A GRANDPA FOR CHRISTMAS SYNOPSIS Veteran showman, Bert O Riley, age 80, grabs his worn out cardigan sweater and chess board and gets into the well-kept Dodge Dart belonging to his friend and former agent, Karl Sugarman. Bert s been planning on moving into a retirement village, much to Karl s dismay. Meanwhile, his estranged daughter, Marie, is dropping off her nine-year-old daughter, Becca, to stay at Becca s friend, Heather Rogers. It s yet another business trip in yet another new job she ll be back in three days, in time for Thanksgiving, though that s not soon enough for Becca, who s seen one too many days without her mother. At Rankin s Restaurant, Bert and Karl sit with some of their fellow showbiz retiree pals Adam (a former choreographer), Roxie (a singer and actress) and Russ (an aging leading man), moving chess pieces between bites of breakfast. Bert, ever the loner, politely passes on an invitation from Adam to join his family for Thanksgiving. The discussion turns to holiday decorations, something else from which Bert has learned to abstain. On Thanksgiving, as Bert heats up a frozen turkey dinner in the microwave, a glum Becca passes on a handsome turkey being carved in her friend s dining room still no mom, as promised. Meanwhile, Bert receives a knock at the door, only to greet a policeman who gives him the news Marie s been in an accident and is unconscious in intensive care at a local hospital. A social worker fills in some of the blanks: Marie has been living in L.A., and Bert s ex-wife passed away several years before. He s been out of touch so long; he doesn t even know he s got a nine-year-old granddaughter, of whom he now must take temporary custody while Marie recovers. Bert s not exactly thrilled at the idea, but Becca needs him though nobody seems to have let her in on that little secret. She arrives the next day at his house, and seems to know everything about Bert, thanks to the stories not all of them kind told to her by her mother and grandmother. Becca s not happy: she s changed schools five times in three years, been taken away from her best friend, and, now, must live with a grandfather she s been told all her life is just plain no good. Bert tries to be warm towards Becca, offering her something to eat what little he s got in his messy kitchen besides frozen dinners - only to be met by a nine year old block of ice.

HALLMARK CHANNEL / A GRANDPA FOR CHRISTMAS Synopsis Page 2 The next morning, Becca is watching an old video of one of Bert s films and looking over his scrapbook. He explains how his former dreams of being a song-anddance man were dashed once producers figured out his face was better suited for heavies and bad guys. The two visit Becca s mother in the hospital while the doctor explains that she s being kept unconscious until the swelling in her brain from the accident diminishes. Becca tells the doctor not to tell her mother that Bert has come, too, which, of course, hurts Burt s feelings. At Heather s, Bert comes to pick up the rest of Becca s things. Bert smarts at the friendly but personal questions Heather s parents pose, rudely suggesting they mind their own business. That night, a thunderstorm crashes, and Bert pops his head in to check on Becca, who is cowering in fear in the corner. In a tender moment between the two, Bert shares with her about his own fear of thunder when he was a boy, and sings her an old Welsh lullaby, easing her fear as she drifts off to sleep. The next day, the still-cold Becca has defrosted just a bit she s made Bert breakfast. Roxie arrives to watch Becca, as Bert heads out to register her for yet another new school. The principal there explains that the school has a buddy program, summoning a young girl, Ashley, to meet Bert. At home, Roxie and Becca look over Bert s scrapbook. Becca tells Roxie about missing her mom and having to change schools Becca s made a new friend. Roxie, it seems, did a lot of moving around herself when she was Becca s age, and she lights up her young pal s face with a Christmas song, before prompting one out of Becca. Bert arrives home in time to hear a little bit, and, like he did with Heather s parents, blows the moment with a smart aleck comment. Roxie suggests he try and understand being nine and having been through what Becca has. Bert explains he s lived alone just fine for 25 years. Bert apologizes to his granddaughter and invites her to come to the park to meet Karl and watch them play chess. Once there, she challenges her grandfather to a game if she wins, she gets to bury his ratty old sweater! As it turns out, the sweater doesn t have a chance. It is Becca s first day at her new school and Bert is helping her get ready. There is not much in the house for breakfast and nothing to fix for lunch. Bert tries giving Becca a frozen dinner; surprised schools don t have microwaves for such things! He tries brushing the young girl s hair he s not all that good at making braids either.

