Indian Pride Volume 8. Issue 2 August 25th, 2017 Minooka Intermediate School Newsletter Indian PRIDE Arrows Native American Indians were a deeply spiritual people and they communicated their history, thoughts, ideas and dreams from generation to generation through symbols and signs such as the Arrow symbol. We have chosen the Arrow to represent the 3R s at Minooka Intermediate. Students who consistently demonstrate the three R s (Responsible, Respectful, and Ready) will be rewarded by staff members with an Indian Pride Arrow. When an Arrow is given, students will bring the Arrow to the office to become part of the Friday drawing. Each Friday students will be drawn to celebrate their achievements. Indian Pride At Minooka Intermediate School, we like to reward students who exhibit strong character throughout the building. A few ways that we reward these students are, PRIDE Arrows, Quarterly Reward Parties, and Feathers In your Headdress. Another component of Indian Pride that we will be stressing this year is school and team spirit. Quarterly Reward Parties Teachers also keep track of students who exhibit strong character and responsibility throughout each quarter. Students can qualify to participate in a Quarterly Milestone Celebration. The criteria to qualify are below: Quarterly Reward Parties Criteria: 5 th Grade: All assignments are turned in Must be earning at least 76% in all subject areas No severe behavior referrals (In-School/Out of School Suspensions and other behaviors determined by administrator) 6 th Grade: All assignments are turned in Must be earning at least 76% in all subject areas No severe behavior referrals (In-School/Out of School Suspensions and other behaviors determined by administrator) No more than two No Dresses for Physical Education Feathers in Your Headdress Feathers in Your Headdress are earned by 5 th and 6 th grade teams who consistently follow the rules during lunch. Each team has their own Indian head that is hung up in the commons. When a team has demonstrated appropriate lunchroom behavior, or goes out of their way to be helpful and kind, they will be rewarded with a feather. The team that has the most feathers at the end of the month earns 30 minutes of free time in the gym. Spirit Days Students at Minooka Intermediate are divided into teams, and each team is given a color. This year we are encouraging students to show pride for their teams by participating in school wide Spirit Days. Every Friday students are encouraged to wear Minooka spirit wear, Minooka colors of blue and white, or their team shirt (order form on the next page!). We will also hold quarterly assemblies. On these days students are encouraged to represent their teams by wearing their team color. The teams that show the most team spirit by having the largest number of students on that team participate each month will be awarded the Spirit Stick for that month. We look forward to seeing the halls flooded with team spirit!

Staff Celebrations A Staff Celebration program was started because we think MIS staff is tremendous and would like to show appreciation and acknowledgement for some of the amazing things happening at MIS weekly! You can nominate all MIS staff members (teachers, classroom aides, custodians, secretaries, social workers, speech pathologists, occupational therapists, etc.) for going above and beyond to make each day special. You may nominate a staff member for ANYTHING positive. A staff member of the week will be chosen based on these nominations! You can find the link labeled Staff Celebrations on the Minooka Intermediate School website to make your nominations! Or type this link into your browser: http://goo.gl/forms/qejbytto8i

Minooka 201 Phone App Available now for parents to receive important information from MIS! To receive access to our app go to your app store on your device and search for Minooka 201. The app is free of charge! On the app there are many features such as important alerts, a calendar of events, links to Minooka 201 websites, the MIS Weekly Newsletter, daily announcements, and access to important documents and forms. Get the app today to stay informed! Safety Drills at MIS District 201 s top priority is the safety of our students and staff. To that end, each school conducts several safety drills throughout the school year. These safety drills include fire drills, tornado drills, bus evacuation drills, and lockdown drills. We have had some of these drills already this year. The procedures for the drills were developed with the Minooka Police Department and are annually reviewed and revised with the Minooka departments of Police, Fire, and Emergency Response teams to reflect best practices in safety procedures. This means, as part of our routine safety drills, that these departments will be present at the drills to practice evacuation and stay in place procedures in case of an actual emergency. Please, talk to your child about the importance of listening to staff for directions during emergency situations and drills.
