His teams have averaged more than 23 victories per year, putting his name alongside the nation s premier women s basketball coaches. Green has accumulated a 237-77 record on the Liberty bench, good for a winning percentage of.755. He currently ranks ninth all-time among NCAA Division I women s basketball coaches in winning percentage, ahead of renowned coaching names like Rutgers Vivian Stringer, LSU s Van Chancellor and North Carolina s Sylvia Hatchell. More importantly, Liberty has won the Big South Tournament title and advanced to the NCAA Tournament nine times with Green as head coach. Liberty has totaled 23 or more victories during eight of those years, including the 2004-05 season, which saw the Lady Flames reach the Sweet 16 for the fi rst time in program history. Green has actually been to the postseason on 21 occasions as a women s basketball coach, a span which includes a dozen years as an assistant coach at Clemson. In all but one of the 21 appearances, he has experienced the NCAA Tournament. Last season, Green earned his unprecedented fi fth Big South Coach of the Year award, after guiding a team decimated by ACL injuries to a 24-9 record and its 12th NCAA Tournament appearance in the last 13 years. The Lady Flames also won the Hokie Hardwood Classic, claiming their fi rst-ever victory over Virginia Tech in the tournament championship game. At season s end, Green saw his second player selected in the WNBA Draft, as Megan Frazee was taken in the second round by the San Antonio Silver Stars. She then played part of her rookie season alongside 2005 Liberty alum Katie (Feenstra) Mattera in San Antonio. Rebounding and defense have always been staples of Green-coached teams, and the 2008-09 Lady Flames were no exception. Liberty outrebounded opponents by an average of 12.7 caroms per game, ranking second nationally. The Lady Flames have now been listed among the nation s top fi ve teams in rebounding margin for six straight years. Liberty led the nation in the category in 2003-04 and 2004-05. The Lady Flames also ended the season ranked in the top 10 nationally for scoring defense (second, 52.6 ppg) and fi eld goal percentage defense (sixth,.345). A key late-season conference victory over High Point in 2006 made Green the winningest coach in Big South Conference history. He is also Liberty s career wins leader. The 2004-05 year was a special one on Liberty Mountain, for many reasons. A seniorladen Lady Flames team recorded upset wins over No. 4 seed Penn State (78-70) and No. 5 seed DePaul (88-79) in the fi rst two rounds of the NCAA Tournament, becoming just the second team ever to advance to the Sweet 16 as a No. 13 seed. The Lady Flames ended the season with their highest national ranking to date, No. 21 (USA Today/ESPN). Green s track record shows he has the ability to meet those challenges. The Lady Flames have recorded two wins over UNLV, Virginia and West Virginia and solo victories over No. 19 DePaul, No. 17 Kansas State, No. 25 Penn State, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest during Green s tenure. The upset victory over No. 25 Virginia in 2003 marked Liberty s fi rst win over a Top 25 team. His record against conference foes is equally impressive. He led the Lady Flames on a Big South record 47-game winning streak and currently owns a.917 (154-14) winning percentage against conference teams. Green has marched through conference play with one or fewer setbacks seven times, while guiding the Lady Flames to two undefeated conference seasons.

