Spring Fling Mixed Doubles - Sun, Apr 27 Stow away your snow shovel, hooded parka, and earmuffs; Spring is bursting out all over. To commemorate this glorious event SMTC is hosting a mixed doubles king of the hill format social tournament at Reed Park on Sunday, April 27. Enter on your own and you will be paired with a partner. At the end of each round the winning team moves up a court while the losing team stays on the same court. After each round the players switch partners. After five rounds the man and woman with the most games won will receive a prize. This is an opportunity to meet new club members. Entrants will either play in the morning or afternoon. To enter fill out the enclosed form and mail no later than Saturday, April 19. Send the form and a check made out to SMTC for $10 along with a large stamped self addressed envelope to: BOB SHUBERT, P. O. BOX 335, SANTA MONICA, CA 90406. USTA Spring Leagues The USTA Weekend Spring Leagues are beginning in April. We have places available for men and women on 3.0 teams. Play will run into mid-june. You would not need to play in every match. Two matches would be the minimum. Players need to be USTA members. Join the USTA at http://national.usta.com.the matches are played on courts throughout West Los Angeles. Please call Phyllis or Chris at: 310-457-1227. Palm Springs Riviera A group of active tennis players visited again the Riviera Hotel and Racquet Club in Palm Springs. The weather couldn t have been nicer and the view from the tennis courts with the snowcapped mountains in the background, palm trees in front, sunshine and 80F degree. Some of us went to watch close-up tennis at the Pacific Life Open in Indian Wells, where it was possible to walk on all the courts and watch the top women and men players warm-up, practice or compete. Annual Dudley Cup Dear SMTC Members, Santa Monica will host the annual Dudley Cup Tournament April 14th-18th. This event attracts top junior players from all over the State. This year the Tournament is being directed by SMTC member Bill Nissley. Bill has requested that any club members able to volunteer to act as linesmen, assistant directors ect, to please call the Dudley Cup Tournament hotline at (310)458-8920. Palm Springs Riviera (continued from page 1) and men s doubles in the afternoon. We did not keep scores, but overall Mary Durkin reported some good results, as well as Mike Germroth and Ron Elmer. The team Ron Elmer and Chris Clarke was the overall winner on the men s side. It was good to see Marguerite Jorgensen playing again. Please mark your calendar for the next trip to Casa Via Mar on June 13-15, 2003. For those members that are new to SMTC or those that have forgotten, players can collect Grand Prix points throughout the year to be eligible for year-end prizes. SMTC tournaments are divided into Major tournaments, Minor tournaments and Social tournaments. Points are awarded to those players that place from the finals down to the quarterfinals in Major and Minor tournaments. No Grand Prix points are awarded for Social tournaments. The tournaments that earn Grand Prix points include, among others: CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS - Major SINGLES ROUND ROBINS - Major TEAM TENNIS - Minor ANNIVERSARY DOUBLES - Minor Grand Prix points can also be earned by challenging on the various SMTC ladders. How do I resolve this dilemma? - A bereft tennis player Dear Bereft, Since I always hit the ball as hard as I can, I admit I m having a tough time with your situation! As I see it, you have two options: 1. Hit the ball really hard, but aim for the side fence to ensure that you don t injure anyone - your girlfriend will assume that you re trying your best and tell you to stick to what you know, and switch to your old game. 2. Carol Katz (4.0) Notes From the Ladder Director This month's Ai Sugiyama award, named for the pro who played (and won) two singles and two doubles matches on the same day recently, goes to Tom Jonides. Immediately after playing two hours of doubles, he played a two-and-a-half hour challenge match against me, losing 8-6 in a third set tiebreak. He did this at age 72. Catch this match on ESPN Classic. The rest of you can play classic matches too. If you have a telephone, you can set up a ladder match.
