The Cubs woke up on May 27 with a 26-22 record and in fourth place in the N.L. Central, 4.5 games behind first-place Milwaukee and half a game behind secondplace St. Louis and Pittsburgh thanks to a 29-16 (.644) run starting May 27, the Cubs have clawed their way back to make up 7.0 games on the Brewers and take a season-high 2.5 game division lead into the second half. Chicago reached 55 wins prior to the All-Star Break for just the third time, having also done so in 1969 (61 wins) and 2008 (57). Last year, the Cubs took a 43-45 record into the Break and did not reach 55 wins until July 29 (55-48) in Game 103 this year, the Cubs reached 17 games above.500 in Game 93 on July 15 last year, the Cubs did not reach 17 games above.500 for the first time until Game 149 when they were 83-66 on September 17. WE LL BECOME FAST FRIENDS: The Cubs emerge from the All-Star Break with eight of their first 12 games against the St. Louis Cardinals following this five-game set, the Cubs host Arizona for four games starting Monday before heading to Busch Stadium for three games, July 27-29, as part of a five-game six-day trip to St. Louis and Pittsburgh (two games starting July 31). MID-SUMMER CLASSIC HAPPENINGS: Willson Contreras (starting catcher via fan vote) belted a solo homer on the first pitch he saw while Javier Báez (staring second baseman via fan vote) went 1-for-3 on Tuesday as the N.L. All-Stars fell to the A.L. squad, 8-6 Jon Lester was named to the N.L. All-Star Team but was ineligble to pitch since he started the Cubs game last Sunday in San Diego. Kyle Schwarber reached the final round of Monday s Home Run Derby, falling to Bryce Harper, 19-18 Schwarber s 55 total homers were the most of any competitor this year and second-most in Derby history behind only Giancarlo Stanton s 61 in 2016 Báez fell in the first round to Max Muncy, but hit the longest homer in the Derby at 479 feet. SECOND HALF SPLENDOR: In the last three seasons since 2015, the Cubs have amassed a 149-73 record in the second half, and the team s.671 win percentage is by far the best in the baseball Cleveland is second with a.615 (136-85) in the second half since the start of 2015. WHEN WE LAST SAW YOU: Chicago on Sunday completed a 4-2 west coast swing through San Francisco (1-2) and San Diego (3-0) with a 7-4 victory over the Padres for the team s sixth series sweep this season. With 10 hits on Sunday, the Cubs have now recorded double-digit hit totals in 12 of their last 17 games since June 26 at the Dodgers the team has a.377 on-base percentage in that span. BRINGING THEIR WORK HOME: The Cubs own the best record in the National League at the All-Star Break despite having played the fewest home games in the majors to date the Cubs are 28-15 (.651) in 43 games played (38 to go) at home, a mere.001 behind Philadelphia (30-16,.652) for the best home mark in the N.L. this season. Chicago has won 13 of its last 16 home games since June 6, including a 9-1 stretch starting with June 19 s nightcap vs. the Dodgers. THIS IS ENTIRELY OFFENSIVE: The Cubs emerge from the Break leading the National League in runs (476), team batting average (.265), on-base percentage (.345) and OPS (.771) the Cubs are the second team in a row to lead the N.L. in all four categories at the Break, joining last year s Washington Nationals prior to last year, an N.L. club had not turned this trick since the 2013 Cardinals. A year ago, the Cubs ranked 11th in the N.L. at the Break with 399 runs, 14th with a.239 team batting average, 10th with a.326 OBP and 10th with a.744 OPS in 2016, the Cubs ranked first with 460 runs, seventh with a.256 team batting average, first with a.348 OBP and second with a.786 OPS. With their.771 OPS, the Cubs currently have a 14 point lead on Colorado (.757), the next closest N.L. club. ON THE FLIP SIDE : The Cubs have also allowed the fewest runs of any team in the National League this year with 362, nine fewer than next closest Los Angeles (371) this is the first time the Cubs have allowed the fewest runs in the N.L. at the All-Star Break since the 2004 club led the league by allowing only 345 runs at the Break. WHAT S THE DIFFERENCE?: The Cubs are the only team in the N.L. with a positive triple-digit run differential, leading the way at +114, which also ranks fourth in the majors behind only Houston (+188), Boston (+163) and the Yankees (+131) the Dodgers are the next closest N.L. club, 32 runs behind, at +82. The Cubs were 16-15 with a +21 run differential through May 6 since May 7, the Cubs have gone 39-23 with a +93 run differential, outscoring opponents 329-236 during that stretch. SWEET RELIEF: Brandon Morrow on Sunday recorded his 22nd save of the season, tied for sixth-most in the N.L. Morrow is the first Cub to reach 22 saves in the season s first half since Kerry Wood saved 24 games prior to the 2008 All-Star Break. Cubs relievers have a 3.09 ERA (119 ER/346.2 IP) this season, the second-best mark in the N.L., trailing only Arizona (2.83). THIS IS BETTER THAN AVERAGE : Albert Almora Jr. ranks third in the N.L. with a.319 batting average Almora is the first Cub in the top five in the league in batting average at the All-Star Break since Derrek Lee in 2007 (fifth at.330)... Lee is also the last Cub to rank better than fifth at the Break, as he led the N.L. with a.378 batting average at the Break in 2005. QUITE THE FEAT WITH THE BAT AND THE FEET: Javier Báez wrapped up the season s first half with a.292 average, 25 doubles, six triples, 19 homers, 72 RBI and 18 stolen bases in 91 games he is only the second player in franchise history to reach 19 homers and 18 steals prior to the All-Star Game, joining outfielder Sammy Sosa with 27 homers and 18 stolen bases prior to the Break in 1996. Báez is just the fourth player ever to reach 20 doubles, 15 homers, five triples, 60 RBI and 15 stolen bases prior to the All-Star break he joins the Giants Willie Mays in 1960, the Rockies Carlos Gonzalez in 2013 and the Pirates Andrew McCutchen in 2014. Báez s 72 RBI lead the N.L. and are second in the majors (Boston s J.D. Martinez, 82) he is the first Cubs middle infielder to reach 72 RBI prior to the Break since shortstop Ernie Banks had 76 RBI prior to the All-Star Break in 1960. Projected over 162 games, Báez is on pace to record 44 doubles, 31 homers, 32 stolen bases and 125 RBI this season.
