2018 Guide for Livestock Exhibitors The requirements for showing Junior Livestock in New Mexico can be found on the New Mexico 4-H Website http://aces.nmsu.edu/4h/ or the New Mexico Livestock Board website https://www.nmlbonline.com/ February 2018 Page 3

Shooting Sports Projects Hunter Education All 4-H members must complete a hunter education class before they are eligible to participate in shooting sports practices and contests. 4-H members participating in practices and contests need to submit a copy of their hunter education card and completed 16-17 4-H release form to the Extension Office if they have not already done so. For additional information regarding hunter education classes or to register for a class go to the NM Game and Fish website: http://www.wildlife.state.nm.us/education/hunter_ed/. What: 2018 Youth Get-Away Theme: Adventure Into 4-H: Find Your Wild Side When: April 20-22, 2018 Where: Glorieta Camp, Glorieta New Mexico How much: $145/person Save the Date: During the weekend, participants will have a chance to learn about a variety of projects including wildlife, rabbits, Fun with Food, recreation, entomology, leadership and many other activities. Also, youth will participate in a community service project. YGA is scheduled for April 20-22, 2018, at Glorieta Camp, Glorieta, New Mexico. Youth will be broken down by age group, Novices with Novices, and Juniors with Juniors. The registration fee is $145 for participants and chaperones. The officers look forward to spending the weekend away with youth at YGA! County Registration Deadline: March 5th, 2018 at the Extension Office by 5:00 pm. Community Service Scholarship Criteria Available to any Novice, Junior or Senior 4-H Member serving as a State 4-H Officer, Ambassador, Diplomat or participant in a 4-H activity Must submit a New Mexico 4-H Community Service Scholarship application form which is available on the website. Senior Leadership Retreat 2018, hosted in Las Cruces, NM. Otero County had Six Youth participate this year from the Mescalero and Alamogordo 4-H clubs. Our Six Otero County 4-H members got a full college experience this weekend at NMSU. From Dissecting a trout with the Fish and Wildlife Degree track, to attending a NMSU women s basketball game. Youth were able to tour the New Mexico Farm and Ranch Heritage Museum and meet with other New Mexico 4- Hers from across the state. The Arizona state leadership team also known as J.O.L.T. provided workshops and the guest speaker was world champion poet! Page 6 Otero County 4-H News

2018 Fair Indoor 4-H Exhibit Classes All 4-H members who enrolled by February 1st of this year are eligible to enter indoor 4-H exhibits at the Otero County Fair. As you prepare your 4-H exhibits for the County Fair be sure to follow the standards outlined in your 4-H project books and the 2018 general rules of the Otero County Fair 4-H Exhibits Department. The 4-H Exhibits Department General Rules and a complete list of exhibit classes will be available from the Extension Office or can be downloaded at the website, http://oteroextension.nmsu.edu, beginning in early February. If you have any questions regarding indoor 4-H exhibits please contact Kelly at the Extension Office, 437-0231. NM Home Economics Schools The annual NM 4-H Home Ec Schools will be held March 9-11, 2018 in Belen, NM. The schools are designed for Novice and Junior 4-H members (Seniors may serve as junior instructors or rec team members) interested in learning skills related to home economics projects and finding out about 4-H project opportunities in NM. This year seven schools (tracks) will be available: Beginning Sewing; Aero-Science; Welcome to 4-H; Basics of Jewelry Making; Favorite Food Show Star; New Mexico 4-H Weaving; and Outdoor Cooking (Juniors only). The cost is $80 per Novice or Junior 4-H member to cover the cost of meals and workshop supplies. Adult Volunteer 4-H Leaders will be needed to serve as chaperones and assist with transportation to and from Home Ec Schools. There is a $40 fee for adults to cover the cost of meals. This event will be a lock-in, that is to say that members and chaperones will spend the night in the gymnasium and utilize the locker room facilities. Registration is first come, first serve and the schools have limited space in each track. If you miss the cutoff, you will be placed on the waiting list. Registration forms are available from the Extension Office. Completed registration forms and fees must be received in the Extension Office no later than February 9, 2018. Senior 4-H members may apply to serve as a junior instructor or a rec team member. Applications for Seniors may be found on the State 4-H website, http://aces.nmsu.edu/4h (click on the link titled State Events, then the Home Economics School link). The deadline for Seniors submitting applications is February 15th. Seniors will be under the direct supervision of the School Instructors and do not require a separate chaperone. There is no registration fee if a Senior youth is selected to serve, however a parent/guardian is responsible for their travel to and from the event. Required Paperwork Steer or Heifer All heifers entries must provide a copy of bill of sale or statement from breeder that show their birthdate. All county bred steer entries must provide a copy of a bill of sale from a county breeder or statement that the steer was bred, born, and raised in Otero County. Please bring COPIES of these documents as they will be kept to attach to the entry forms. If you have more than one animal on a bill of sale, you need to bring one copy for each animal.
