CHAPTER 1 ANNA S BAD IDEA On Monday morning, homeroom was noisier than usual. Everyone had something to say about the seventh-grade dance. The dance is a big deal at Pine Tree Middle School. It was our first school dance ever. Students had to organize and run the entire dance. Everybody was talking about it. It has to be a formal dance, Anna said. What s that? Carly asked. Fancy dresses, pretty corsages, and elegant decorations. Anna s eyes lit up as she talked. And a band that plays real dance music, like my cousin had at her wedding. Several kids groaned. Jenny Pinski made a face. - 9 -

Are you kidding? Adam asked. He looked horrified. He s been one of my best friends since third grade. I could tell he thought a formal dance was a terrible idea. No, Anna said. I ve been taking ballroom dance lessons. I want to use what I ve learned. Why make everyone else suffer? Monica asked loudly. She s another one of my best friends. She s not afraid to say what she thinks. Becca, my other best friend, doesn t like to stir up trouble. She whispered to Monica and me, Anna doesn t care what anyone else wants. Becca was right about that. Anna is selfish, spoiled, and extremely popular. When she doesn t get what she wants, she makes everyone wish they had given in. So Anna almost always gets things her way. This time had to be different. The dance was too important to the entire seventh grade. We couldn t let Anna ruin it. - 10 -

A casual dance would be nice, I said. With a D.J. that plays music we like. That would be fun, Monica said. Ballroom dancing is fun, and it s totally cool, Anna argued. Don t you ever watch dance contests on TV? Monica shook her head. No, she said. That sounds totally boring. The bell rang, and we all took our seats. All right, everyone. Who wants to be on the dance committee? Ms. Stark asked. Anna raised her hand. I do. I have some great ideas. Me, too! Carly exclaimed. She does everything Anna does and agrees with everything Anna says. I never agree with Anna. I raised my hand. And me! I said. I nudged Monica, and her hand shot up. Then Becca raised her hand, too. I crossed my fingers. If the five of us were on the dance committee, the vote would be three against two. - 11 -
