Baa Atoll Project Hanifaru Training Guidelines

Baa Atoll Project All six resorts in the Baa Atoll have come together with the local communities to form a working group to target environmental issues. The group meets regularly and aims to help protect and conserve the Maldivian flora and fauna, while supporting and promoting the sustainable development of our Atoll. This presentation contains the training guidelines implemented to safeguard one of the world s most precious and spectacular natural underwater events: Mass Feeding Aggregations of Manta Rays and Whale Sharks at Hanifaru

Research Projects at Hanifaru Maldivian Manta Ray Project www.maldivianmantas.com & www.saveourseas.com The project was established in 2005 to study all aspects of the Maldivian Manta Ray Population: Photo-Identification as a Scientific Tool: Database of over 1500 individual mantas identified using each mantas unique spot patterns With over 900 individuals sighted in Baa Atoll and over 800 from Hanifaru Satellite & Acoustic Tagging Cooperation and Collaboration with the Ministry of Fisheries and other Manta Scientists Maldivian Whale Shark Project www.maldiveswhalesharkresearch.org Discoveries to Date: Using Photo-Identification, over 600 Sightings of just 110 identified sharks have been recorded 95% of the sharks are immature males The individuals seen at Hanifaru are the same sharks which are seen in South Ari Atoll Huge percentage of the population with anthropogenic related injuries (harpoons, nets, boat strikes, finings). Scientific information gathered by these projects is being used by the Government to implement protective measures to safeguard these animals within the Maldives

Hanifaru: Manta Rays & Whale Sharks Hanifaru is one of the worlds best places to see these amazing animals. People from all over the world visit this site to see these graceful giants. The Resorts of Baa Atoll have a responsibility to protect and preserve Hanifaru for the future benefit of all. Therefore we, the Baa Atoll Resorts, have established a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) which lays out the agreed guidelines for everyone to adhere to when visiting Hanifaru. The resort will provide these Hanifaru Guidelines in a laminated format for both the staff and resort guests while on excursions to Hanifaru

Hanifaru: Code of Conduct These next few slides lay out this Code of Conduct which we expect all our staff to adhere to as ambassadors of this site. A Busy Day at Hanifaru If correctly managed and respected Hanifaru will become a safer and more enjoyable place for our guests, and the wildlife which they are there to see.

Hanifaru Map Hanifaru is a small enclosed reef system with only one main entrance channel Hanifaru is situated close to the islands of Dhonfanu, Daravandhoo and Kihaadhuffaru

Hanifaru Guidelines Boats ENTERING and LEAVING the Hanifaru area MUST reduce their speed and have a staff member at the front of the boat looking out for animals and swimmers on the surface. Should mantas or whale sharks be spotted, the boat must keep a safe distance of 20 meters away from animals and people. Once in Hanifaru, boats MUST leave the bay area where the animals are feeding and anchor in the shallow sandy lagoon. If the animals are near the Small Thila, snorkellers can be dropped in the water at a safe distance; then the boat MUST move to the anchoring site. Snorkellers MUST swim back to the boat. If mantas are spotted at the entrance of Hanifaru, snorkellers can be dropped and picked up at a safe distance from the animals.

Hanifaru Guidelines There should be a maximum of 5 boats anchored in the designated area. In order to avoid an excessive number of boats at Hanifaru, resorts and dive centres should communicate with each other to avoid overcrowding the area. (Snorkelling boats from Valtur: 12:15-13:00 / Reethi Beach: 15:00-16:00 / Soneva Fushi 13:00-13:45 hrs resort time) Also, the number of boats per resort and dive centre should be coordinated and restricted to as few as possible. Guides, boat crews and dive instructors MUST brief the visitors about the fact that the boat will be anchored and that they have to swim back to the boat. NO pick up will be allowed inside the bay area, except if an emergency arises.

Hanifaru Guidelines Guides, boat crews and instructors have to brief the visitors, It is NOT allowed to TOUCH, RIDE or SWIM AFTER any animal. Divers and snorkellers should keep the suggested distance of 3 to 4 meters from the animals (whale sharks, manta rays or any other marine life). (This place is so unique, that the feeding animals are always coming back toward the end of the bay.) Resorts sending snorkellers must ensure that there is always an in-water supervisor. The ratio SHOULD be at least 1 guide for a maximum of 8 guests. Where possible each boat should not have more than 16 guests. Snorkellers must be proficient swimmers. Should a diver or snorkelling enthusiast not follow these guidelines and rules, the guide / instructor or boat crew MUST intervene to ensure the animals are not bothered.

Hanifaru Guidelines Boat captains, dive masters and guides MUST have sufficient training on the boat guidelines and appropriate in-water behaviour. Boat captains, dive masters and guides not following the guidelines should be reprimanded by their resort management. Adhering to the above STATED RULES is a MUST. Outside boats, such as Safari boats, need to be kindly instructed about the rules and provided with information material. Every Baa Atoll resort boat visiting Hanifaru should have a spare set of information material for this purpose. Jet skis, catamarans and other such small vessels should not be allowed within Hanifaru.

Thank You!
