Foreword Welcome to the 11th Annual Cascade Bull Sale Thankyou to all clients, new and old for making our 2013 bull so pleasing. In what has been another challenging season across a large part of the country we are offering a high quality line up of Poll Hereford and Angus bulls. We feel these bulls have the commercial attributes that will see them present in forward condition and ready to work.. The 2014 sale bulls have all been semen tested, Pestivirus tested, 7 in 1, Vibrio, 3 day sickness vaccinated and drenched with Dectomax. After some later than ideal rainfall we have been able to graze oats since the end of May. A light grain ration was fed with silage earlier in the year. As with last years sale the Cascade team will deliver the sale bulls as soon as possible after the sale. We find this service a pleasure, to see the operations the bulls are destined for and to catch up with you outside of the sale day. In our endeavour to continue breeding top quality livestock Jack travelled to the US and Canada late in 2013. During the trip Jack was able to view many current A.I sires and their progeny and then to select those that best meet out selection criteria. Also during 2013 we undertook our largest ET program to date. We are looking forward to seeing the progeny over the next year. We look forward to your company on Wednesday the 16th July or prior for inspection of our 2014 sale bulls. 3
Cascade El Dorado E27 Cascade El Dorado E27 a young sire with a great future was accepted as a sire in the Herefords Australia Progeny Test. We look forward to the outcome of this testing. El Dorado has been used throughout Australia by a number of leading studs. Semen has been used in Canada and is heading to New Zealand. Getting the most from your new bull Buying a bull is a long term investment in the future genetics and sale income of your herd. To get the most from your new bull, it pays to look after him well, especially in the first season of use. It is worth considering insurance to cover transport and the first three to six months of use. Complete the delivery instructions supplied by the vendor or agent. Before you take delivery of your new bull, please check the front of our catalogue for a list of treatments that your new bull has received. Once you take delivery of your new bull we recommend the following: Our sale bulls have all run in large mobs since weaning and are comfortable with mates around. If you can arrange it have a few PTIC cows or steers in the yards when your new bull or bulls arrive, just to keep them company while they adjust to their new surroundings. Our sale bulls have all been worked with a combination of a 4wheel motorbike, horse or ute with the controlled use of a dog. We handle all our cattle quietly and with respect. A new bull is a big investment look after him and you will be rewarded. Progeny represented in this sale catalogue. 4
Sale Day Safety All sale bulls have been screened for temperament and are under normal circumstances, quiet to handle. However, there are inherent risks associated with cattle handling. Visitors enter the cattle pens at their own risk. Children must not enter the yards. People entering the yards are at risk of injury. Be especially alert for bulls fighting and pushing around the pens and if one is playful with you do not respond by patting his head. What a bull considers a playful nudge can do physical harm to any human. We do not expect our bulls to be aggressive, but sale day places extraordinary pressure on them as they experience an entirely foreign environment. Remember even the quietest bull can in fact be an unpredictable animal. Do not crowd the bulls inside the pens. There are many dangers involved in handling livestock, so please use commonsense and be alert at all times. Do not enter pens unnecessarily. Please call upon any of the agents for an escort through the bulls if required. The days of bravado with stock have passed under the current OH&S legislation. 5
BREEDPLAN EXPLANATION BREEDPLAN is a performance valuation program that describes the genetic profile of bulls for a number of commercially important traits. This profile is given as an Estimated Breeding Value (EBV), expressed as a figure (+/-) relative to the breed benchmark of zero (0) for each trait. The EBVs in this catalogue are Poll Hereford Group Breedplan EBVs and Angus Group Breedplan EBVs and can be directly compared with Poll Hereford Group Breedplan EBVs and Angus Group Breedplan EBVs from other herds. To evaluate the performance profile of a bull, its EBVs can be directly compared with the EBVs of other bulls, against the breed benchmark of zero (0) or against the current breed average EBV for each trait, which for the 2012 calving year was (for Poll Hereford and Angus): GROUP BREEDPLAN AVERAGE EBV S FOR 2012 DROP CALVES Calving Ease DIR (%) Calving Ease DTRS (%) Gestational Length (days) Birth Wt (kg) 200 Day Wt (kg) 400 Day Wt (kg) 600 Day Wt (kg) Mat Cow Wt (kg) Milk (kg) Poll Hereford -0.2 +1.0 +0.1 +4.3 +28 +45 +65 +62 +13 Angus -0.4-0.1-3.1 +4.4 +39 +72 +94 +84 +13 Scrotal size (cm) Days to Calving (days) Carcase