COMMODORE S COMMENTS We closed out February with a great evening of food and conversation at Steve and Gloria Jaffess beautiful home in Del Webb s Spruce Creek. Peppered steak and an assortment of other goodies! Yummy! Thanks to you both for being such gracious hosts. It was a wonderful meeting place. One interesting part of the meeting was the discovery of a couple of old silver trophy platters and small silver cups from the 1983 Big Sun Challenge that Mark Ciraco found in a box in his attic and brought to the meeting. Along with other trophies and mugs from days past he handed these over to Art to put with other memorabilia from the club. Hopefully we will be able to use some of these in future events that we have. Thanks Mark. So now we are in to March and the racing season starts in full force for the dedicated few in our club. Most every weekend this month has an event scheduled that they can attend. I know Ed and Paul are heading to Sanford for the Trans- Monroe on the 2 nd, then racing weekends in Palatka and Crescent City follow. And, of course, the weekly schedule at Lake Eustis continues as well for our scow sailors. We are getting closer to hosting our own Regatta in April so be prepared to jump in and help as needed. Bob has all the pre-race preparations working smoothly and in full force. Sponsorships have been solicited and lined up, Art is ordering the T-shirts this week, the Patti- Jan-Sandra cooking trio is gearing up, and oh yes, the Jamaicans. They are coming back to defend their victories in the 2011 and 2012 Harpoon Nationals! That is great news! All in all it is adding up to be another great event in the history of this regatta. We don t know about a Spring Series yet but will keep you posted. It may end up being just a one day practice session with starts, etc. Something we all need indeed. We will continue to have the Sunday Sailing at The Point on the third Sunday of each month so as the weather improves come out for a little Sunday afternoon sail with other club members on beautiful Lake Weir. In closing I want to give kudos to Tom and Lynn Barrett for jumping in and volunteering to host the March general membership meeting on the 21st on short notice. Art and Mai had volunteered for this date but as scheduling conflicts started appearing on the horizon they very smartly asked to be excused with plenty of time to find another host. So thank you again Tom and Lynn. Have a great month all! See you on the water...!!!! Your Commodore, John Hult Aboard the Mayor OCALA SAILING CLUB, PO BOX 2191, OCALA, FL 34478! PAGE 2

TREASURER S REPORT February is the shortest month in the calendar and in the blink of an eye, March is suddenly before us. Even our Sunday-Lemon-Point-Sail literally blew right passed us. On our recent Thursday member's dinner meeting I even almost forgot to have our traditional raffle until Kathy Olbekson reminded me that she had $5 burning a hole in her pocket. We rustled together the tickets in a flash and raised $45. The big winner was Larry Moore who's heart is bigger than his luck and he made a generous donation of $40 after we insisted that he at least take back his investment of $5. Thank you, Larry! The raffle is fun and next month we are going to add a second winning prize at no extra cost. We encourage you to keep your winnings as we don't want you to lose your incentive to participate in the fun. Ironically, we had a $45 bill the same night for our Regatta trophy bases. So, like salty sailors we are keeping a good balance due to fair winds and good ballast. The wooden bases will be a handsome compliment to the stained glass trophies tailored after our OSC Logo. That brings up the Regatta which is looming toward us in the month of April. Bob Cole has things under control and the costs are being well managed and following budget. Due to unprinted T-Shirts from last year, we are arranging for this years printing which will happen in March at a cost of about $250. We still have an inventory of OSC Caps so we will be in good shape on the merchandise front. Our current account balance is $ 2,291.77. Respectfully submitted,! Art Twitchell - Treasurer Sunday Sailing at The Point HAPPY BIRTHDAY! LOU ARCHIBALD MARCH 8 GRACE MORING MARCH 10 Meet by boat at Lemon Point on Lake Weir every 3rd Sunday of the month at 1:00 PM for an a$ernoon of sailing and fun! OSC MEETING MINUTES - FEBRUARY 21, 2013 Location: Steve and Gloria Jaffess Home ~ Summerfield Meeting was called to order by Commodore, John Hult. John thanked our hosts, Steve and Gloria Jaffess, for inviting us into their home this evening! The winner of the 50/50 Raffle was Larry Moore. Congratulations Larry! Larry graciously donated his winnings back to the club. Bob Cole gave an update about our upcoming Harpoon Nationals and Lake Weir Invitational Regatta on April 19-21, 2013. Rock Schumacher arranged for the wooden trophy bases to be made and the stained glass trophies