Durham Region Cycling Coalition DRCC Promoting Safe Cycling Throughout Durham Region

WHO ARE WE? Founded in 2015, as a voice for the Region s 5 largest cycling club (1,200 + active members) Oshawa Cycling Club Durham Mountain Bike Association Durham Cycling Club Clarington Cycling Club Uxbridge Cycling Club Endorsed by the Region s 5 bike shops Impala, Northern, Bicycle Plus, Cycle Life, Bay Cycle We supports all levels & types of cyclists Including the thousands of local non-club cyclists

WHY? We are promoting Safe Cycling throughout Durham Region, as an Active means of Transportation Why Cycling? Health Sustainability Environmentally Economics savings to health care system, plus less wear and tear to the infrastructure

Map of Uxbridge 15-30 km rings Typical road rider will ride 60-120 km for a club ride your customer base!

Interconnection of cycling routes to the rest of Durham and York Region Advantages of these connections: A) Safer cycling for all!!! B) Cyclists as commuters C) Other Durham/York cyclists visiting Uxbridge ($$) D) Your local cyclists can get out of town" to other areas in Durham and York regions. (Safely!) (UCC) E) Uxbridge is critical to cycle tourism (the intersection) A) GreenBelt route (tourism) B) Hub for mountain bikers with Dagmar, Durham Forest (DMBA) C) Trans Canada trail (tourism) D) Oak Ridges trail (tourism)

Cycling plan and Cycling committee? the starting points of improvements, DRCC advice you need both Do you have a Uxbridge Cycling Plan? A cycling plan lets you 1 st develop and then focus on a longer term view of what is important to Uxbridge They are each unique to the municipality Helps your budgeting and town staff planning Local cyclists do want to help you (DRCC, UCC, DMBA) Do you have a Uxbridge Cycling committee (or Active Transportation Committee)? made up of local residents? Helps locals provide input to the Cycling plan Helps further develop your cycling needs Advisory committee to Uxbridge council regarding AT Both Ajax and Whitby have them Oshawa is close (tonight?)

Cycling infrastructure a team sport useable cycling roads We understand that many of the roads cyclists use are not within Uxbridge s control Like roads in Pickering, Whitby, Scugog & York Region This bigger picture is what the DRCC is communicating to regional leadership. We all need to work together! This is your main tourist cycling route from the south Ashburn Road in Scugog Summer 2014 Summer 2015 Fall 2015

Some recent good progress (good news worth sharing) DMBA/TRCA creation of new Dagmar trails Needed is a 6.9 Km paved shoulder, trail or safe cycle route? Uxbridge has a skate board park and have now approved a pump track Needed is a 1.7 Km paved shoulder or MPT?

Some areas for improvements - page 1 Main St Uxbridge (7th Conc.) needs paved shoulders Was resurfaced at Elgin Park, should have added paved shoulder to make bike friendly for local cyclists (create a cycling route) A Cycling Plan & Active Transportation Committee may have helped? Attract Mountain Bikers to Uxbridge s downtown develop a mountain bike trail from Durham Forest to downtown area. Needed is a 6.9 Km paved shoulder, trail or safe cycle route? Tran Can Trail to Elgin Park from Durham Forest, not cycling friendly Uxbridge skate board park and soon a pump track Improved bike lanes on the road and/or bike trails are needed to get there Needed is a 1.7 Km paved shoulder &/or MPT? They will also need a safe way of crossing the road for pedestrians and cyclists Parents are driving kids here & to soccer this is a missed opportunity

Some areas for improvements - page 2 7th Conc. South needs paved shoulders Start with the hill to make safer for cyclist and cars. Work with Region to add shoulder on.75 km of Durham/York line (Regional Road 30) Between Aurora Road and Wagg Road (a major risk for local cyclists) The DRCC is doing a presentation to DR regarding cycling GAPS Consider alternative routes for Green Belt Route Chalk Lake Road from Con 7 to Ashburn Road Many of the GreenBelt routes through Uxbridge have poor road surfaces for cycling (both for local cyclists and cycle tourist) Wagg Road is a cycling jewel for Uxbridge cyclist Consider adding paved shoulder on cycling routes 5-15% (+savings) See the list DRCC provided of other comments from area cyclist

Some questions to consider A Cycling Plan and Active Trans Committee will help answer these questions Are they all cycle friendly and safe? Are road crossings marked? Are schools, parks and communities connected? Are they way pointed and signed? Do they meet MTO standards for AT trails? Are they part of an overall cycling plan? Are they maintained? Are they well know by locals? Are they advertised or show cased? Do locals want more or better?

Some ideas from local cyclists Consider having a Green Belt route alternative? Stop for water break at Lake Ridge/Chalk Lake Road

Close gaps to Improve safety from DRCC members perspective York/Durham Line (Uxbridge) Pave shoulder Wagg/Aurora -.75 km This is a slide from our DRCC Regional leadership GAP presentation

Close gaps to Improve safety from DRCC members perspective GreenBelt Route - Uxbridge /Pickering town line between 6th concession and York/Durham town line repave road 10 km, plus 6 th Concession N/S pave Road 6 km This is a slide from our DRCC Regional leadership GAP presentation

Our advice to start Create a Active Transportation Committee of council Develop a Uxbridge Cycling Plan (with your ATC) Upgrade and repair a few know cycling routes Add cycling into your 2016 budget (don t put it off) Support active transportation and healthy citizens Promoting Safe Cycling Throughout Durham Region

We are all in this together We do understand it can NOT all be done in 2016 But we need to start, for the health, safety and enjoyment of your citizens Thank you for the invitation for the DRCC to come speak to you Do you have any questions? Promoting Safe Cycling Throughout Durham Region