WSSU fi nished the campaign on a positive note, winning three of its last four outings. With four starters returning from last year s squad, the Rams are aiming for continued improvement this season. Winston-Salem State s top three scorers from last season are back, paced by James Madison transfer MaLisa Bumpus. The 5-7 junior guard tossed in 12.2 ppg during her fi rst year with the Rams. Vontisha Woods, a 6-0 junior foward, who led the 2008-09 Rams in rebounding with 8.5 rpg, is also back in the lineup. The Rams roster includes zero seniors, meaning their game at Liberty will feature only one senior on either team (Lady Flames point guard ). Twelve of Winston-Salem State s 13 players are either sophomores or juniors. The Coaching Matchup Liberty Head Coach Carey Green is in his 11th season with the Lady Flames, and has led his team to nine Big South titles. A fi ve-time Big South Coach of the Year, Green owns a 237-77 career record and is the all-time wins leader at Liberty and among Big South women s basketball coaches. His career winning percentage (.755) ranks ninth all-time among NCAA Division I women s basketball coaches at the season s outset. Green is 1-0 all-time versus Winston-Salem State. Dee Stokes is beginning her fourth season at Winston-Salem State, where she has posted a 17-69 overall record. She is 67-121 in six total years as a collegiate head coach, which also includes three seasons as East Carolina s head coach. Stokes, who recently announced that she intends to step down as head coach following the 2009-10 season, is 0-1 all-time versus Liberty. She also faced the Lady Flames six times as a Winthrop assistant, in 2004-05 and 2005-06, with Liberty taking all six contests. Liberty-Winston-Salem State Series Notes Liberty and Winston-Salem State will be squaring off for only the second time on Friday, and the game will mark the Rams fi rst visit to the Vines Center. The Lady Flames lead the head-to-head series 1-0, after claiming a 55-43 win at the C.E. Gaines Center on Dec. 20, 2008. led Liberty to victory with a career-high 17 points and nine rebounds, while scored all 13 of her points after halftime. MaLisa Bumpus, making her Winston-Salem State debut, paced the home team with 13 points. Liberty Versus the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Liberty is 30-19 all-time versus the current MEAC membership, and the Lady Flames have won 28 consecutive games against MEAC opposition. North Carolina A&T was the last MEAC squad to beat the Lady Flames, edging Liberty, 44-43, on Feb. 15, 1996. Liberty is 3-1 all-time against Bethune-Cookman, 5-11 against Hampton, 3-3 against Maryland-Eastern Shore, 1-0 against Morgan State, 7-0 against Norfolk State, 6-3 against North Carolina A&T, 4-1 against South Carolina State and 1-0 against Winston-Salem State. Under Carey Green, Liberty is 5-5 in its fi rst game of the season, including a perfect 4-1 record at home and a 1-4 mark when the Lady Flames open up away from the Vines Center. Home Openers The Lady Flames 59-57 loss to VCU on Nov. 14, 2008 at the Vines Center snapped Liberty s seven-game winning streak in home openers. The Lady Flames are now 8-2 in their fi rst home game of the year under Carey Green s direction. Seven of Liberty s homeopening triumphs during the span have come by 19 points or more. Nifty in November Liberty is 58-37 all-time during the month of November, and the Lady Flames have gone 23-19 during the year s 11th month with Carey Green as head coach. Last season, the Lady Flames struggled during the opening month of the season, going 1-4. Liberty s lone November win in 2008-09 was notable, as a 45-44, buzzer-beating triumph over UC Riverside on Nov. 21 marked the fi rst Preseason WNIT victory in program history. This season, the Lady Flames are scheduled to play fi ve November contests. After beginning the year with home tilts against Winston-Salem State (Nov. 13) and UNC Greensboro (Nov. 17), Liberty will head to Annapolis, Md., for a pair of games at the Navy Classic (Nov. 20-21). The month s schedule will draw to a close Nov. 28, when the Lady Flames make their fi rst-ever visit to Lafayette. After dropping its fi rst two home contests of the year to VCU and Auburn in 2008-09, Liberty won all of its remaining games at the Vines Center to fi nish with a 10-2 home mark. Liberty has also won 14 consecutive Big South home games since UNC Asheville defeated the Lady Flames at the Vines Center by a 54-51 score on Feb. 24, 2007. Turning Up the Heat in the Furnace The 2009-10 campaign is the 18th season the Liberty University women s basketball team has called the Vines Center its full-time home. Liberty s fi rst-ever contest at the Vines