are on order. Skip Archibald has volunteered his pontoon boat for the Regatta Committee Boat. There will be a clean-up day scheduled between April 1 and April 9 to clean up the pontoon boat and ready it for the Regatta. There may not be time for a Spring Series of Races this year due to such a busy Spring Regatta schedule. We may try to schedule just one day of practice races prior to our Regatta in April. Art Twitchell has been working on the Regatta t-shirt artwork and layout. We will be using the left-over unprinted t-shirts from last year. Art showed a sample of how the t-shirts will look. The OSC Logo will be printed with three colors on the front and all of the Sponsorship Logo's will be printed on the back. The 2013 Sponsors are: First World Imports Walkerswood Caribbean Dreams Ameriprise Financial Sail Care TM Central Technologies Art Twitchell received a call from Jeanette Lewis with Marion County Parks and Recreation. Jeanette will be holding a FireWise Nature Camp for children this summer and has asked if our club could provide any volunteers to give a sailing demonstration. Tom Barrett asked if they might be interested in a sailing demonstration using remote controlled sailboats. Art Twitchell suggested we invite Jeanette to one of our upcoming meetings to describe the program. Jan Schumacher will include the information received about the camp in the March Newsletter. Art Twitchell presented the Treasurer's Report. Our current balance is $2,291.77. Ed Sims discussed the busy upcoming Spring Regatta schedule. Three other Central Florida Sailing Clubs will be hosting Regatta's in March and the OSC Regatta will be in April. The Clemens Cup on Lake Harris has been rescheduled from March to October. Mark Ciraco found some old OSC trophies stored in his attic that were never used. Art Twitchell will add them to our inventory. We may be able to re-use some of the trophies at future events. The March Buccaneer Night will be held at Pasta Faire in Belleview on March 7, 2013 at 6:30 PM. We are in need of a host for the March OSC Meeting on March 21, 2013. Art and Mai Twitchell had signed up to host but now have a conflict that evening. Jan Schumacher will send an e-mail to the membership requesting a replacement volunteer host for March. Art and Mai have offered to host the week before, on March 14, if a replacement host is not found. The OSC Meeting was adjourned and the OBRS Meeting began. Art Twitchell suggested that we reduce the cost of the remaining OBRS Flags that we have in inventory or use them as future raffle giveaways.! Respectfully Submitted, Jan Schumacher Secretary OCALA SAILING CLUB, PO BOX 2191, OCALA, FL 34478! PAGE 4

Sailing Demonstration Volunteers Needed! Marion County Parks and Recreation FireWise Nature Camp Jeanette Lewis runs the FireWise Nature Camp each summer. She is asking if anyone in our club would be interested in teaching some basics of sailing and giving a sailing demonstration to her camp children this summer. The target week would be July 22-26, 2013 with field trips on Tuesday, July 23rd or Thursday, July 25th. The demonstration could be held at Carney Island. This summer she wants the children to see how wind can effect fire. The weeks theme will be directed towards weather and gale force versus tsunami. She will plan to teach how wind affects fire as a very fierce force, causing the fire to move, and how wind and water affect a sailboat to move it along. She likes to use different concepts along with hands on experience to help the ideas stick; as well as be fun for the children. With this the children will also learn the physical and mental attributes one needs if becoming a firefighter. Simple yet griping to a young child to experience something like sailing and have it relate to fire. This creates quite an impact on the children. Most will never get to have an experience like sailing. The sailing demonstration can be simple with one small sailboat to teach the basics as to raising the sail, port, bow, rigging, stern, lowering the sail, looking out for the boom, and actually getting on the water and sailing. A demonstration using motorized remote controlled sailboats would also be a desirable alternative. The camp goes for 9 weeks. The sailing portion would only have to be for a day unless the volunteer would like to extend it. The ages of the children are from 6 to 12 years. Most of the children have been attending the camp for three years and love the outdoors. The children really benefit from all of the challenges provided during the week s activities; even the young ones. Rock climbing, rappelling, caving, hiking, and swimming are just some of the activities planned. If interested in volunteering please contact: Jeanette Lewis Recreation Leader 2 Marion County Parks and Recreation 111 SE 25 Avenue Ocala, Fl. 34471 352-671-8560 Jeanette.Lewis@marioncountyfl.org OCALA SAILING CLUB, PO BOX 2191, OCALA, FL 34478!
