Arden Club Calendar www.ardenclub.org 302 475-3126 2126 The Highway, Arden, DE 19810 AUG/SEPT 2018 Printed on 100% post-consumer fiber paper. CONCERT GILD The 2018-2019 Season is taking shape, here is what we have so far (with proposed dates): California Guitar Trio, with Jesse Marchant 9/7/18 The 2018-19 Concert Gild Season kicks off on September 7 with the California Guitar Trio (CGT) making their long-awaited return to Gild Hall. 16 albums in, they are one of the most unique and iconic instrumental artists going. Their diverse work includes beautiful original work as well as classical-reworkings of Bach, Vivaldi, and Schubert. They are also known for their covers, which include Pink Floyd s Echoes and their rousing version of Queen s Bohemian Rhapsody. We are also thrilled to have Jesse Marchant, who could easily headline, opening the show. 8pm. Tickets $20 for members, $25 for non-members. Kaia Kater, with Richie and Rosie opening, 11/3/18 tickets are on sale now. Kaia Kater grew up between worlds: one her Caribbean family s deep ties to Canadian folk music, and her long study of Appalachian music. Special Guest with Kaia will be Richie Stearns (a favorite banjo player of ours in Arden, he played here twice with his band Horseflies, and he played a Banjo show at The Grand with Bela Fleck and Arden stalwart Tony Trischka). He has a new duo with Rosie Newton (The Duhks, The Mammals) Richie and Rosie! Richie Stearns and Rosie Newton grew up a 150 miles and few decades apart. While both were raised by professional cellist, Richie started playing banjo at 14 and Rosie began classical piano lessons at eight, eventually moving to classical viola as a teen. Both shared incredibly unique, musically-immersed childhoods: Richie s family founded the iconic GrassRoots Festival of Music & Dance (which he is now President of) and by her junior year of high school, Rosie was playing fiddle and touring with folk rock band The Mammals. During that time, the two were introduced at Saratoga Springs Flurry festival -- a meeting that would spark a fated friendship and unique musical bond. Lisa Loeb concert for Sunday12/ 9/18 is already Sold Out.

ARDENSINGERS GILD Robin Hood and the Singing Nun A panto, by Stuart Ardern Nov. 10, 16 & 17, 2018 at 8pm Nov. 11 & 17, 2018 at 2pm at the Arden Gild Hall Stage Director: Ken Mammarella Music Director: Helene Furlong We re welcoming new Ardensingers to join the cast and crew for our Fall show, Robin Hood and the Singing Nun, a musical panto. Auditions were held on June 19-20, but some roles remain to be filled (or you can join us as one of the Merry Men, a young outlaw, a nun, or a soldier). For more information: visit our Auditions Page at www.ardensingers.org, send an E-mail to ardensingers@gmail.com, or call John Trexler at (484) 319-2350. We have five shows planned for the two weekends before Thanksgiving. Rehearsals will be Sunday afternoons from 2 4:30pm and Tuesday evenings from 7:30 10pm (9pm for young actors), starting after Labor Day. The show is (very) loosely based on the original story, with humor ranging from the slapstick to subtle adult humor, a running parody of a popular musical, and many standard panto elements, including regular interaction with the audience and even a pantomime horse! It will be a fun show. The Pirates of Penzance Auditions for our Spring 2019 show, Sept. 4 5, 2018 We ll be presenting Pirates for six shows at the Gild Hall (4/26 5/4/2019) and on May 11 th at the Smyrna Opera House. Auditions are planned for Tues. Sept. 4 th and Weds. Sept. 5 th from 7 10pm. Pirates is one of Gilbert & Sullivan s most popular comedies, with some of Sullivan s most memorable songs. The show requires five male and five female leads, and a large chorus of pirates, policemen, and General Stanley s wards. Visit our Auditions Page at www.ardensingers.org for more information, including audition selections, links to.mp3 recordings of the music, and other audition resources. Send an E-mail to ardensingers@gmail.com, or call John Trexler at (484) 319-2350, to be added to our auditions mailing list. Motivated young actors are welcome to participate in the show. Arden Fair (Sept. 1 st ) / Annual General Meeting (Sept. 9 th ): To current, past, or prospective Ardensingers: Contact us soon if you d like to help on Arden Fair Day, Sat. Sept. 1 st, in running the Beer and Wine Booth. We have two-hour shifts, starting at 10am. Our greatest need is in mid- to late- afternoon, particularly after 2pm. Our Annual General Meeting is being held coincident with our Kick-off Rehearsal for Robin Hood on Sunday Sept. 9 th in the Lower Hall. At the AGM we ll review activities of the previous year, discuss the year to come, and elect new Board members. The schedule for the afternoon: Kick-off Party at 1pm, AGM at 1:45pm, rehearsal starts at 2:30pm. E-mail us at ardensingers@gmail.com or call John Trexler at (484) 319-2350 for more information or to express your interest in these events. 2 THE ARDEN CLUB CALENDAR AUG/SEPT 2018

SCHOLARS GILD There is no presentation in either in July or August as we wind down for Summer and prepare for the Fair. We will be back in full force on Tuesday, September 18, at 7:30 pm, with a postponed session that has been slightly amended as, Australia More than Cute Animals and Things that Bite presented by David Scott. The session will help you understand the relationship of Australia to the USA, the similarities and differences between Australian and American cultures, and why the Australians have social benefits such as, universal health care and gun control, that have yet to come to this country. David has spent half his life in each country; he is a citizen of both nations; and has college degrees from the Australian National University and the University of Oklahoma. He feels he has enough insight to dispel the myth that Australian society is like America as it was in the 1950s. The September presentation will be in the Upper Gild Hall as will most but not all sessions during the season: September 2018 to June 2019 inclusive. Please come to the Fair and if you have the time, volunteer for a couple of hours. The Scholars Gild has responsibilities for traffic control within the Fair grounds. We would appreciate your help. Call David Scott 302-383-6127 if you are willing to greet visitors, direct vendor traffic, or enforce open container restrictions. GARDNERS GILD The Gardeners Gild does not meet over the summer. For questions please call or email Gerry Konzelmann, at 897-4729, or ardenclubgardeners@gmail.com. Please be sure to drop by the Plant Booth at the Arden Fair! 6 THE ARDEN CLUB CALENDAR AUG/SEPT 2018

NOTICE: ARDEN CLUB MEMBERSHIP DUES INCREASE Arden Club membership is one of the best values available today anywhere! Membership in the Arden Club offers something for everyone from concerts and live theater performances to dinners and regular library hours. Interest groups for dancing, gardening, writing, bridge, and more round out the regular club opportunities. Our monthly Arden Club Calendar keeps our members informed of coming events. Annual events like the Arden Fair, Holiday Shop and Shady Grove Music Festival are great traditions to share with friends and family. The Gild Hall has undergone massive renovations both upstairs and downstairs thanks to generous donations and wise financial decisions. Over time the cost of maintaining this building as well as continuing to provide comfortable space for both Club events and private rentals has stretched our budget to the limit. Arden Club dues have not increased for more than 10 years! Rest assured, the planned increase is modest and becomes effective only after the Annual Arden Club Meeting scheduled for October 11, 2019.
