PC looks to rebound from a loss at Charleston Southern last Saturday and hope avoid the series sweep by the Bulldogs this season. Last Time Out PC fell to Charleston Southern 52-34 last Saturday at the Buccaneer Field House as the Bucs led wire-to-wire. Taylor Petty led the Blue Hose in the loss with nine points on 3-for-8 shooting from beyond the arc. The sophomore guard pulled down eight rebounds and added an assist, a block, and a pair of steals. Riley Hemm followed Petty in scoring with six points, while Rebecca Walker and Aianna Kelly each contributed five points. PC shot 12-of-45 (26.7 percent) from the floor, 7-of-28 (25.0 percent) from beyond the arc, and 3-for-5 (60.0 percent) from the charity stripe. The Bucs held PC to only five points in the third quarter. The mark ties PC s lowest-scoring quarter this season. The Bucs held the advantage in points in the paint (16-8), points off turnovers (19-13), second-chance points (12-5), and fast-break points (2-0). PC s bench did outscore CSU s 20-10. PC Rankings in the Big South Presbyterian leads the conference in free-throw percentage (75.5), three-point field goals attempted (557), three-point field goals made (158), and three-point field goals per game (7.5). The Blue Hose are third in turnover margin (+0.95). Scouting the Bulldogs UNC Asheville fell at High Point 81-70 on Saturady afternoon at the Millis Center. The Bulldogs shot 27-of-57 (47.4 percent) from the floor, 6-of-14 (42.9 percent) from deep, and 10-of-19 (52.6 percent) from the line. Chatori Major leads the team with 16.3 points per game, followed by Khaila Webb with 14.8 points and KJ Weaver with 11.6 points. Major is the top shooter from long range with 32 three-pointers on the year. Weaver leads the team on the glass with 8.6 boards per game. The Bulldogs lead the conference in fewest turnovers (296) and turnovers per game (14.1). UNC Asheville is shooting 41.4 percent from the field, 32.3 percent from deep, and 67.2 percent from the free-throw line. Series History Saturday s game marks the 22nd meeting between the two programs. UNCA leads the all-time series 12-9 and has taken the last five meetings. The teams met earlier this season on January 24 at the Templeton Center. PC tied the game late, but could not overcome an 11-0 run as UNCA held on for the 67-60 win. Janie Miles scored 14 points to lead the Blue Hose in the loss, followed closely by Salina Virola with 13 points. The game featured three ties and eight lead changes. Next Time Out PC returns to the Templeton Center this Saturday, February 11 as the Blue Hose host Liberty in the team s annual Play4Kay game. Storey has converted on 85-of-215 shots (39.5 percent), including 21-of-85 (24.7 percent) from behind the three-point line. She has also made 58-of-72 (80.6 percent) free-throw attempts. Storey recorded a 19-point, 10-assist double-double against UNCG on December 15. Storey Named Big South Player of the Week Cortney Storey was named the Big South Player of the Week on December 19, her second honor this season. The junior guard is the first PC player to receive multiple Big South Player of the Week awards. Storey recorded the first double-double of her career, scoring 19 points with 10 assists to help lead the Blue Hose to a 69-62 victory at UNCG on December 15. She added eight rebounds. The Preseason All-Big South selection leads PC in points per game (11.9), assists (86), steals (42), free-throws made (58), and minutes played (35.8) and is third in rebounds (74). Jacking Up the Threes The Blue Hose set a season high with 15 three-pointers in a 78-39 win at Winthrop on January 21. Kacie Hall, Rebecca Walker, and Aianna Kelly each made three shots from long range. The 15 deep balls are a Division I program record, besting the previous high of 14 in a February 1 home win over Longwood last season. The Blue Hose made 13-of-37 shots from beyond the arc in a 65-55 conference win over Longwood on January 3. PC hit 11 three-pointers in a win at N.C. Central and made 10 three-pointers in back-to-back games against Charlotte and Texas Southern. It was the first time in the program s Division I era that PC had managed double-digit three-point makes in consecutive games. The Blue Hose connected on 10-of-34 threes against the 49ers, before