While RHP Connor Jones started his night with 4.1 no-hit innings against the Naturals, the Cardinals struck in the 3 rd with an RBI single from CF Thomas Spitz and in the 4 th with a solo shot from 3B Evan Mendoza. The Naturals got on the board in the 5 th, but a SS Tommy Edman solo home run in the 6 th opened the Springfield lead to 3-1. However, the Naturals again came back, this time tying it with RBI singles from RF Elier Hernandez and LF Anderson Miller in the 6 th. Springfield, though, reclaimed the lead in the 8 th on a sac fly from Edman and an RBI double by Mendoza, before LHP Colton Thomson slammed the door with a pair of shutout stanzas in the 8 th and 9 th. 1 st -Half Battle The Cardinals moved back into a tie with the Arkansas Travelers for 1 st place in the North Division with just 11 games remaining in the First Half. Meanwhile, the Naturals are in 3 rd, just 2.0 games back, and the Tulsa Drillers are in 4 th, only 3.0 games out of 1 st. The First Half Champs in both divisions earn a guaranteed playoff berth. Evan almighty One day after being named the Cardinals Minor League Player of the Month for May, 3B Evan Mendoza cracked his first Double- A home run, along with an RBI double, in a 2x4 night on Thursday. The 21 year old has hit safely in nine of his last 10 games, batting.351 (13x37) with one homer, a double, a triple and seven RBIs. After leading the Cardinals system with a.339 average last year, he is currently 2 nd in the system with a.333 clip this year between High-A Palm Beach and Springfield, only trailing his former NC State teammate, C Andrew Knizner (.336). Thomas on a tear With another base hit on Thursday, OF Lane Thomas extended his hitting streak to seven games, hitting.387 (12x31) with four homers and 11 RBIs while collecting his first two career multi-home run performances on 6/2 and 6/5. The Knoxville, TN native has now hit in 11 of his last 12 games, batting.346 (18x52) with four homers, two doubles and 15 RBIs during that stretch. With the recent power surge, Thomas is 2 nd in the Texas League with 13 home runs this year, only trailing Cardinals OF Victor Roache (15). Steady Eddy INF Tommy Edman also extended his hitting streak to nine games with a solo blast on Thursday, and is hitting.359 (14x39) during his streak. The San Diego, CA native has now hit safely in 13 of his last 14 games, tallying a.350 average (21x60) with three homers, 11 RBIs, three doubles and 14 runs during his excellent stretch, increasing his average from.239 to.269 since 5/21. Knocking Northwest 1B Chris Chinea has had a terrific series, going 6x12 with a homer, two doubles, three RBIs and six runs scored through the last three games. The Miami, FL native has hit safely in 10 of his last 14 games, going 14x57 with three homers and nine RBIs during that stretch.
