Dear parents, Here's a chance for your kids to participate in a marathon - one mile at a time. Kids run or walk 26.2 miles over a period of time, logging their progress. Then when the kids complete the final distance to make it a full marathon, they are presented a special marathon finisher s medal. Kids also receive a Miracle Match KIDS t-shirt. A special one-mile race will be held in August for all of the Miracle Match KIDS to complete their final mile and receive their finisher s medal. In the event they cannot attend on that race day, the medals will be mailed to them. We want to make them feel very special about being a Miracle Match KID!. Running Tips for Miracle Match KIDS What is the proper running form? 1. Run Tall - Don't lean too far back or forward. 2. Run Relaxed - Head, face, mouth, neck, arms, shoulders, arms should feel relaxed. 3. Smile when you run - it makes you relaxed. 4. Chin up and eyes forward 5. Arms should swing straight ahead - not from side to side. 6. Relaxed hands with thumb usually up - no clenching fists. 7. Don't go out too fast - start slowly. 8. Keep the same effort going up or down hill as you do when running flat. Take shorter steps going up and down hill. 9. Stride length should not be too long. Don't over stride by making your steps too long. How do I stay safe? 1. Run with a friend or running partner. 2. Don't run with headsets - be aware of what is around you. 3. Carry change for a phone call. 4. Tell friends or your parents where you will be running and when you should be back. 5. Run in areas you are familiar with. 6. Always stay alert. 7. Carry identification with your name, phone number. 8. Run against traffic so you can see the approaching cars. 9. Wear reflective material if you run before dawn or after dark. 10. Make sure you drink water or a sports drink before running and after running- stay hydrated. 2. If you are running for more than 20 minutes you should drink water or a sports drink during your run. It's ok to stop and drink. 3. Wear light clothes both in weight and color. Wear shorts and a singlet if you can (or shorts and a T-Shirt). Wear white as it does not absorb the heat as much. 4. Wear a hat or cap to protect your skin from the sun and keep you cooler. 5. Wear sunscreen but NOT on your forehead because it might get into your eyes. 6. Run slower on very hot days. 7. To participate in a running event sponsored by a group, however, the parent will have to register for the event to run with their child.
