Only 30 days until Spring! Bates County was wellrepresented at the West Central Regional Energizer on Saturday January 27. 4-H members and family members got to experience a lot of different activities, some from our own county a painting class by Carla Armentrout and Shannon Crawford; Life after 4-H by Reba Colin; and Western Heritage Shooting Sports by Monica Hoenshell and Crew. Notes It was a great day with over 400 4-Hers and their families! This month s newsletter is full of dates and information that will be helpful as we hit the ground running working on community service efforts, as well as working on our projects. As we continue to be intentional in our endeavors to help the young people in Bates County, let s keep in mind to represent 4-H in all aspects head, heart, hands, and health. January Calendar 7 On March 10-11, a team of 12 University of Missouri students will travel to Bates County for a weekend of service learning throughout our county. Mizzou students will work with 4-Hers in our 48 Hour Initiative for a weekend of service; a lifetime of impact. Please contact the office no later than March 1 to let us know how many of your 4-Hers in your clubs, as well as parent volunteers, will be helping on Saturday, March 10. More information will be coming your way as soon as it is available. University of Missouri, Lincoln University, U.S. Department of Agriculture & Local Extension Councils Cooperating Equal opportunity is and shall be provided to all participants in Extension programs and activities, and for all employees and applicants for employment on the basis of their demonstrated ability and competence without discrimination on the basis of their race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, national origin, age, disability or status as a Vietnam-era veteran. 4-H Foundation Scholarships Available In 2018 thanks to generous donor support, the Missouri 4-H Foundation will offer over 50 college scholarships ($500 - $2,500/scholarship). 4-Hers who are current high school seniors and former 4-Hers who are college students are eligible to apply. The scholarship guidelines and application is available on the Missouri 4-H website at http://www.4h.missouri.edu/recognition/. Check with your local Extension office for the local application due date. Scholarships are due to the Bates County Extension Office by February 15. Check out the list of scholarships on the 4-H scholarship website and apply! The scholarship application format is almost identical to the 4-H Missouri Recognition Form (MRF) format. If you complete the MRF form, you ve completed most of the narrative for the scholarship application, too. Don t forget to work on your Project Record for at least one project this 4-H year. Next year you will have to complete a project record for ALL of the projects in which you are enrolled. News n Notes provides 4-H and youth information to families of Bates County. One Great Fair At the December 2017 Fair Board meeting, some changes to the existing structure of the Bates County Fair were discussed. In an effort to do the most good for all kids involved, the following things will take effect during the 2018 Bates County Fair: 4-H Evaluation Day will be moved to Monday, July 9 The reason: To allow FFA members to show in-building projects. Currently FFA Districts is also on Tuesday of the fair when 4-H has Evaluation Judging. If we move that to Monday, even though the Fair hasn t officially started, it would allow those 4-H/FFA members to do both. All inbuilding evaluations would be done that day, there would be no rush, judges could take their time, and FFA members could also compete at their District Fair. 4-H County Council Officers will serve lunch on the July 9th during Evaluation Day. We ll keep it simple; hot dog, chips, water, and a cookie. County Council Officers + a couple of adults will be working our concessions. Hot dog=$1; chips=$.50; water=$1; cookies=$.50. We will sell items individually or sell for a $3 meal deal. The 4-H Horse Show will be moved to 8 am on Tuesday, July 10, to open up the Fair. This way we won t have scheduling conflicts with the Beef Show. Fashion Revue will move to Tuesday, July 10, tentatively 12 pm 4 pm; with Fashion Show (15 to 20 minutes only) at the Bates County Bash following the Little Miss & Mr. Bates County. The Talent Show and Super Teens immediately after that. 4-H County Council will sell drinks during the Bash water, soda, tea, and Powerade. 4-H Demonstrations will continue to be on Wednesday, July 11, at 4:30 pm in the Youth Building. 3 University Extension BBQ Chicken Dinner fundraiser with Entertainment Wednesday, July 11, 5 pm 8 pm. This will be INSIDE the Bingo Pavilion this year. All 4-H Clubs will take turns supervising the Youth Building exhibits during the Fair. We are at a time where we need to watch exhibits more closely. We had several items broken or messed with last summer. Be watching for additional changes in the upcoming editions of the News & Notes. *Careful consideration has been given to these adjustments to the fair. I talked with the Committee Chairs that would be involved in the changes prior to the Fair Board meeting and they were in agreement. If you have any questions, please contact me at 660.679.4167 or at Eckhoffr@missouri.edu.

CLOVER KID CORNER Cricket Thermometer Crickets are sensitive to changes in air temperature and chirp at faster rates as the temperature rises. It is possible to use the chirps of a cricket to gauge temperature. Catch or buy a cricket and put it in a jar. Count the number of times the cricket chirps in 15 seconds. Add 40 to this number. The number you get should be the air temperature in degrees Fahrenheit. Source: Cricket Thermometers, Field and Stream, July 1993, Vol. 98 Issue 3, p21. Deadline for submitting newsworthy information (including photos) is the 15th of each month. Newsletter will be published on or by the 25th of the month! 4
