The KING S Medium Term Plan Swimming Learning Programme Module 1 Swimming Title Swimming Big Picture The King s Swimming Programme will give pupils the opportunity to improve their swimming ability, no matter what ability they are. Pupils will be taught how to be safe in and around water as well as receiving coaching on their technique. In the first week, all pupils will be assessed so that they can be split into smaller groups of similar abilities this will enable them to receive more personalised teaching / coaching. Over the course of the learning cycle, each individual pupil will be set personalised targets in order for us to assess their progression. Week 1: Water Safety and Assessment Week 2: Frontcrawl Lines of Enquiry: Week 3: Backstroke Week 4: Breaststroke Week 5: Butterfly Week 6: skills Week 7: Assessment against personalised targets
Progress Objectives By the end of the learning cycle, students will be able to: Discuss safety rules and procedures Demonstrate basic water safety Demonstrate good push and glides with streamlining Demonstrate shallow and deep water entries Demonstrate the required elements of front crawl Discuss the difference between unilateral and bilateral breathing techniques Demonstrate the required elements of backstroke Demonstrate the required elements of breaststroke Demonstrate the required elements of butterfly : Demonstrate a racing dive : Demonstrate a tumble turn Assessment in week 7 will be against these objectives Week 1 (2 hours classlearning + 1 hour home learning) LO: Discuss basic safety rules and procedures and demonstrate basic water confidence Lesson 1: Safety Hypothesis: Even Olympic swimmers are not safe in water State at least 3 rules for a swimming pool Describe the procedure that should be carried out in the event of an emergency in a swimming pool Demonstrate basic water confidence (assessment) Week 2 LO: Frontcrawl Hypothesis: Frontcrawl should always be swum with bilateral breathing
Discuss the difference between bilateral and unilateral breathing Demonstrate a strong frontcrawl leg kick Demonstrate good frontcrawl arm technique Analyse the frontcrawl technique of another pupil and provide appropriate feedback : Demonstrate bilateral breathing during full stroke swimming Demonstrate an appropriate frontcrawl turn Understand the rules for frontcrawl swimming and the rules for disqualification during racing Week 3 LO: Backstroke Hypothesis: Your arm should touch your ear while swimming backstroke Discuss the key elements of good backstroke swimming technique Demonstrate good backstroke arm technique Demonstrate good backstroke leg kick Analyse the backstroke technique of another pupil and provide appropriate feedback Demonstrate full stroke backstroke swimming with appropriate technique Demonstrate an appropriate backstroke turn Understand the rules of backtstroke swimming and the rules for disqualification during racing Week 4 LO: Breaststroke
Hypothesis: On breaststroke you should breathe after every arm pull Demonstrate a good breaststroke arm pull Demonstrate a good breaststroke leg kick Understand the key elements of a good underwater breaststroke start Understand the rules of breaststroke turns Demonstrate full stroke breaststroke Demonstrate an underwater breaststroke start and turn Understand the rules for competitive breaststroke swimming and reasons for disqualification Week 5 LO: Butterfly Hypothesis: Butterfly is the slowest of the 4 main swimming strokes Demonstrate the basic butterfly arm action Demonstrate underwater dolphin leg kick Demonstrate full stroke butterfly Demonstrate an appropriate butterfly start and turn Understand the rules for competitive butterfly swimming and the rules for disqualification Week 6 LO: Skills (depending on ability) Beginners
Demonstrate a shallow water dive Demonstrate a front push and glide Demonstrate a back push and glide Skull feet first for 5 metres Skull head first for 5 metres Perform a handstand and hold for a minimum of 3 seconds Demonstrate a competitive racing dive Demonstrate a tumble turn Thread water for a minimum of 30 seconds Scull head first or feet first for 1 minute Gap Analysis Reinforcement Gap Reinforcement (1 hour class learning) This week will be dedicated to assessing the progress made my students against their personalised targets.