Center was an 86-74 loss to East Tennessee State, on Dec. 7, 1990, but the Furnace has served as a favorable venue for the Lady Flames over the years. Liberty is 188-51 (.787) all-time at the Vines Center, including 10-2 last season. The Lady Flames have 15 home games scheduled this season. A Good Omen? Liberty is slated to play 15 home games this season, for the fi rst time since the 1997-98 campaign. That year, the Lady Flames were 15-0 at home and carried a perfect 28-0 record into the NCAA Tournament. Liberty Versus Non-Conference Opposition Last season, Liberty went 6-8 versus non-conference opponents, pushing its all-time record in non-conference tilts to 266-293. The Lady Flames went 2-2 in non-conference home games and have won 11 of their last 13 non-big South tilts at the Vines Center. Liberty s best-ever season against non-conference foes came in 1997-98, when the Lady Flames went 14-1 outside the Big South. Liberty s lone non-conference setback that season came to eventual national champion Tennessee in the fi rst round of the NCAA Tournament. Lady Flames to Face Wide Variety of Non-Conference Foes Liberty is scheduled to face opponents from eight different conferences this season, including CAA (James Madison) Conference USA (Tulane), Ivy (Cornell), MEAC (North Carolina A&T, Winston-Salem State), Patriot (Lafayette), SEC (Auburn), Southern (UNC Greensboro) and WVIAC (Glenville State) foes. Depending on how the Navy Classic and Marriott Cavalier Classic play out, the Lady Flames could also square off with teams from the ACC (Virginia) and MAAC (Loyola (Md.)). Tar Heel State Tests Friday s game against Winston-Salem State will be the fi rst of nine contests Liberty plays against teams hailing from North Carolina this season. The Lady Flames are also slated to face Gardner-Webb (twice), High Point (twice), North Carolina A&T, North Carolina Central, UNC Asheville (twice) and UNC Greensboro. In 2008-09, the Lady Flames were 8-2 versus teams from the state directly to their south, highlighted by a win over Gardner-Webb in the Big South Championship title game. Keeping Good Company Liberty fi nished the 2008-09 season ranked in the top 10 nationally in four statistical categories. The Lady Flames ended up No. 2 in both scoring defense (52.6 ppg allowed) and rebound margin (+12.7). They were also No. 6 in fi eld goal percentage defense (.345) and No. 10 in fi eld goal percentage (.456). Liberty has now ranked as one of the nation s top fi ve teams for rebounding margin for six consecutive seasons. The only other NCAA Division I women s basketball team to end up in the top 10 of those four statistical categories last year was undefeated national champion Connecticut. There is Only One Point guard is the only senior on this year s team roster. Liberty has not had so few seniors since the 2005-06 Lady Flames played the season without a single senior.

The Lady Flames have gone 147-45 and won fi ve Big South titles during Stephens tenure and made the Sweet 16 of the 2005 NCAA Tournament. Same Number, New Face It may take a few games for Liberty fans to get used to seeing a new player wearing the No. 40 uniform, after donned the number for the last four seasons. Among many other accomplishments and accolades, Frazee graduated as the No. 2 scorer (1,883 points) and No. 3 rebounder (951 rebounds) in program history, leaving some very big shoes to fi ll. Liberty s new No. 40, Devon Brown, will attempt to help the Lady Flames replace Frazee s contributions. Brown compiled some very impressive statistics during her career at Waynesboro High School, ranking among the top performers in Virginia history. She graduated from Waynesboro in 2008 ranked as the No. 2 scorer (2,728 points) and No. 3 rebounder (1,329 rebounds) in Commonwealth history. Tallest Since Feenstra Carra Coy, one of three new freshmen on this year s team, stands 6-6. That makes the Summerville, S.C., native the tallest Lady Flame since 6-8 Katie Feenstra graduated after the 2004-05 campaign. International Flavor Freshman Jelena Antic hails from Skopje, Macedonia, giving Liberty an international player on its roster for the 16th consecutive season. The last time the Lady Flames roster consisted solely of American-born players was the 1993-94 campaign. Every Carey Green-coached team at Liberty has featured at least one international player. Local Flavor Even though Jelena Antic was born in Macedonia, she played high school basketball at Liberty Christian Academy in Lynchburg, Va. She is one of four current Lady Flames who attended high school within 70 miles of the Liberty campus, joining (Hidden Valley), Devon Brown (Waynesboro) and Brittany Campbell (Brookville).

