He went to the University of Kentucky on a football scholarship. COL. JAMES E. BEAN Athlete 1939-1941 Col. Bean played football and basketball at Bardstown High School. The 1941 football team was unbeaten, untied, and unscored upon having a record of 8 0. They outscored their opponents by 285 0. Col. Bean was the signal caller on offense and the fullback. He was a member of the West Kentucky All-Stars, All-S.C.K.C. and third team All-State. World War II cut his college career short. He joined the Army Air Corps and was called to duty in February of 1943. He served in World War II, Korea, and Viet Nam. He played football for the military for 3 years. As a USAF pilot, he had many close calls including being shot down by a missile in Viet Nam. He was held as a POW for over 5 years in a prison in Hanoi built by the French before 1900. Col. Bean retired from the military in September, 1974. He is a farmer and lists one of his favorite memories of Bardstown High School as scoring a touchdown on a 96 yard run from punt formation against Springfield in the last game of the 1941 season. During the run, he credits a great offensive line for blocking every Springfield defender encountered. The run helped keep the 1941 storybook season perfect!
JAMES BOO BREWER 1985-1986 While at Bardstown, Boo starred in football, basketball, track and baseball. In basketball, he lettered 5 years and made numerous alltournament, all-district and all-region teams. In addition, he was named to the All-State team 3 times and was runner-up to Mr. Kentucky Basketball his senior year. In 1988, he was named to the McDonald s All-American team. He graduated from Bardstown with 2496 career points. Also in 1988, he played in the Kentucky-Indiana All-Star games and was the leading scorer. In football, he lettered 4 years and was a 2-time member of the All-State teams. He was chosen to be a member of the Kentucky All-Star team that played the Tennessee All-Stars. He scored 27 touchdowns in a single season and was runner-up to Mr. Kentucky Football and a Gatorade All- American. For his career, he had over 4600 total yards and scored 46 touchdowns. In track, he won numerous medals and was a state champion 3 times. He made All-State in track 4 times and in 1988 he was an All-American track and field athlete. He went on to star in basketball at the University of Louisville from 1988-1993. There he held the record for the most 3-point shots made in a game for 11 years and the most steals in a game for 3 years. He won Metro Tournament awards for the best free-throw shooter and best 3 point shooter for 2 consecutive years. He went on to play professional basketball in Europe for 14 years. He has been inducted into the Dawahare s Kentucky High School Athletic Association s Hall of Fame. He is the proud father of 3 children, Sheyla, Jordan, and Alexis. He enjoys giving back to his children what his parents, teachers, and coaches gave him.
LIBBY STULTZ BURR TEACHER-COACH, 1968-1999 Libby Burr taught Health and Physical Education at Bardstown High School. In addition, she was the girl s track coach for 15 years and the cheerleader coach for 28 years. During her tenure, her track teams won 3 regional championships and a sectional championship. As cheerleader coach, her squads won 16 district titles and 3 regional titles, in addition to several district and regional runner-ups. She has served as 5 th Region Cheerleader Chairperson and a longstanding member of the Board of Directors of KAPOS. She was selected as the 1991 Kentucky Cheerleader Coach of the Year and 1992 National Cheerleader Coach of the Year. In addition, she is a member of the Belfry High School Athletic Hall of Fame and the 5 th Region Athletic Director s Hall of Fame. She actively participates in community activities serving in the Stephen Foster Music Club, a member of the John Fitch Chapter of DAR, Nelson County Retired Teacher s Association, and the Bardstown United Methodist Church. She is married to Ben Burr and has 2 children, John Burr and Dr. Amy Farrell.
AMOS MARTIN 1964-1967 Amos was a standout athlete at Bardstown High School, participating in football, basketball, and baseball. He received honors as an All District basketball player and Honorable Mention All-State football player. He is proud to be a part of the rich and winning heritage of Bardstown High School athletics, not only on the athletic fields but also as dedicated winners off the field. He went on to play collegiate football at the University of Louisville and was named to the All Missouri Valley team in 1971. Amos played in the National Football League from 1972 through 1977. He was a linebacker with the Minnesota Vikings from 1972 through 1976, intercepting 5 passes during the 1973 season. He participated in the Super Bowl in 1973, 1974, and 1976. He finished his NFL career in 1977 with the Seattle Seahawks. Amos is a highly respected businessman in Louisville, Kentucky. He is a successful homebuilder and developer. He is a long-standing chairman of the Youth For Christ Golf Tournament and Fellowship of Christian Athletes Golf Tournament in the Louisville area. In addition, he has followed the steps of his mentor, Garnis Martin, in coaching Lyndon Recreation Football for over 20 years.
