A unique setting overlooking the SUSSEX DOWNS Welcome to East Sussex National Back in the mid 1980 s Brian Turner, a Canadian entrepreneur, had the idea of creating a superior golf complex on what was then the Little Horsted Estate in East Sussex. So successful was his vision that East Sussex National was soon recognised as one of the premier golf venues in Europe. Robert E Cupp, an American course architect who was regularly hired by Jack Nicklaus, designed the 2 courses together with the 3 hole academy course with USGA specification which provides excellent drainage and putting surfaces that would match any of the major championship courses. To compliment the outstanding quality of the courses it was necessary to build a luxurious clubhouse with facilities that gave the complex the touch of class it deserved. A 104 bedroom, 4 star hotel was added in 2006 which offers superb conferencing and banqueting facilities, and includes a fully equipped gym with health club and spa. Since opening, the club has attracted a host of championships, which include the European Open in 1993 and 1994, 5 European Challenge Tour Events, 4 PGA European Tour Qualifying Schools between 1994 and 1997 plus numerous other golf tournaments, including Open Qualifying and the Sky televised, 2016 PGA European event. Some of the world s greatest golfers have taken up the challenge set by Robert E Cupp including the likes of ViJay Singh, Ernie Els, Sir Nick Faldo and Colin Montgomery together with the 2005 Ryder Cup Captain, Ian Woosnam. Both courses have remained largely unchanged and all 36 holes are unique in their design, no two holes look or play the same, a great visual and golfing challenge. Playing East Sussex National is a truly memorable experience.
AN EXPERIENCE THAT YOU WILL TREASURE. The East Course Both courses have several signature holes which makes East Sussex National a true test of golf. The East Course is the stadium course with tournament golf being a key feature within the design. It has a natural amphitheatre around the 18th green for the crowds to acknowledge their champions. 1st Hole A relatively simple tee shot, however position for the 2nd shot is very important, which is played over water to an angled green, so a par is never a bad start. This hole was driven in the European Open by Vijay Singh! 9 th Fairway 10th Hole A risk and reward par 5, a good drive down the left side of the fairway will catch the slope bringing the green into range in two for the longer hitters, but any ball missing the green in two will result in a tricky pitch or a watery grave. 15th Hole This marks the start of one of the toughest series of finishing holes in golf with 3 holes over 450 yards. A long par 4 with a substantial carry from the tee followed by the 2nd shot into a plateau green where club selection is paramount. 16th Hole A great par 3, similar in design to the 12th at Augusta National, over water with bunkers, playing 178 yards. 17th Hole Here you have to be careful not to run out of fairway by driving into the lake. 18th Hole One of the most demanding finishing holes in golf. Measuring 454 yards off the championship tees this uphill par 4 is waiting to catch out even the finest golfers. 18 th hole 17 th Green
The WEST Course Traditionally known as the Members Course, the West Course is a complete contrast to the East Course, with arguably some of the best golf holes and undulating greens in Sussex. 1st Hole 3rd Hole Similar to the East, a generous opening tee shot, but avoid the large tree at the end of the fairway. A downhill second shot awaits a good drive to a generous green that slopes from back to front. A beautiful par 3 with water down the right side and behind the hole. If you safely navigate the water, a severely undulating green awaits. 9th Hole This starts a stretch of holes, commonly referred to by the members as Amen Corner. Many a card is wrecked between holes 9 and 14. A tee shot is threaded between majestic oaks and a second shot played from an undulating fairway to a severe two-tiered green. 10th Hole One of the most picturesque holes at East Sussex National with a backdrop of Horsted Place, stately home with its historic royal connections. The tee shot must avoid the large oak guarding the rightside of the fairway, the shot to the green plays slightly shorter than the yardage to the two-tier green across the lake fronting the hole. 13th Hole A picturesque par 3 over water to a large bowl shaped green, where a two putt is not guaranteed. 18th Hole A truly remarkable finishing hole, demanding an accurate drive onto a tree-lined fairway followed by a shot into a heavily guarded green with the backdrop of the magnificent clubhouse beyond. THE CLUBhOUSE A warm welcome awaits every visitor to East Sussex National. Your clubs are taken prior to parking and wait for you at the collection area by our enthusiastic and friendly service/ hospitality team. The clubhouse s excellent catering facilities and Hunnington s restaurant overlooks the 18th green on both courses and offers a glimpse of the beautiful surroundings and mouthwatering challenges ahead. In the clubhouse hallway there is a chance to look back in time. The honours boards shows the names and scores of the best players in the world who have graced the fairways of East Sussex National. The clubhouse was built slightly after the courses and not until after the European Open was held at the club. The building is oast house in design with some art deco features that offer the building a unique look. The members bar overlooks both courses with stunning views of the Sussex Downs, an incredible backdrop to the closing holes on both courses. Superb Service DAY VISITORS All visitors are welcome at East Sussex National, whether you are playing golf, visiting the golf shop or just wishing to enjoy the bar and restaurant areas. Start times can be booked via the golf shop along with hire clubs, shoes, buggies and trolleys. Every visitor enjoys a warm welcome from our hospitality/ guest arrival team, your clubs are taken on arrival to the collection area prior to your round and then returned to the drop off area for your collection.
GOLF MEMBERSHIPS East Sussex National is a very friendly and inclusive golf club, where a modern membership balances the traditions and innovations of the game in a harmonious atmosphere and where enjoyment of the game of golf is paramount. WHY PLAY ANYWHERE ElsE When you have got it all at one club? Competitions are organised by our experienced golf operations team with an extensive diary available. The club plays friendly and representative matches against other clubs, with teams regularly competing for top honours. There are also plenty of social golf events to suit all tastes and ability. Ladies and gents major events are played on the same day using separate courses, with prize presentations made in our members bar or patio areas after play. We have a junior section for aspiring golfers or for those just wishing to share a family day on the golf course in beautiful surroundings. Membership includes unlimited golf both courses, 3 academy golf holes, driving range and short game areas and private locker rooms with bag storage. After your game you can relax amongst friends in the members bar, use the steam/sauna rooms in the health club or enjoy something from our extensive menus. GOLF ACADEMY The golf academy at East Sussex National has some of the finest practice facilities in Sussex. The academy is equipped with a digital teaching studio with a state-of-the-art digital V1 video system and offers a custom fitting service. Membership of the academy gives you a year round comprehensive tuition programme, unlimited use of all of the practice facilities and use of the bars, restaurants and changing rooms in the clubhouse. It is a great stepping stone into golf and full membership. Academy membership includes up to six individual ½ hour golf lessons with video computer analysis. Unlimited high quality range balls, use of driving range facilities use of short game practice facilities (bunkers, putting greens, pitching and chipping areas), unlimited use of the 3 hole academy course and reduced green fees on the championship courses are all included. We have a team of highly qualified and experienced PGA golf professionals, who have developed an excellent reputation for coaching people of all ages and abilities, individually or in groups.