going 10-of-22 from behind the three-point line against the Tigers in the Puerto Rico Classic. PC had taken no fewer than 13 three-point attempts before a loss at Gonzaga and took at least 19 in five of six contests. The team has managed 30 or more attempts eight times this season. Improved Passing Helps Offensive Efficiency In back-to-back games against Virginia Tech and Charlotte, PC recorded 25 assists on 38 made field goals, a percentage of 65.7. In its first two contests, the Blue Hose managed just 15 assists on their 32 made field goals, 46.9 percent. On the year, PC has assisted on 231 of its 385 field goals (60.0 percent). PC and TSU Head to Overtime PC pushed Texas Southern to overtime on November 25 but ultimately fell to the Tigers in overtime, 74-62, in the Puerto Rico Classic in San Juan, Puerto Rico. It was PC s first overtime game since February 24, 2015, when PC defeated Charleston Southern, 56-48, in North Charleston, S.C. The Blue Hose did not play an overtime contest at all last season. On the Road Again, Again and Again Presbyterian concluded a seven-game road trip on December 20 that put it on the road for over a month. It was PC s longest stretch of games away from home since the start of the 2009-10 when the Blue Hose opened the season with eight straight non-home games. Six of the eight were true road games with a pair of neutral site games at the Morehead State Invitational. The last time that PC went at least a month between home games came in 2007-08, PC s first season reclassifying to D1. The Blue Hose did so twice that year, Jan. 8-Feb. 16 (six straight road games) and Nov. 15-Dec. 18 (seven straight road games). A New Era Todd Steelman was named Presbyterian College s seventh women s basketball head coach on April 27, 2016, and is the program s second coach since moving to Division I beginning with the 2007-08 season. Steelman is in his first season as a head coach at any institution. Steelman comes from the University of Maine where he spent four seasons as associate head coach. Last Season in Quick Review The Blue Hose turned in a historic season in 2015-16, making a run to the Big South tournament semifinals for the first time in school history and sits second in Division I school history with 18 wins. The team finished first in PC DI history in points (1,880), threepoint field goals made (217), scoring average (60.6), field goals made (650), free throws made (363), free throw percentage (.727), offensive rebounds (369), steals (258) and scoring margin (6.8). The team put a school record four players on the Big South All-Conference teams, including claiming the Big South Freshman of the Year for the second straight season. Cortney Storey set a school record with 126 assists in the season, while Salina Virola now sits in first with a.489 three-point percentage. Taylor Petty holds second with 354 points and third with 74 threepoint field goals, both are the most by a freshman in school history. Same Five Presbyterian returns all five starters (and nine letterwinners) from the 2015-16 season. Rebecca Walker, Cortney Storey, Aianna Kelly, Janie Miles and Allie Wagner all return to lead the way for the Blue Hose, with 2015-16 Big South Freshman of the Year Taylor Petty, Kendra Talley, Kaycie Reffner and Salina Virola also returning to help fill out the roster. PC Names New Interim AD Presbyterian College named Edward W. Steers to serve as Interim Director of Athletics on January 27. Steers is replacing former AD Brian Reese, who stepped down after nearly six years at PC to serve as the new AD at Lander Univesity. A 1968 graduate of The Citadel, Steers served as AD and Physical Education Chairman at Porter-Gaud School in Charleston until his retirement in 2014 and is currently an adjunct professor at The Citadel. 2016-17 Honors Preseason All-Big South Cortney Storey (2nd) Aianna Kelly (2nd) Taylor Petty (2nd) Opponent G G G G F Indiana Miles Petty Reffner Storey Walker USC Upstate Miles Petty Reffner Storey Walker Virginia Tech Miles Petty Reffner Storey Walker Charlotte Miles Petty Reffner Storey Walker Texas Southern Miles Petty Reffner Storey Virola East Carolina Miles Petty Reffner Storey Virola Gonzaga Miles Petty Reffner Storey Virola UNCG Miles Petty Reffner Storey Virola N.C.
