South Riding Golf Club Newsletter JANUARY 2008 Rick Fisher Assumes Chairmanship Golf Committee Formed, 2008 Planning Underway First, I would like to express my gratitude to Ken Kramer for returning in 2007 to serve as the first chairman of the new SRGC Golf Committee (which itself was created out of the ashes of the old South Riding Golf Association). Ken was instrumental in getting the Committee on its feet and in establishing a solid working relationship between the membership and the professional staff. The next time you see Ken, please stop and offer him your thanks for all that he has done for SRGC. As I approach my sixth golf season as a member, I ve been given the honor of leading the Golf Committee in 2008. Our Committee makeup looks quite similar to 2007; myself, Dave Ambrose, Bill Denfeld, and Sam Kessler all are returning, and we will be joined this year by Mike Pfalzgraf. The five of us and Willy have already begun working - and will continue to work throughout the year to make this golf season the best it can be for everyone here at SRGC. I know there will be things we as a Committee do with which you will disagree receiving unanimous approval from everyone for every decision is, of course, impossible. I will pledge that we will always try to do what is in the best interest of the greatest number of members at all times. There will also be things we as members will wish to do, but will be unable to because the club will say no. Willy and Mike have a responsibility to the owners to produce a target amount of revenue, an amount that simply cannot be derived solely from the members. This is why the public play and outings continue as a necessary evil, at least from my view, and I suspect from yours as well. Finally, there will be some things for which we as a Committee will have absolutely no input or opinion. Mostly these relate to day-to-day operations, personnel, billing, and so on. If you have an issue in any of these areas, you will need to discuss with Willy and/or Mike on your own. We are currently putting together the plan for the 2008 golf season. If there is something you wish the Committee to consider entry fees, food & beverage policy, tournament dates, recommending more bunker rakes, recommending less bunker rakes, anything NOW IS THE TIME TO SPEAK UP! We cannot promise your suggestion will be implemented, but we can promise it will be considered if we receive it in time. I prefer emails to phone calls just as a practical matter; if I m in town, I m usually checking my email several times per day (although I don t have a Blackberry Crackberry or an iphone like some people ). My email address is rdfish126@gmail.com, so please use it! I hope you re as excited about the upcoming season as I am, although I m excited because I get to be a defending champion of something for the first (and probably the last) time see you around the Club. The mats and the first 400 dz. balls are scheduled to arrive around April 1st. The new GPS monitors have been installed in all of the golf carts. A few bugs remain to be resolved in the system. Things Get Smokin at Champions Dinner The 2007 Champions Dinner was held on Friday, January 11th at the Club. The winners of all events and their spouses were invited to attend a special dinner in their honor. The event really got exciting when the Club s fire alarm went off during cocktails. It turned out that Jon Fulton was grilling steaks and chicken outside, near an open door, and the smoke came through the door and set off the alarm. Unfortunately, nobody knew how to turn it off. Within minutes, a dozen hungry firefighters and two large trucks arrived at the Club. Calm was eventually restored and the champions and their spouses enjoyed a wonderful meal. General Manager Mike Maloney filled in as master of ceremonies for head PGA professional Willy Lutz who was a bit under the weather. Mike presented trophies and plaques to the winners of the major tournaments and recognized all the tournament winners. Among those recognized at the dinner was Phil McQuitty, the 2007 Club Champion.
