Chisago County 4-H Shooting Sports/Wildlife Project 2017-18 Fact Sheet REGISTRATION AND ENROLLMENT ONLY participants who are enrolled 4-H members may participate (State Rule) o Contact the 4-H Extension Office for information on enrollment Minors must have a signed parental consent form to handle firearms or air guns. Consent forms can be printed, signed, and returned to the Extension Office. Go to: http://www.extension.umn.edu/youth/mn4-h/projects/shooting-sports/shootingsports/docs/shooting-sports-policy-parental-consent-firearms.pdf Registration forms and fees can be paid direct to the 4-H Extension Office for each discipline enrolled. Scholarships or reduced fees are available for those who need financial assistance. AGE REQUIREMENTS Program participation in various disciplines may only be offered to young people who have reached the appropriate grade. The grade requirement is based on the grade of the youth at the beginning of the 4- H Program year, October 1 Wildlife all grades BB Gun and Archery 3rd grade & older Air Rifle and Air Pistol 4th grade & older 22 Rifle and.22 Pistol, Muzzleloading, Shotgun 7th grade & older STATE SHOOT PARTICIPATION REQUIREMENTS A minimum of 8 hours of wildlife education annually 15 hours of on-line marksmanship/safety in each event in which the participant competes for the first year (including basic safety, range rules/etiquette and marksmanship in scoring) For.22, air rifle, air pistol and BB gun 15 hours of training in one discipline and 8 hours in each of other related discipline. After the initial training (15 hrs), 8 additional hours of annual training in subsequent years. All on-line hour requirements must be completed by September 1, 2018. Wildlife hours must be completed by August 15th. To be considered for a team, wildlife & shooting hours must be completed by August 15. Junior Class: Grades 4-6, Intermediate Class: Grades 7-9, Senior Class: Grades 10-13 WILDLIFE REQUIREMENTS The Minnesota 4-H Shooting Sports/Wildlife Program requires 8 hours of wildlife instruction for beginning and returning members. Wildlife hours must be complete by July 18 to be eligible for the State Shoot Guidelines for earning wildlife hours can be found on the Wildlife Requirement handout. 2018 Regents of the University of Minnesota. SAFETY SS/WP meetings are supervised by certified SS/WP instructors. Safety is our #1 concern. You must have eye protection (safety goggles or safety glasses). You will not be allowed to participate if you are not wearing eye protection. We ask all participants be on their best behavior at all times and pay attention to every instruction while participating in the training. Failure to conduct yourself in a calm, quiet & safe manner may result in your being sent home The only persons allowed on shooting line are the shooters and certified instructors. Firearms must be pointed down range at all times. If a firearm is pointed at another person the shooter will be taken off the line. On the 2nd offense the individual will be out of the program. No talking to or coaching of the shooters by spectators or parents. No unnecessary talking or interference between shooters, parents or other shooters. WINTER WEATHER CANCELLATION POLICY ALL 4-H activities within Chisago County will be cancelled if Either North Branch or Chisago Lakes schools close or release early due to weather Temperatures reach -30 F and/or the wind chill is -50 F Travel is not advised If in doubt, please check the Chisago County 4-H Website or Facebook Page for cancellation information and by email when possible. EQUIPMENT We will furnish all the air rifles, air pistols, BB s and pellets for the participants and the archery equipment. A shooting mat and kneeling roll will be provided because you will be lying and kneeling on the floor or ground. When we move outdoors we will begin shooting.22 rifle, shotgun and black powder. We have.22 rifles and archery equipment. Participants will need to furnish their own hearing protection, shotguns we will provide shells,.22 rifle cartridges, and black powder supplies. CLUB YEAR 2017-18 COUNTY Parental consent to use or handle firearms and air guns I am the parent or legal guardian of, a minor child (age 17 and under) who is a 4-H member in the Minnesota 4-H Shooting Sports & Wildlife Club ( Program ) for the club year beginning October 1, 2017 and ending September 30, 2018 ( 2017-2018 Club Year ). I understand that as part of the Program, my child will have the opportunity to use a firearm or air gun with use of ammunition or explosive. I hereby consent to my child s use and handling of firearms and/or air guns with ammunition or explosive, outside of my presence, whether within or outside of a municipality, while participating in any Program event throughout the 2017-2018 Club Year. I further consent to and authorize the staff of the Program to provide my child with the necessary firearm or air gun and/or ammunition to participate in any Program event during the 2017-2018 Club Year. CHISAGO COUNTY 4-H SHOOTING SPORTS / WILDLIFE PROGRAM State Shoot Wildlife Hours Requirement Any 4-H member in Chisago County may participate in the wildlife program, but only those going to the state shooting sports invitational need to complete the 8 hours of documented time in a wildlife activity. In addition to any scheduled activities you will also need to do some type of independent activity or activities related to wildlife. On the accompanying form are some examples of possible activities you can do. They are just suggestions; you may have others that are better. Shooting practice/training does not qualify. You can use the report form to send in your wildlife hours to me for approval. You must complete these hours before July 18th. Contact the Extension Office if you have any questions, or if you have an independent project you would like to receive credit for. 2017-18 CHISAGO COUNTY 4-H SHOOTING SPORTS Wildlife Hours Report Wildlife Requirement All participating shooting sports members must complete at least 8 hours of wildlife instruction to participate at the State Shoot. Examples of opportunities that count towards wildlife instructional hours include creating a wildlife project for the county fair, presenting a wildlife demonstration at a 4-H meeting, attending a state park naturalist event. Participants must complete this form by July 18 th to receive credit and be eligible for the state shoot. Please list each activity, the amount of time involved, and a description of what you did or learned for the activity. Add additional pages if needed.
