CLUBS AND ACTIVITIES

"THe Deep Run Debate Club will have thier first meeting on Wednesday after school in room 228. Join us for a lively debate on the race for the presidency between the Democrat Barrack Obama and his Republican challenger Mitt Romney. We will be debating the policies of each candidate, so please join us for a highly spirited debate. Students aren't required to do any prior research before attending.the meeting will be from 4PM to 5:30, and students will also be able to apply for leadership positions in the debate team as well."

The Interact Club will have their next meeting tomorrow, after school in Mr. Texler's room 107. New and returning members are encouraged to attend. We will be making the banner for the Homecoming Parade and talking about upcoming projects so you can earn service hours for your diploma. Anyone at Deep Run is welcome to join Interact, just come to the meeting or talk to Mr. Texler in room 107 if you have questions.

Attention Theatre students: anyone interested in participating in the Thespian Zombie Run please come to an informational meeting on Tuesday, 10/23, during extended study in the drama room. Get a pass from Mrs. Gibson.

Thespians: we will have our regular meeting Thursday, 10/25 in the drama room at 8:15. Please make every effort to attend!

There will be a mandatory parade meeting for all clubs, organizations, and Homecoming Court members next Wednesday, Oct. 24th, at 8:30am in room 113. The SCA will go over important information regarding the parade. Every club should send one member to the meeting. See Mrs. Berry for more information.

Get excited for Spririt Week, starting this Monday. Here's the schedule: 'Merica Monday, Hawaiian Tuesday, Denim Wednesday, Western Thursday, and DRHS Friday. SCA will award five students with prizes for best costume during the pep rally next Friday!

The first Math League Contest will be held on Tuesday, October 23rd during Extended Study in the auditorium. All are invited to participate. Bring your own pencil and calculator. Ask your math teacher for a pass.

Attention Spanish club members. It's t-shirt time! Get your spanish club t-shirts while you can. These long sleeved beauties are only $12.00 and they won't last long. All checks must be made out to Deep Run High School and all cash must be exact change. See Mrs. Lambert in room 226 for details.

This announcement is for anyone in the Best Buddies club. The first party for the Best Buddies Club will be on October 31st and will be for all grade levels. After the October party we will be back to the original schedule. If you have any questions please see Karlin Stuckey or Mr. Kern.

Attention Art Club Members! If you signed up to help with the float, don't forget to come! Our work days are: the 17th after school, the 18th during extended study, the 23rd, 24th and 25th during extended study and after school. Check the calender if you forgot what days you signed up for. see you there!

Seniors- Don't forget to check the Scholarship section of the Deep Run web page for scholarship opportunities. The Scholarship section is located in the School Counseling section. 9 new scholarship links have been added last week!

Seniors Do you need money for college? Are you confused by the financial aid process? Mrs. Kaplan will be running a Financial Aid/Scholarship group for seniors. The group will be held during 3 Extended Studies in October and November with a follow up in January. Interested seniors should pick up a permission form in School Counseling. Forms are due to Mrs. Kaplan by October 23rd.

The ACADEMIC AWARDS ASSEMBLY will be celebrated this year on Friday, November 9th, at 10am in the Gym. Any sophomore, junior or senior who earned straight Aís, perfect attendance or a perfect SOL score from last year will be honored. Parents of award recipients are welcome to attend. On Thursday, Oct. 4th, a list of award recipients was posted outside of the School Counseling Office. You have until Friday, October 26th to let the counseling office know if your name is missing. Congratulations to all award recipients and more details later about practice.

Don't be left without your PINK on. PINK OUT shirts will be sold at the football game Friday night. Other dates & times when you can purchase your shirt are: ~ During lunches on Thurs., Oct. 18th ~ At the JV Football and the volleyball games on Thurs., Oct. 18th

WILDCATS, STRAP IN! The cheerleading squad will be selling Deep Run rollercoaster longsleeved tshirts. The cost is $20 dollars and we will be selling from 8:30 until 8:50 every morning this week AND next week.you can also buy them during extended study in Ms. Slota's room, 220.

Do you remember Let Go Your Legos? From September 17th through November 2nd, Blue Cheese is holding our annual drive for all students to donate their Legos or Duplos. There is a donation box by the Main Office and in Room 208. Members of NHS, SNHS, and Key Club can earn points by dropping off your Legos in your sponsorís room.

SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES & VISITING COLLEGES

A representative from HOLLINS UNIVERSITY will be visiting during lunch on Tuesday, October 23rd.

A representative the UNIVERSITY OF WEST VIRGINIA will be visiting during lunch on Monday, October 29th.

A representative from the UNIVERSITY OF CONNECTICUT will be visiting during lunch on Monday, Oct. 29th.

Attention Seniors: Are you a history buff? Do you enjoy politic? Is government or military service in your future? If so, visit gwcf.org for scholarship opportunities from Washington Crossing Foundation. Applications are due January 15th.

A representative from the UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND will be visiting on Thursday, October 25th during lunch.

A representative from UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA will be visiting on Tuesday, October 23rd.

A representative from RADFORD UNIVERSITY will be visiting during extended study on Thursday, October 18th in the auditorium. If you would like to visit with RADFORD during extended study come by school counseling to pick up a pass.

The COLLEGE ADMISSIONS PANEL will be held at Deep Run on Tuesday, October 16th at 7pm in the Auditorium. Representatives from VT, UVA, JMU and U of R will hold a panel discussion about the college admissions process and take questions. ALL GRADE LEVELS are welcome as this information will be helpful for all.