Since that contest at the Millis Center, the Lady Flames have played 76 consecutive games without needing extra time. The Lady Flames most recent overtime victory came on Jan. 6, 2004, when Liberty defeated American, 76-72, on the road in double overtime. No current Lady Flame has won an overtime contest in college. Liberty s most recent overtime contest at the Vines Center was a memorable one. The Lady Flames defeated Virginia, 77-69, in overtime on Nov. 26, 2002, to claim their fi rstever win over the Cavaliers. It also marked Liberty s fi rst win over a ranked opponent, as Virginia entered the game with a No. 25 national ranking. A-MAYS-ing Amber Senior point guard enjoyed a strong fi rst season with the Lady Flames in 2008-09, after spending her fi rst two years of college at State Fair Community College. Numerous times, she recorded certain statistics which were the fi rst since... or most since... Here are a look at some of Mays notable accomplishments from last season. -- Played the most minutes (1,002) in program history since Stacey White in 1989-90. -- Tallied the most steals (68) by a Lady Flame since Sharon Wilkerson in 1999-2000. -- Finished with the most assists (126) by a Lady Flame since Sarah Wilkerson in 1998-99. -- Came up with eight steals against East Tennessee State on Jan. 13, the most by a Lady Flame since Sharon Wilkerson had eight versus High Point on Feb. 21, 2000. -- Totaled 10 points, eight assists, six rebounds and fi ve steals against St. Paul s on Dec. 13, recording the fi rst 10-5-5-5 stat line by a Lady Flame since Sharon Wilkerson accomplished the feat Feb. 18, 1999 against UNC Asheville. Windex Warley immediately endeared herself to head coach Carey Green last season as a redshirt freshman, by virtue of her exceptional rebounding ability. The Washington, D.C., native fi nished her rookie season with 256 rebounds, which ranks second among freshmen in program history (behind Cheri Yates 267 rebounds in 1988-89). For Brown, Friday s game against Winston-Salem State has been a long time in coming. After redshirting the 2008-09 season, the Waynesboro, Va., native has not played in a competitive game since March 15, 2008. That day, Brown s Waynesboro High School team faced s Hidden Valley squad in the Virginia Group AA state title game at VCU s Alltel Pavilion. Brown scored 19 points for the Little Giants, but Beecher countered with 21 points and 16 rebounds, helping Hidden Valley capture its second consecutive state championship. Filling the Void Graduated senior paced the 2008-09 Lady Flames with 42 made three-pointers. It is unclear at this time how Liberty will replace her outside scoring punch, as the Lady Flames seven returning players have combined to make just 37 career triples. Leading the way is Rachel McLeod, who has knocked down 21 three-pointers during her fi rst two seasons at Liberty, shooting 31.3 percent from beyond the arc. Redshirt freshman Brittany Campbell connected on six triples in just fi ve games last year, before suffering a season-ending knee injury Dec. 2 at James Madison. A Winning Tradition Liberty had never won more than 16 games in a season until 1996-97, when the Lady Flames captured their fi rst-ever Big South Conference title. That year, Liberty went 22-8. Since then, the Lady Flames have never won fewer than 18 games and have recorded 11 total 20-win seasons. An Uncommon Occurrence The Lady Flames will open the season with back-to-back home games for only the second time in Carey Green s 11 seasons as head coach. In 2004-05, Liberty hosted Virginia Union and Richmond to open its Sweet 16 season, claiming an 83-56 victory over the Panthers and dropping a 65-45 contest at the hands of the Spiders.
