The Buffaloes have broken the 100-point barrier in their last two games wins over Texas-Arlington and Saint Mary s but will face a Cal defense that is allowing just 66.2 ppg. In fact, the Bears have kept three of their last four opponents under 60 points Texas (57), UC Irvine (56) and Cleveland State (54). However, Cal has struggled on the offensive end, averaging only 63.4 ppg and shooting 39.8 percent from the floor. So far, it s been hard to pinpoint the problem area. At UC Irvine last week, the Bears were 9-for- 19 from three-point range (47.4%), but just 9-for-28 from inside the arc (32.1%). Last Tuesday against Cleveland State, Cal shot 2-for-15 on three-pointers (13.3%), but 16-for-32 on two-point tries (50.0%). Overall, senior forward Sean Lampley continues to pace Cal in both scoring (16.2 ppg) and rebounding (8.6 rpg). He tied a season high with 22 points vs. Cleveland State and is the only Bear averaging in double figures. Lampley ranks 13th on the school career scoring chart (1,252 points) and has moved into ninth in career rebounds (708). In addition, Lampley became the third player in school history to register at least 1,000 points, 600 rebounds and 200 assists Tuesday night. In addition to Lampley, Cal also needs strong performances from centers Solomon Hughes and Nick Vander Laan. Hughes, who leads the Bears in field goal shooting at 68.4 percent (13-19), had 10 points in 18 minutes vs. Cleveland State. Vander Laan ranks second to Lampley in rebounding with 7.2 per game. On the outside, junior Ryan Forehan-Kelly and sophomore Joe Shipp are tied for team honors with seven three-pointers apiece, while point guard Shantay Legans has 20 assists with only nine turnovers. In Tuesday s CSU game, Legans did not have a turnover in 32 minutes of action. In 1999-2000, Cal set a school home attendance record by averaging 10,708 fans. Cal Coach Ben Braun Ben Braun (Wisconsin 75), who was named the 14th head coach in Cal history on Sept. 15, 1996, is in his fifth year in Berkeley and 24th season as collegiate head coach. His record at Cal stands at 77-53, while his career mark, which includes 11 years at Eastern Michigan and eight seasons at Siena Heights College, is 410-288. The 1997 Pac-10 Coach of the Year and a finalist for 97 National Coach of the Year honors, Braun has led the Bears to the postseason three times in his first four years. After taking Cal to the NCAA Sweet 16 in 1997, he guided the Bears to the NIT championship in 1999 and to the NIT quarterfinals last season. In October 1997, he agreed to a new eight-year contract that extends through the 2004-05 season. At EMU from 1985-96, the three-time MAC Coach of the Year guided the Eagles to three NCAA Tournaments and one NIT appearance with an overall record of 185-132. He was also 148-103 from 1977-85 at Siena Heights. A native of Chicago, Braun played one year of basketball at Wisconsin-LaCrosse before transferring to Wisconsin-Madison, where he earned a teaching degree in English with a minor in African-American studies in 1975. He received his master's degree in guidance and counseling from Siena Heights. Colorado Scouting Report A Look at Colorado (5-2) Colorado, which beat St. Mary s Wednesday night, 105-61, comes into this Saturday s play averaging 94.4 ppg, including a 119-75 victory over Texas-Arlington last Saturday. Cal-Colorado Series History Cal owns an 8-5 series lead over Colorado, despite an 80-62 loss in Boulder last Dec. 4. In CU s most recent appearance in Berkeley, Cal won, 70-54, on Jan. 2, 1989. Colorado Head Coach Ricardo Patton Ricardo Patton is in his sixth season at Colorado, compiling an 80-64 record with the Buffaloes. He has led CU to a pair of NIT appearances and one NCAA Tournament berth. Last year, he guides Colorado to an 18-14 overall mark. The win snapped Cal s three-game losing streak and improved the Bears record in Haas to 10-1 against non-conference opponents the last two years. Against CSU, Cal fell behind by eight points in the first half before rallying to tie the score at the break at 27-27. After intermission, the Vikings again took an eight-point lead when the Bears went on a 10-0 to go ahead for good at 39-37. In addition to Lampley, Solomon Hughes added 10 points on 5-of-6 shooting from the floor. Lampley Joins Exclusive Club After scoring 