SCULPTURE JULY 2017 BROCHURE
The natural world is endlessly fascinating and beautiful - it will alway be my main source of inspiration.
ANTHONY SMITH A fascination for Natural History has been the constant driving force in Anthony s life and career. Inspired by the works of Charles Darwin, he studied Zoology at Cambridge University, specialising in Animal Behaviour and Evolution. Upon graduating in 2005 he set up his first sculpting studio and began creating his limited edition bronze wildlife and human figure sculptures. Travel is an essential part of Anthony s work - only by observing an animal in its natural habitat is he able to truly capture the essence of that animal. To this end, Anthony has travelled all around the world studying and photographing wildlife, in recent years spending many months in the Arctic and Antarctic observing an incredible range of beautiful birds and mammals.
BRONZE CASTING Anthony casts his sculptures in bronze using the ancient process known as lost wax casting. Together with a high-skilled foundry team, Anthony creates a mould of his original sculpture, which is used to produce a perfect, hollow wax replica. This wax sculpture is then carefully coated inside and out with a fireproof ceramic, to be placed in an oven. The wax melts away and it is into this remaining space that the molten bronze is poured. Once the metal has cooled the ceramic is broken apart to reveal the sculpture. The bronze is then meticulously cleaned and prepared for the final stage patination the addition of colour through the application of heat and various chemicals. Finally, the bronze sculpture is complete! These sculptures are all hand-made, and Anthony works on every stage of production himself, as well as overseeing the work of the foundry to ensure that every sculpture lives up to his high personal standards.
PATINAS Anthony takes particular pride in his unique and highly diverse range of patinas. Each special colour palette is painstakingly developed and executed to compliment the form and texture of the sculpture, as well as highlighting something about subject itself. Due to the complex, multi-stage process involved in creating these patinas, no two are ever exactly the same each sculpture is therefore unique, with its own, subtly distinct colour and character.
PUBLIC COMMISSIONS Anthony undertakes commissioned sculpting projects for private individuals as well as major public institutions. Former clients include the the Natural History Museum of London, Royal Amsterdam Zoo, the National Botanic Garden of Wales, Cambridge University, Winchester College, and the Royal Mint.
