Necessity for Prone Kayaking Curriculum: Intent to create an endorsement for existing and new instructors who want to teach prone kayaking in an instructional setting. What is Prone Kayaking? Prone paddlecraft are boats designed to be piloted by a paddler using bare hands or hand paddles (typically webbed gloves), who is lying in a prone position and who's torso and legs are supported by the boat. Although prone paddling techniques could be applied to other craft (e.g., SUPs, inflatable rafts, etc.), prone paddlecraft are distinguished by design features whose purpose is to support the paddler and/or to enhance maneuverability. Essentially, prone kayaks have many of the features found on whitewater kayak hulls but have changed the interface of the human to the watercraft, and eliminate the sprayskirt thus opening paddlesports to a larger segment of the population by eliminating the fear of being trapped while maintaining the speed and directional control of a traditional kayak. Why is there a need for Prone Kayaking Instruction? Paddlesports evolve as man discovers new ways to interface with the water. The rise of Stand Up Paddleboarding (SUP) is an example of this trend. Prone kayaking is a further evolution of paddling by reducing the amount of gear needed without limiting functionality. Prone Kayaking provides an easy an accessible path to learn paddlesport by eliminating the fear of being trapped and allowing quick and effective self rescue. The skills learned in prone kayaking translate to all other paddlecraft and thus are a great teaching tool along with traditional kayaking and canoeing. Adaptive Paddling: Prone kayaking places the paddler in a prone position and thereby eliminates many of the boundaries and limitations of traditional paddlecraft that require extensive modification and ʻadaptationʼ to effectively help someone with a disability. Issues of entrapment, lateral stability and self rescue are greatly reduced when the paddler is able to ergonomically paddle in a prone position. In addition, prone kayaks work off the shelf for a large segment of those in need of adaptive paddling, thus providing an experience that creates independence, provides mobility, and improves balance. Swiftwater Rescue: A prone kayak provides a stable and effective platform for SWR. It is a quick response tool for a rescuer that allows them to effectively dismount and re-

enter the river in almost any location. This allows the rescuer to place themselves in a rescue ready position more quickly than any other paddlecraft. A prone kayak offers a functional floating ʻlitterʼ that allows transport of unresponsive/ injured victims to a safe location. A prone kayak also offers a stable platform for belaying a rescuer to help a victim, for example someone stuck in a lowhead dam. How big is the sport? Currently there are approximately 1000 prone kayaks in the world. The sport was developed by Adam Masters, inventor of the Bellyak and son of Bill Masters, founder of Perception Kayaks, one of the leaders in developing whitewater kayaking as a legitimate sport. And Why Now? As the sport grows worldwide and prone kayaking is used more and more in Adaptive Paddling and Swiftwater Rescue, a foundation of proper teaching skills based on the ACA model will insure quality instruction and experience, thus growing the base of paddlesports enthusiasts worldwide.

Level 1: Introduction to Prone Kayaking (Sample Skills Course) Course Overview: The Introduction to Prone Paddling course is designed as a short program emphasizing safety, enjoyment and skill acquisition for entry level individuals in the public, private and commercial setting. Prone paddlecraft are boats designed to be piloted by a paddler using bare hands or hand paddles, who is lying in a prone position and who's torso and legs are supported by the boat. Although prone paddling techniques could be applied to other craft (e.g., SUPs, inflatable rafts,...), prone paddlecraft are distinguished by design features whose purpose is to support the paddler and/or to enhance maneuverability.