HALLMARK CHANNEL / A GRANDPA FOR CHRISTMAS Synopsis Page 3 Becca asks him about putting up Christmas decorations for the upcoming holiday, which Bert flatly rejects. She also finally asks about some family history hers and her mother s. Bert explains that he and Becca s grandmother had split up when Marie was just two two-and-a-half, Becca corrects she s heard the story many times. She was also told that Bert simply left because he didn t want Marie, to which he objects, but explains no further. Bert drops Becca off for her first day at her new school, handing her a couple of bucks for lunch and introducing her to Ashley. By the end of the day, the two girls have become friends. Ashley suggests Becca try out for the school Christmas Pageant, and Becca thanks her also for re-doing her grandfather s poorly done braids. At home, Bert fires up the washing machine, dumping in all of Becca s clothes color and white before answering a call from Dr. Burney at the hospital: Marie is awake. The two go to visit her - Bert opting not to come in the room and it is a heartfelt reunion. Marie, having learned where her daughter is staying, warns her daughter to be careful about getting too close to her grandfather. Before bed, Bert breaks the news to Becca about her clothes: they are all now the same color. Once again, Bert must turn to Roxie to bail him out and take Becca clothes shopping, which she does the next day. Becca asks her new friend about the Christmas Pageant, and Roxie encourages her to try out for it, offering to help her prepare a song. The next morning, Becca not only has new clothes, but there s actually some food in the house for breakfast and lunch, though Bert still seems to be striking out on Becca s preferences. Nonetheless, he manages a compliment for his granddaughter about her new wardrobe, bringing a smile to her face. Bert is actually beginning to like his new role. As Becca watches another Bert/Karl chess game at the park, she tells Bert of her plans for the Pageant, asking Bert s help. Bert, it turns out, used to direct musicals, and happily agrees to help teach Becca some dance moves. At home, Roxie teaches Becca a new tune, while Bert introduces her to a little soft shoe routine. At the audition the next day, Becca is a hit. Bert then rounds up the rest of his retiree gang for her, with Adam helping out with more dancing, Russ with acting tips, Karl s wife with costumes. Bert later gets a phone call and informs his granddaughter of the news: she s in! Becca catches Karl alone and asks him why her grandfather won t put up Christmas decorations. It turns out it was Christmas Eve that Bert and his wife had separated.

HALLMARK CHANNEL / A GRANDPA FOR CHRISTMAS Synopsis Page 4 Marie, meanwhile, has been moved out of intensive care, so Bert and Becca go to visit her, Bert, again, reluctantly hanging outside until Marie prompts him to come in. Becca tells her mom the exciting news, Bert leaving the two of them alone to catch up. Marie senses her daughter s becoming attached to her grandfather, something she again warms her about. Meanwhile, the doctor explains to Bert that Marie s had some brain damage, and will need some help recovering when she leaves the hospital. Bert finally breaks down his wall about Christmas trees, and he and Becca go out shopping for one, to Becca s delight. On top of that, they decide to have a tree trimming party, inviting the whole gang over, including Ashley and Heather, Becca s friends. And, believe it or not, Bert s actually cooking a meal for them! Bert and Becca visit Marie in the hospital, and this time, Bert even has a little tree for his own daughter. Marie tells Becca that, after she gets out, her friend in San Francisco will let them stay with her until Marie gets back on her feet, though, at this point, Becca would prefer to stay with her grandfather rather than move to another city again, especially away from Bert. Marie had told her daughter that Bert had never been around when she needed him well, Becca has now experienced otherwise. When Becca invites Heather to come to the tree decorating party, Heather explains that she can t because of the way Bert had behaved towards her mother. As guests arrive at the party, Bert steps out to clean up the mess he made with Heather s mom and returns with Heather, to join in a splendid evening. The next day, Bert visits Marie alone, hoping to patch things up between them, inviting her and Becca to live with him when she gets out of the hospital. Marie needs to think there s a lot of baggage still between them. Regardless, back home, Bert encourages Becca to consider her mom s suggestion about San Francisco we all have to do things sometimes we don t want to do. Later, Bert receives a phone call from the school principal: the teacher in charge of the Pageant had to leave town on family matters would he consider taking over the show? The gang, of course, was all in on this suggestion... and, of course, he ll do it. But then trouble strikes: Bert collapses at the park, due to some blocked arteries, and will require angioplasty. While waiting at the hospital, Karl sits with Marie and finally fills her in on Bert s so-called never being there. When Marie was two, Bert and her mother were working the dinner theater circuit, when a new director fired Bert for being too old. Her mom and the director took off together on Christmas Eve. Over the years, her mother told Marie that Bert never helped financially, but was lying: Bert paid for everything. Marie and Becca go home to Bert s house, but Marie returns the next day to talk to Bert she knows now what happened.

HALLMARK CHANNEL / A GRANDPA FOR CHRISTMAS Synopsis Page 5 Meanwhile, the show rehearsals go on, with Bert s buddies in charge, until show day. Karl goes to the hospital to explain the details Bert can t keep out of the show! Karl promises to bring him a video, but that s not good enough. Bert checks himself out of the hospital, against his doctor s advice, who eventually gives in and gives him a ride. The show begins, Becca at first saddened by Bert s absence until she spots him backstage. He encourages her by telling her how her grandmother would overcome stage fright. The two hug, before Becca takes the stage, stealing the show. Back home, with the Christmas tree lit and the gang all there, Marie suggests to Bert that she and Becca would do just fine living at his house. There s a lot of catching up to do. --HALLMARK CHANNEL--
