ENGAGE EMPOWERING LEAGUE 2015 A WHEELCHAIR BASKETBALL COMPETITION ENGAGE is a not-for-profit organization established in 2011, working to promote the volunteerism among the youth of the country. ENGAGE promotes the inclusive volunteering for the disabilities of the people through the sports playing. ENGAGE provides opportunity of building the relationship between youths and peers with disability. ENGAGE have been working in the project Coaching 4 Fun (C4F) i.e. youths volunteers to coach the wheelchair user to play wheelchair basketball. For few years ENGAGE have provided several volunteers who coaches in different wheelchair basketball teams. ENGAGE have provided coaches for Jawalakhel Team, Jorpati Team, B.I.A. Team and Wheelchair Sports Basketball Association (WSBA) Team. C4F project has following objectives:- Coaching: - C4F provides the young coaches for the wheelchair basketball teams. The coaches are trained through the experience people of the respected field. Build Relationships: - C4F helps to build a casual and professionals relationship between the youths and wheelchair users. Youths and wheelchair users get to know each other better and work together as a group. Enjoyment: - Beside teaching and building a relationship among the volunteers and wheelchair user, ENGAGE wants both of them to enjoy the sport and utilize their free time to learn something new. 1
The League ENGAGE have planned to start a league among the 9 wheelchair teams active within the Kathmandu valley i.e. ENGAGE Empowering League. This league will be offer a promotional platform to enhance the visibility of wheelchair basketball in Nepal. Still many people are unaware of the ability of wheelchair users to play competitive and exciting basketball. The league will also have the role of creating awareness among the society at large. The ENGAGE Wheelchair Basketball League will also be a motivational factor to acknowledge the efforts of the Para- athletes currently involved in wheelchair basketball. Teams Participation All teams within the Valley and nearby areas will be invited. Overall the intention is to have the participation of 6 Male teams and 3 Female teams are: - MALE Teams:- 1. Jawalakhel 2. Jorpati 3. Army 4. B.I.A. 5. W.S.B.A. 6. SIRC FEMALE Teams: - 1. Jorpati A 2. W.S.B.A The Organizing Committee Six members of the ENGAGE team are selected as the organizing team for running the League. They will be responsible for all the activities related to the League. Coordination Committee at each Team Each Team will appoint their captain to be part of the Coordination Committee under the overall coordination of ENGAGE Project Manager. The objective of the Coordination Committee will be to ensure the smooth implementation of the League. Regular meeting before the star will be held as per needs. Schedules The League will be conducted for 9 days/times (only Saturdays). Altogether there will be total of 18 matches (including both matches of Male and Female teams). There will be 2 matches in one Saturday starting from 8am 9am and second match from 9am - 10am. Starting and Ending date Tentatively the League will start on 28 th of November 2015 and ends of January 2016. 2
Transportation Transportation cost for each team will be provided for each game. The amount set to cover the transportation costs is i.e. Rs 1,500/- for each game. Prizes Prizes will be provided to the winner and runner up. The winner will be awarded with a Running Shield that will be passed on to the winner of the next edition. In addition certificates will be distributed to all the players. Equipments The following material will be provided: Glucose Water, Stationary Product, Game ball, Stopwatch Referee whistles Logistics at court level The hosting team will be responsible to arrange the court especially according to pre-determined standards fixed by ENGAGE. In particular way the hosting team would be responsible for arranging table, chairs and arrangement for water distribution (to be funded by ENGAGE). Advertisement at local level It is important that each hosting team will work to ensure a good involvement of local communities. ENGAGE will support the promotion by taking care of banners for each team and leaflets. ENGAGE will also take care of communication with the media. Mobilization of Volunteers The initiative will be held thanks to the mobilization of volunteers. Volunteers from ENGAGE Sport Coaches, ESCs and also from Friends of ENGAGE and other volunteers involved at personal level will be mobilized. Volunteers will be involved as: -Referees -Medicinal -Registration -Water Management: - Official duties (scoring) -Other Logistics 3
Overall there will be 10 volunteers to be mobilized in each game in addition to 6 referees involved in each game. Referees The referees will be given training by the senior coaches. ENGAGE set specific requirements in order to be eligible to qualify as referees: - All undertook an orientation session They all have played Basketball for minimum of 5 years. They have in depth knowledge on the rules of the basketball game. Experience of coaching and referee are more preferred. Time availability for all the games.