Wt (kg) Eye Muscle Area (sq cm) Rib Fat (mm) Rump Retail Beef Fat (mm) Yield (%) IMF (%) Trial Docility Poll Hereford +1.5-2.0 +40 +2.8 +0.2 +0.1 +0.8 +0.1 +2 Angus +1.6-3.3 +52 +4.2-0.2-0.2 +0.4 +1.3 +3 EBVS ARE PROVIDED FOR THE FOLLOWING TRAITS ACCURACY (%) ~ Provides an indication of the reliability of an EBV. As more performance information becomes available on an animal (or it's progeny, or relatives) then the accuracy of it's EBVs for particular traits will increase. See Understanding Accuracies (http://www.angusaustralia.com.au/bp_understanding_accu.htm) for a more detailed explanation. TRAITS OBSERVED ~ Indicates those traits that have been recorded and are contributing to the EBV's calculated for an animal. (These should appear directly below the table displaying the animals EBV's). CALVING EASE DIR (%) ~ Estimates of the genetic differences between animals in the ability of their calves from 2 year old heifers to be delivered without assistance. CALVING EASE DTRS (%) ~ Estimates of the genetic differences between animals in the ability of their 2 year old daughters to calve without assistance. GESTATION LENGTH (DAYS) ~ Estimates of the genetic differences between animals in the number of days from the date of conception to the calf birth date. BIRTH WT (KG) ~ Estimates of the genetic differences between animals in calf birth weight. 200-DAY WT (KG) ~ Estimates of the genetic differences between animals in liveweight at 200 days of age. 400-DAY WT (KG) ~ Estimates of the genetic differences between animals in liveweight at 400 days of age. 6
600-DAY WT (KG) ~ Estimates of the genetic differences between animals in liveweight at 600 days of age. MATURE COW WEIGHT (KG) ~ Estimates of the genetic differences between animals in cow weight at 5 years of age. MILK (KG) ~ Estimates of the genetic differences between animals in milk production, expressed as variation in 200-day weight of daughter's calves. SCROTAL SIZE (CM) ~ Estimates of the genetic differences between animals in scrotal circumference at 400 days of age. DAYS TO CALVING ~ Estimates of the genetic differences in female fertility, expressed as the number of days from the start of the joining period until subsequent calving. CARCASE WEIGHT (KG) ~ Estimates of the genetic differences between animals in carcase weight, adjusted to 650 days of age. EYE MUSCLE AREA (CM2) ~ Estimates of the genetic differences between animals in eye muscle area at the 12/13th rib site, in a 300kg carcase. RIB FAT (MM) ~ Estimates of the genetic differences between animals in fat depth at the 12/13th rib site, in a 300 kg carcase. RUMP FAT (MM) ~ Estimates of the genetic differences between animals in fat depth at the P8 rump site, in a 300kg carcase RETAIL BEEF YIELD % (RBY%) ~ Estimates of the genetic differences between animals in percentage retail beef yield, in a 300kg carcase. INTRA-MUSCULAR FAT % (IMF%) ~ Estimates of the genetic differences between animals in percentage intra-muscular fat (marbling) at the 12/13th rib site, in a 300 kg carcase. DOCILITY TRIAL ~ Docility EBVs are expressed as differences in the percentage of progeny that will be scored with acceptable temperament (ie. either "docile" or "restless"). Higher, more positive, Docility EBVs are more favourable. For example, a bull with an EBV of +20 would be expected to on average produce 15% more progeny with acceptable temperament than a bull with an EBV of -10. NET FEED INTAKE TRIAL (KG/DAY ~ Estimates of the genetic differences between animals for feed efficiency. Long fed / Certified Australian Angus Beef $ Index ~ based on a high fertility self replacing commercial Angus herd where steers are grown out to be long fed for the high quality, high marbled Japanese export market. Selection of animals using this index will increase IMF % of your herd, and emphasis is also placed on 600 day growth. Short Fed Domestic $ Index ~ based on a high fertility self replacing Angus herd selling feeder steers and heifers for the short fed domestic feedlot trade. Emphasis is placed on growth to 400 days and high carcase yield while maintaining fertility and marbling. Heavy Grass Fed Steer $ Index ~ based on a self replacing herd that sells heavy grass fed steers for markets like the EU and light grass fed Jap Ox. Emphasis is on growth and carcase yield while maintaining fertility and marbling. Terminal $ Index ~ for herds where no animals are kept for breeding. For example using Angus bulls over dairy cross cows for vealer production or over tropical cows with steers and heifers grown out for short feeding. Emphasis is on growth and carcase yield with no weighting placed on calving ease, female fertility or milk. NB. Actual $Index Values for individual animals are sensitive to the assumptions used in the BREEDOBJECT analysis used to calculate the selection index. NB. EBVs and $Index Values are calculated using software developed by the Animal Genetics and Breeding Unit (AGBU), a joint institute of NSW Agriculture and The University of New England. Ongoing research and development at AGBU is supported by funding provided by Meat and Livestock Australia. 7