22 points, grabbing eight rebounds and dishing out a pair of assists against Cleveland State Tuesday, senior Sean Lampley became just the third player in school history to register at least 1,000 points, 600 rebounds and 200 assists. Entering the Colorado game, Lampley has 1,252 points, 708 rebounds and 201 assists. The others in the group are Roy Fisher and Doug True. From Dec. 5-30, the Bears will play six games in Haas Pavilion and one contest in the Oakland Arena. After opening the year at home, an 83-76 overtime victory over Mississippi State in the Preseason NIT Nov. 13, Cal lost three straight times on the road at Texas, at Saint Louis and at UC Irvine. In contrast, the Bears have won their last five games in Haas Pavilion overall, including Tuesday s win over Cleveland State, and are 10-1 against non-conference opponents in Berkeley since Haas opened last fall. Forehan-Kelly Now Second on 3-Point List Junior Ryan Forehan-Kelly, who has made 7-of-18 three-point attempts this season, has moved into second place on Cal s career three-point percentage list. He briefly took over the top spot last week, but an uncharacteristic 0-for-5 performance vs. Cleveland State dropped him to No. 2 behind Billy Dreher (43.1%). As a result of his strong play this year, Forehan-Kelly earned his first start at UC Irvine last weekend and remained in the opening lineup against CSU. A former walk-on who earned a scholarship during the offseason, he paced the Bears with 13 points at Texas Nov. 15. For the year, he is averaging 7.8 ppg and is second on the team with five steals. But he certainly had a big impact on the game with a career-best 11 assists. Perhaps more importantly, Legans committed just a single turnover in 36 minutes of action. He also made his only two free throw attempts of the night, going 2-for-2 with 11 seconds left to put the game out of reach. Although he struggled in Cal s next two contests at Texas and Saint Louis, he came through with a season-high 16 points at UC Irvine (6-11 FG, 3-6 3P, 1-3 FT). Walk-on Diggs Sees Significant Action Freshman point guard A.J. Diggs, a walk-on from Long Beach Poly HS, did not play in Cal s first two games. But in the Bears last three contests, he has seen significant action. After getting in for seven minutes at Saint Louis, he was Cal s first player off the bench at UC Irvine, finishing with three points, five rebounds and one assist (no turnovers) in 13 minutes. Diggs also played five minutes against Cleveland State. Throughout Ben Braun s tenure as head coach at Cal, the Bears have consistently had a strong walk-on contingent. In fact, three walk-ons have gone on to earn scholarships, including current players Ryan Forehan-Kelly (now a starter) and Morgan Lingle. Lampley Earns Preseason Honors Cal senior forward Sean Lampley, an All-Pac-10 forward in 2000, received his share of honors prior to the start of the 2000-01 season. Athlon has chosen him first team All- Pac-10, while Basketball News calls him the No. 7 banger in the country. Foxsports.com s Frank Burlison lists Lampley as the No. 9 power forward in the country, saying: There isn't a more economically efficient front court player in the West he gets his numbers without too much fuss and muss despite usually playing against taller and heavier opponents. The MVP of the 1999 NIT when Cal, Lampley could become the Bears first two-time All-Pac-10 selection since Jason Kidd and Lamond Murray in 1993-94. Gates to Graduate in 3 Years Dennis Gates may be in only his third year at Cal, but the junior guard is on track to graduate this May with a degree in sociology. Gates has already taken his GRE exam and is planning to attend Cal s Graduate School of Education next season. As a high school senior, Gates was the Chicago All-Academic Player of the Year at Whitney Young HS in 1998. Miscellaneous Notes Ben Braun has been chosen the preseason Pac-10 Coach of the Year by Athlon Cal had three players Sean Lampley, Solomon Hughes and Nick Vander Laan attend the Pete Newell Big Man Camp over the summer Cal s OT win over Mississippi State Nov. 13 was the Bears first overtime victory since beating Washington State, 77-75, in 2OT on Jan. 23, 1997... 6-3 guard Ronnie West, younger brother of former Cal star Kevin Johnson, has joined the squad as a freshman walk-on.
