ERG ON, GARTH! By Paula Labadie If any of you have a 2006 resolution of getting rid of the fat deposits in places that don t look good in Spandex, we have the ticket get on that erg and enter those meters into your personal training profile and hook it up with the ERC meter tally on Concept 2. ERC has dropped from a very respective ranking of 92 in 2005 thanks in large part to Don Treadwell and Bob & Linda Powell to a disappointing 210! Now we know injury has kept the Jarosz Duo from participating, but what about the rest of you? We know you are sweating out there somewhere and it just takes a few clicks and the ability to remember a password to participate on an erg (your own or one at a fitness club). Log on to www.concept2.com today and start logging your meters! ERC HISTORY SOUGHT Great Lakes Steel and the historian for the City of Ecorse are requesting information on the history of the Ecorse Rowing Club. Please contact Mary Ann MacLaren if you would like to help or if you have some club history (stories, articles, photos, etc.) to share. Mary Ann may be contacted at maryann@maclareninc.com or by phone at (734) 306-3991. ERC MEMBERS SPREAD WARMTH ERC members donated items to the Friend s of the Ecorse Library for their annual holiday party. Clothing items such as hats, mittens, gloves, scarves, and socks were distributed to children and adults in the community 2005 2006 Officers President Vice President Secretary Treasurer Lisa Redick Bob Jarosz Paula Labadie Chris Nestor Board of Directors 3 year terms Term Expires Members 2008 Phil Bozenski, Julia Garris, Beth Kusisto, Rodney Tank 2007 Carol Gaffke*, Mary Ann MacLaren (replacing Paula Labadie), Bob Powell, Ann VanBoxell, 2006 Elsa Jarosz, Tim Cardanha*, Jeff Gilliland, Rod Lively (replacing Chris Nestor) *Seats to be filled at a later date. GREAT LAKES STEEL DONATIONS Great Lakes Steel made a generous donation for the ERC Ecorse High School Rowing program of $250. The money will be used to purchase shorts for the high school crew. Great Lakes has also provided indoor storage for ERC s 8s for the winter season. Last year s winter weather took a toll on equipment, which was stored outside in the elements. The generosity of the mill will enable ERC to preserve the equipment for programs such as our high school program. EHS INDOOR ROWING For the first time ever, students at Ecorse High School are participating in an after-school indoor rowing program. In November, Mary Ann MacLaren and Chris Nestor moved ERC s eight ergs to EHS. Stan Childress, EHS principal helped unload the ergs and coordinate the high school indoor rowing program. Mary Ann and Chris are also volunteering their time to teach EHS students how to erg. A room has been set up at the high school for the program. The coaches plan to display a log chart and rowing posters. If anyone has rowing or motivational posters to donate, contact Mary Ann MacLaren at maryann@maclareninc.com or by phone at (734) 306-3991. Plans are being made for the students to participate at the Detroit Boat Club s Motown Madness Indoor Rowing Regatta at the Winter Garden in the GM Headquarters building on February 25. Volunteer drivers are needed; contact Mary Ann MacLaren. ERC members are encouraged to come cheer on the crew wear your yellow shirts! ERG ORDERS Would you like to row year round? How about purchasing a Concept2 erg of your own? The regular price of $850 will be discounted to $800; in addition, there will be a savings on the shipping costs. Ecorse Rowing Club-2006

The purpose of the document is to explain and clarify the rules of rowing at the Ecorse Rowing Club. The goal is to insure an environment that secures the future of the club members and equipment. Article I. General Safety and Rowing Policies 1. Members failing to observe the rules and guidelines shall be subject to disciplinary action by the Rowing Committee and/or the Board of Directors. 2. The basic rules (e.g., U.S. Rowing Association criteria) of rowing safety and club conduct must be followed. 3. Unsportsmanlike conduct or conduct detrimental to the reputation of the Ecorse Rowing Club, abuse or irresponsible use of equipment, disrespect or disregard of other rowers, or obscene or belligerent language toward other rowers, rowing officials, or Club members will not be tolerated. Offenders shall be warned and continued misbehavior shall be subject to action by the Rowing Committee and/or Board of Directors. Continued offenses may result in loss of all Club privileges, and forfeiture of all fees paid. Disciplinary action by the Board may be taken in addition to any action of the USRA. 4. When rowing, all rowers (including coxswain) must be logged in and out. This includes the use of private equipment as well as Club equipment. 5. Sign-up sheets are available for practice with priority given to the first one signed up (paid-up rowers only). 5.1. Club boat reservations are for 90 minutes. 5.1.1. A program description for a proposed group use of equipment for an extended time should be presented to the Rowing Committee for approval. Approval of the proposal will be required before starting the proposed program. 5.2. If reserved boats are not in use within 15 minutes of the reserved times, then the boat becomes available to others. 5.3. If a boat leaves late, it still must be returned within 90 minutes of the original signed-up time. 5.4. Please observe the rowing "lanes" up and downstream (described in Section 2 Water Safety Policies). 6. Rowers and coaches will be attentive to, and obey the safety rules and guidelines provided by USRA and posted in the boathouse. Site and season specific rules may also be posted. 7. Club equipment is available to all paid-up rowers on an equal basis regardless of any private equipment owned. 8. All club equipment must be cleaned after use, and any equipment damage must be recorded in the logbook and reported to the Chairperson of the Rowing Committee, Coach, or Club President immediately after the incident. 8.1. It is the duty of the Rowing Chair and Coach to review the logbook for damage reports and to schedule repairs. 8.2. Members are strongly encouraged to resolve any conflicts over equipment use among themselves, realizing that additional crews have the right to the equipment also. The following rules are to be used when conflicts cannot be resolved: 9.3.1. Sign-up sheets for equipment shall be made available for each regatta. Reservation of equipment can be made up to six months in advance and up to one week prior to the event.

For conflicts within the same event, priority shall be determined by a coin toss, except in the case of national and regional championships. For these regattas, the fastest crew gets its choice of equipment. 9.3.6. For conflicts between separate events, the Rowing Chair shall decide the priority, considering any consequences the decision may have on club points, etc. 9.3.7. For conflicts that cannot be resolved by the above rules, the Chairperson of the Rowing Committee, Head Coach, or Club President is to decide on the priorities. 9.4. Individuals or crews using equipment in this regard are responsible for the rigging and de-rigging, transportation, loading, unloading and re-rigging of the equipment they intend to use. 9.5.
