Program Package YOUTH Document Version January 08, 2014 [v1] Season 2014 Pages 3+2* FANSHAWE YACHT CLUB SAILING SCHOOL 519.451.8989 www.londonsailing.ca 1. Youth Program Overview * This package includes a REGISTRATION FORM (2 pages) at the end of this document. The Fanshawe Yacht Club Sailing School (FYCSS) is located on Fanshawe Lake in London, Ontario and offers certified Learn to Sail courses for youth students (ages 9-18) as a day school in a fun and exciting environment during the summer months. All instructors at the FYCSS are certified under Canada's national authority for sailing, Sail Canada. Class sizes are optimized for learning; Sail Canada recommends a maximum of 10 students per instructor. The fleet of sailboats available at the FYCSS includes CL14s, Club 420s, Lasers, Laser Radials, and Laser Picos. The school provides all necessary sailing equipment, including a personal floatation device (PFD) for each student. Learn to Sail courses are also available for adults. For more information, visit: www.londonsailing.ca 2. Course Information The CANSail 1&2 levels introduce the beginner to sailing, teaching water safety, seamanship, rigging and basic boat handling under a coach s direction to a point where the student has sufficient knowledge and skills to sail safely and competently without supervision in winds of 8-15 km/hr. These levels replace the old White Sail I, II and III levels; students that have not yet passed their White Sail III level should enroll in the CANSail 2 level. The CANSail 3&4 levels introduce the sailor to sail trim and basic boat tuning. It covers additional safety, seamanship, terminology, sail theory, sail shape and advanced boat handling skills. The course then covers spinnaker and trapeze use, sail theory and boat maintenance, together with advanced boat handling skills in winds of 15-25 km/hr. These levels replace the old Bronze Sail IV and V levels. The CANSail 5&6 levels are the most advanced levels available and are offered at the FYCSS through the Race Team program. These levels replace the old Silver and Gold levels. For information on the Race Team, visit www.londonsailing.ca or contact the FYCSS. All courses require a minimum of four students to run. Courses have a maximum enrollment of 18 students for the CANSail levels 1 & 2 and 6 students for the CANSail levels 3 & 4. 3. FANSHAWE YACHT CLUB SAILING SCHOOL PROGRAM PACKAGE: YOUTH 2014 4. Course Fee Discounts Multi registrations receive a $20.00 discount after the first course (either the second registration for one student in the same season or second registration in one family). Fanshawe Yacht Club family members receive a $20.00 discount. 5. Course Progression & Skills Week While each course provides students with instruction for two CANSail levels (ie: 1&2, 3&4), the number of levels achieved (ie: none, one or both) depends on the student. Enrollment in a course does not guarantee certification at any level. Some students are able to progress faster depending on their knowledge, skill and past experience. For students requiring extra time, practice or instruction to finish a level, the FYCSS offers the Y7 course, also known as Skills Week. This week at the end of August allows students to hone their sailing skills following a regular course with the help from instructors (usually at lower student ratios). 6. Sailing School Regatta, Parent Evening & Banquet Each year, the FYCSS holds two events for all students from any course during the season. The first event is the evening Sailing School Regatta, which gives students the opportunity to experience racing in an official regatta format. Parents are encouraged to come out and cheer on the racers. The second event is the Sailing School Parent Evening and Banquet. Students will have the opportunity to take their parents for a sail and show off their new sailing skills, followed by a dinner and social evening in the Clubhouse. Both of these events will be held during the week of August 25th - 29th. Exact dates and information will be distributed to students during the summer and also made available on the FYCSS web site: www.londonsailing.ca 7. Clothing, Personal Items & Daily Lunch Please ensure your child is dressed appropriately for the weather. At all times on shore and on the water, shorts or swim trunks must be worn. At all times on shore, a shirt going past waist length must be worn. Students should also consider bringing the following to each class: Appropriate clothes for the forecasted weather (jacket, rainwear). Complete change of dry clothes (just in case). Swimsuit, towel, hat, waterproof sunscreen, sunglasses (and retaining strap). Proper footwear. Shoes protect toes and are better than sandals. Flip-flops are not permitted to be worn while on a boat or dock. Notebook and pen (for taking notes during on shore instruction). A hearty daily lunch (including an ice pack if necessary, drinks and afternoon snack) should be packed with each student every day. Please keep in mind that there is no snack bar or store on site or nearby. Please label everything that belongs to your child. Do not allow valuables to be brought to class (ie: phones, cameras, watches, jewellery). These items can be too easily dropped overboard or damaged by the water. Also, the FYCSS cannot be held responsible for valuables left unattended in the buildings or on the dock during a class. 8. Safety & Weather Considerations Safety is the top priority of the FYCSS. Each student is required to wear an approved PFD at all times while in a boat or on a dock. Our programs continue rain or shine. While the FYCSS building provides rain shelter, foul weather gives students the opportunity to learn a number of necessary points outside. Proper dress for such days is essential (warm clothes, foul weather gear, rubber boats). PAGE 2 OF 3

FANSHAWE YACHT CLUB SAILING SCHOOL PROGRAM PACKAGE: YOUTH 2014 9. Security The FYCSS is concerned for the safety and security of your child and will strictly adhere to your transportation arrangements as noted on the registration form, unless otherwise notified via a written note from a parent or guardian at least one day in advance. For the safety of your child, anyone arriving to pick up your child without the appropriate prior notice will NOT be permitted to collect your child. 10. Transportation Parents / guardians that will be driving their child to the School should plan to drop off between 8:45 and 9:00 AM and pickup around 4:00 PM. Presentation of your course receipt at the Park gate will grant you free entrance into the Fanshawe Conservation Area. Detailed directions are available on the School web site: www.londonsailing.ca A chartered bus transportation service is offered by the FYCSS for an extra fee of $50.00 per two week course. The bus stops, pick-up times and drop-off times have been arranged with the bus line and are outlined in the table below: Morning Time Bus Location Afternoon Time Bus Location 7:45 AM Bus Depot 4:00 PM Fanshawe Yacht Club 8:00 AM STOP #1: Glen Cairn School 4:15 PM STOP #5: Northridge School 8:10 AM STOP #2: Brick Street School 4:20 PM STOP #4: Masonville School 8:20 AM STOP #3: Banting Secondary School 4:30 PM STOP #3: Banting Secondary School 8:30 AM STOP #4: Masonville School 4:40 PM STOP #2: Brick Street School 8:35 AM STOP #5: Northridge School 4:50 PM STOP #1: Glen Cairn School 9:00 AM Fanshawe Yacht Club 5:00 PM Bus Depot Since the bus stops are not supervised, drop-off and pick-up times should be planned in accordance with the scheduled stop times. Every effort will be made to keep to the schedule, however, there are many factors which can affect the departure and arrival times. Your co-operation will be appreciated. The bus driver will be given a roster with the name of each child expected on the bus and their stop number. Children registered after rosters are compiled will have their names added by the bus driver when boarding the bus on the first day and it will be certified by the school staff on arrival. Children 12 and older will be permitted to walk home without an adult ONLY with your written permission. Children younger than 12 will be kept at the bus stop until a parent / guardian arrives. Another person, including an older sibling over 14 years, can be designated on the registration form or via a written note submitted to the School. 11. Student Absences If advance notice of an absence from class is possible, parents should send a note with their child or inform the FYCSS by the morning of the class that will be missed. A phone call or note only takes a moment and is greatly appreciated by the Instructors and saves the School considerable time when trying to locate each child. 12. Registration To register for a course, print and complete the registration form that follows on the next pages of this document. Return the completed registration form along with an acceptable method of payment to the Sailing School.
