Sectin Time: 1.5 hurs Sectin Objectives: After listening t a lecture cvering the imprtance f preventing damage t the aircraft skin and the methds used t avid it, students will demnstrate ability t prevent damage t aircraft skin by perfrming hands-n prjects t standards and specificatins. Intrductin Handuts: Assembler Installer Manual (range bk) pg. 30 Explain what is meant by "skin quality" The surface f the aircraft fuselage skin must be handled and wrked n with extra care t keep it defect free and maintain its luster. Why is it imprtant? If a skin is scratched thrugh the clad, the skin will crrde. This weakens the structure, pssibly causing failure. Sme airlines chse t nt paint prtins f the fuselage. Rewrk f damaged areas is ften bvius and distracts frm the verall appearance. Airplane skins Mst cmmercial aircraft skins are made frm aluminum ally material and cated with a very thin layer f pure aluminum, which is clad. Clad is very resistant t crrsin. a. This Clad is generally abut 5% f the verall thickness f the skin r apprximately.002 t.005 inch thick. b. Clad is extremely sft and can be easily damaged. Surface damage such as scratches, abrasins r imprper riveting is the mst frequent cause fr rejectin f riveted skin. Instructr Nte: Using a piece f clad material, apply skin tape and have a few students write their first name using an ink pen. Remve tape t shw the ball pint des leave marks in the clad and hw sft the clad is. Skin Prtectin Prtect the skin at all times with cardbard, heavy paper, rubber mats, r elephant hide (a thick tape that cmes in varius widths). These are usually fund in yur immediate wrk area r tl rms.
Cuntersinking Flush Riveting: Aircraft Skin Prtectin (cntinued) Skin Prtectin (cntinued) The skin shuld cme with a temprary prtective spray cating referred t as Spray Lat. If a temprary cating has nt been applied, r has been remved during fabricatin, it must be reapplied as sn as pssible t prevent minr abrasin damage and xidatin. Fr re-applicatin, refer t the manufacturing standards r prcess specificatins. Precautins Never use the skin as a clip bard t write n. The clad is s sft a ball pint pen will leave marks n it! Always wear the bt sx prvided in the area when yu must walk n skins. Even with bt sx, walk nly n the mats. Dn't drag air hses behind yu; carry them t where they will be used. Wrap expsed fittings with rags r tape t prevent scarring the skin (r expsed structure).

Cunter Sinking Flush Riveting Prject Installatin Plan fr Prject This prject requires demnstratin f integrated skills frm ther prjects. It is a repeat f all the skills taught and demnstrated t this pint in the class. Demnstrate especially difficult peratins as necessary. Nte: Instructrs shuld watch fr cmmn mistakes. During questin and answer perids, discuss these mistakes as a grup. Practice Review: Students will use tw plates f material t layut and drill numerus hles, cuntersink, deburr, and rivet per drawing and Installatin Plan.