The Comcast Leaders and Achievers Program is offering a $1,000 scholarship to students who have a strong commitment to community service, academics and demonstrated leadership. Applications are available on the Scholarship Section of the the School Counseling link on the Deep Run web page. Applications are due to Mrs. Kaplan by November 8th

RADFORD UNIVERSITY will be hosting an ON- SITE APPLICATION REVIEW on Friday, November 30th at 11:30am in the Career Center located in school counseling. In order to be considered you must: 1. Sign up in the counseling office. 2.Submit an application for admission (along with the application fee) to Radford by Nov. 1st. 3. Have your SAT/ACT score sent through collegeboard.com/actstudent.org to Radford. 4.Request your transcript early enough for Radford to receive it by November 1st. To sign up and for more information come by the school counseling office.

Seniors- There will no longer be a Scholarship Drawer in School Counseling. All Scholarship Applications received by School Counseling, will be scanned and available on the Deep Run Web Page under a Scholarship Section on the School Counseling link. Please follow the directions on the cover sheet of each application for completing and sending the application.

Unleash your artistic talent and enter the 2012 PTA Reflections Contest. The theme is The Magic of a Moment. Create original art in the following categories: Photography, Dance Choreography, Music Composition, Literature, Visual Arts or Film Production. No entry form! Just turn in your creation labeled with your name, grade, email and phone number to the main office by Wednesday, October 17.

SPORTS

There will be an informational meeting Wednesday, October 23rd in the morning at 8:30 for anyone interested in trying out for the gymnastics team. The meeting will be held in the Main Gym. Please see Coach Wright if you cannot attend.

Tickets for the Hermitage versus Deep Run Football game will go on pre-sale in the concessions stand in Commons 2 next to the gym. They will be sold before school and during all lunches on Friday 10/19/2012.

Attention Any 9th, 10th or 11th grade boys interested in playing Basketball: there will be a mandatory meeting in the Auditorium on Wednesday October 17th during extended study. See Mr. Dickey for a pass.

GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENTS

Who loves Sweet Frogs? Next Tuesday, October 23rd, DRMD will host it's first Sweet Frog fundraiser! From 4pm till close, come by wearing a Deep Run t-shirt and 20% of your bill will go directly to the dance! Come enjoy a sweet treat with all of your friends and help us top our $250,000 total from last year. See you next Tuesday!

This Saturday, October 20th, DRMD will be hosting a Blood Drive at Midas of Richmond Short Pump from 10am till 4pm. For every donation received, $10 will be donated to this years dance! Students, tell your parents to stop by and donate! Teachers, Administrators, and Faculty come out and help the 2013 DRMD and save 3 lives. We will have freshly baked goods for those who donate!

Attention all students! Tomorrow, October 17th, is round 2 of the Buffalo Wild Wings Fundraisers for this year's Marathon Dance. The last B-Dub's night did very well and we look forward to an even larger crowd this week. Seniors come and celebrate with a delicious dinner after convocation! B-Dubs *** B-Dubs **** B-Dubs... WINGS ROCK!

Attention 10th and 11th Graders: Vote NOW for Deep Run Honor Council! No, really, do it NOW! Open your computer, go to School Space, your class (2014 or 2015) and VOTE! Voting will be closed on Friday afternoon.

The SCA will sell Homecoming Tickets for $15 this week. Tickets will be on sale in the Commons before school (8:15-8:45am) and during all lunches. Tickets will not be sold at the door of the dance, so please purchase your tickets in advance! We will sell tickets starting this Friday, 10/19 until next Friday, 10/26. If you would like to bring a guest from another school, but must complete the guest registration form before purchasing your tickets. As a reminder, the dance is next Saturday, Oct. 27th from 8-11pm in the Commons/Gym. Even though Homecoming's theme is Wild West, the attire for Homecoming is semi-formal. See Mrs. Berry or Mrs Perego for more information!

Reminder to all Homecoming Court members: please complete the informational google doc for the SCA by this Friday, Oct. 19th. If you have any questions about Homecoming, please See Mrs. Berry or Mrs. Perego.

The Deep Run Homecoming Parade is set for next Friday, October 26th! The parade starts at 5:30pm from the Shady Grove YMCA and ends at the DRHS football stadium. If you are not in the parade, remember to come out and support your school!

The Technical Centers will be making presentations to the 10th grade Health & PE classes all day on Monday Oct. 22 in the DRHS Auditorium. Any student who has already taken Health & PE 10 and would like to attend one of these presentations should come to the School Counseling Office for a pass.

The countdown has begun for Friday's PINK OUT!! Make sure you wear your PINK OUT shirt to school on Friday and again to the game Friday night against the Hermitage Panthers. PINK OUT shirts are still available either during lunch or stop by Ms. W.'s room in 117 to buy your shirt. Don't be the only one left without your PINK in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Please sign up for the Blood Drive on Tuesday, October 16 th by going by Mrs. Moore's room (232) with a signed Blood Donor form. These can be picked.up in front of room 232 or room 221 (Mrs. Latcovich). Sign up is before school from 8:00 until 8:55 and during extended study. You must be 16 or older. Beta points will be earned for donations.

Attention Juniors: The VA. Aerospace Science & Technology Scholars is a NASA based program for students who are interested in science, technology, engineering and math. VASTS is an interactive online learning course that culminates in a 1 week residential summer academy at NASA Langley Research Center for those who qualify. Please come by school counseling if you would like more information about this program. Application deadline is Nov. 2nd.

Attention students: The last day to add a new class to your schedule is Friday, September 21, 2012. You cannot drop an AP class until October 15, 2012. Any class dropped after the first nine weeks will appear on your transcript as a WP or WF.