GARNIS MARTIN TEACHER-COACH, 1952 1989 Coach Martin served Bardstown High School as athletic director and coach for 37 years. During that time he was the school s football coach (1952 1989), basketball coach (1953 1978), track coach (1955 1973), and baseball coach (1953 1959). He taught Driver s Education, Physical Education, and Health. His coaching accomplishments included 269 wins, 98 losses, and 7 ties in football. His teams won 12 Mid-Kentucky Conference titles, reached the playoffs 15 times winning 11 district championships, 7 regional championships, 1 Class A State Runner-up, 2 Class A State Championships, and 1 Class AA State Championship. In addition, he coached 6 regular season undefeated teams. In basketball Coach Martin had a record of 225 wins and 179 losses including 2 Fifth Region titles (1969 and 1971). In track, his teams won 5 regional titles and 2 Class A State Championships (1970 and 1971). Coach Martin won state and national acclaim for his exploits in football. He was State Class A Coach of the Year in 1968 and State Class AA Coach of the Year in 1976 and 1981. He was the statewide Kentucky Coach of the Year for football in 1977. He was the National High School Coaches Association football Coach of the Year for Region III in 1986. In addition to his state and national acclaim, he was named recipient of the Happy Chandler Award for contributions to Kentucky high school football, the State Distinguished Service Award for football, member of the Kentucky Athletic Hall of Fame, and a charter member of Dawahare s Kentucky High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame. He was named Bardstown Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year in 1968 and received the Distinguished Service Award NFICA, Section II in 1988. Coach Martin retired as the head coach with the most wins in Kentucky High School football.
JOE LEE PHILLIPS 1968 1971 Joe Lee participated in football, basketball, and track while a studentathlete at Bardstown High School. His senior year, 1970 1971, was called The Year of the Tiger. He participated on the Class A State Championship football team, the Fifth Region Championship basketball team, which went on to the state basketball tournament, and the Class A State Championship track team. He received Honorable Mention All-State in football, All- District and All-Region in basketball in both his junior and senior years. He went on to star in football at the University of Louisville from 1971 1975, making the All-Missouri Valley team his junior year. Joe Lee was named preseason conference defensive player of the year his senior year which was cut short after 3 games due to an injury. However, he was named University of Louisville s most outstanding player his senior year. He is a very successful Louisville businessman being the co-founder/owner of TravelPlex Hikes Point. It is Kentucky s oldest and largest minority owned travel agency. He has received national recognition as the 1989 National Minority Supplier of the Year and 1993 Minority Service Firm of the Year. In addition, he has served on the National Minority Supplier Development Council and the U.S. Department of Commerce Minority Business Development Agency. He is married to Rita Y. (Hawkins) Phillips and they are the very proud parents of 2 daughters, Candice and Joleen.
DR. KENNETH L. STINNETTE ATHLETIC TEAM PHYSICIAN sidelines in tight situations. Dr. Stinnette was affectionately known as Doc to the many athletes that he administered to during his tenure as athletic team physician for the football and basketball teams of Bardstown High School. He served the football team on the field for over 30 years and was one of the state leaders in getting immediate and follow-up medical care to the injured athletes. The many physicals given and office visits were done at little or no cost to the athlete. During that 30-year time span, Dr. Stinnette faithfully attended all athletic events even to the extent of riding the team bus to away games. He often led cheers on the Dr. Stinnette was a practicing family physician in Bardstown for 47 years. He is often seen in team pictures celebrating major victories and was considered a vital part of the athletic staff, not only by the coaches but also by the athletes. One of his many favorite memories of Bardstown High School was Coach Martin s gourmet baloney sandwiches on the team bus rides home from the away games.
