PAGE 4 LINCOLN LOG CARNIVAL EDITION FEBRUARY 6, 2016 Hello from Lincoln's Student Council. We have been very busy as we head into mid-winter with many projects to over-see. One such project is preparing for the carnival's silent auction...this year the items we will auction are nesting boxes. Nesting boxes are a favored space to build nests for our local favorites; nuthatches and robins. The first step in this annual event is to come up with an idea for the items to be made. Since we look toward spring in February, we often think of birds and of course we want to support the lives of birds in our area...hence the nesting box idea. The second thing that takes place sometime over Winter break is Mr. Conmy begins to build the items out of wood in our small and cluttered basement. Once that is underway, I make a drawing of the item and have 650 copies made so that the Council members can introduce the school-wide design contest. Student Council members were responsible for disseminating the rules of the design contest to the younger grades as well as to their own classes on Tuesday, the 12th of January. We received designs daily and our Student Council members voted on 3 winners per grade level on Tuesday, the 19th. From there, we announced the winning design artists and set up times for the winning designers to paint their designs on the wood boxes. Finally, these will be auctioned at the carnival. The wood and paint are the Conmy family donation to the end result. Now where does the money go once the carnival is over? The 'lion's share' of the proceeds will be sent to Ghana, Africa to assist with a project that Rebecca Kuntz ( Mr. Kuntz's Daughter) is heading up. Our last three years of proceeds have gone to Ghana to help Rebecca build a media center and to assist with the school for children with disabilities, but this year it is going to help purchase the supplies that families have to bring to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi, Ghana when a child is in need of surgery or is ill. We take for granted that when we go to hospital, the supplies and all we need to get well is right there, but it is not so in all parts of the world. Rebecca found that families from Kumasi, Ghana, have to put together boxes that include bandaging, anti-biotic wash, bedding, and various other supplies including food, before they can even think to bring their child in for assistance. These boxes cost $10.00 to put together but $10.00 is a lot of money for many there. Rebecca's hope is to fund 200 boxes for the families. Wouldn't that be great if we are a large piece of that assistance? A smaller part of our proceeds will go toward a local non-forprofit that Student Council will decide upon later in the weeks following the carnival. Our Student Council members will help decide what the starting bid will be on the boxes, but generally they begin at $12.00 and the bids can go up in dollar increments or more. We ask that parents of the painters not count on being the one that will take home the painted boxes but if you plan to, be ready to bid. We would like to ask that as many people come to see the works of art and bid on them if you are able. We put a lot of time and energy into this wonderful fund raiser which allows our students to know the wonders of reaching out and giving a helping hand. See you at the carnival. Diane Conmy and Karri Spillane Check out the while at Carnival! This year, each classroom will create a circus animal to adorn the school hallways during Carnival. Be sure to find your child's class creation for Carnival!
