Scheme Drake is a four man front, six man box, two high defense. The Bulldogs do not blitz at a high percentage, but play within their base scheme and rely on superior technique and their personnel to make plays. They are predominantly an 80/60 front defense, and play a mix of man and zone coverages. Their pressure includes both zone blitz and straight man. They will slant and angle the line and bring two backers off one side and also blitz six or seven and attempt to outnumber the blocking. Coverages include a mix of Cover 4 and Cover 3 concepts including Cover 6 and 3 Club, as well as straight man, Cover 1 and Cover Red (man outside, zone inside). They doubled the when he was single into the boundary last year, by placing an outside backer pressed and playing the corner over the top. Personnel Drake returns nine starters from last year's 8 3 team, including three of four linemen, all three linebackers and both corners. The very experienced defense includes four 5th year seniors, two true seniors and five juniors. The front four are big, strong and talented, including preseason All American defensive end Dain Taylor (6 3, 2 # 95) and monster nose David Witkiewicz (6 6, 286 #58). Both were starters last year and are extremely disruptive in both the run and pass game. They are joined by new starters Andrew Asbell (6 5, 265 #93) and John Sawhill (6 3, 267 #90). All three linebackers are 220lbs or more, and 5th year senior Ben Morrison (6 2, 226 #54) is the leader in the middle. The only new starter in the secondary is junior free safety Matt Buckley (6 0, 189 #6). is fellow safety is junior Akeem Campbell (6 2, 192 #27). Both corners are seniors and good sized at 5 11 and 6 0. Coaches Chris Creighton is in his third season at Drake, carrying a 15 10 record. Prior to Drake, he was the head coach at Wabash College and Ottawa University in Kansas. e owns a career head coaching record of 109. The new defensive coordinator is Tom Allen, who comes to Drake from Lambuth University in Tennessee. Allen is only in his fourth season as a college coach, as he was the head coach at Benjamin Davis igh School in Indianapolis from 2004 to 2006, where he posted a 25 12 record. Defensive line coach Casey Carlo and cornerbacks coach Mark Watson are new to the staff. Kyle ork, safeties coach and recruiting coordinator is in his second season at Drake.
Strengths Drake is an extremely veteran defense, led by many returning juniors and seniors. Their front seven is as stout as their is in the Pioneer League, and with five returning starters at the second and third levels, there are few holes in this defense. They are relatively vanilla scheme wise, and play within their system. The Bulldogs held Valparaiso to just 158 total yards last week. Weaknesses Despite so many returning starters, the Bulldogs are surrendering over 27 points per game through four contests. Playing Montana State from the Big Sky Conference doesn't help their numbers, but they also surrendered 28 points to Lehigh from the Patriot League, 14 points to Division 2 Missouri S & T, and 19 points to Valpo. The only position that can be identified as a potential weakness is the secondary, with a new starting free safety.
