CATALINA 25 NATIONAL REGATTA The Catalina 25 National Regatta was held along with the Catalina 250, Capri 25 and Catalina 30 Nationals September 24th through 26th in San Diego, California. The National Regatta started Friday at noon with two races in San Diego Bay adjacent to Shelter Island. On Saturday the fleet raced two more races about 3 miles off Point Loma in the ocean. The final race was held Sunday along the San Diego city front. The weather was clear and sunny, with light and variable to moderate wind all three days. Folsom Lake Yacht Club sailor, Scott Hefty, and crew Pat McIntosh and Phil McCaleb sailed Hefty s Catalina 25 Ho O Kolohe, to three consecutive first place finishes and two seconds to win their second Catalina 25 National Championship in as many years. In June 2009 they won the Catalina 25 Nationals held on San Francisco Bay. Local San Diego favorite Jim Baumgart, Indiscipline, was second and Joe Wergers from Oceanside sailed Utopia to third. The Silver Gate Yacht Club and the San Diego Catalina Association hosted the event and rolled out the red carpet to all. Cleve Hardaker, chairman, and Jim Baumgart, cochair, along with their committee put on a first class event. Frank Butler, founder and owner of Catalina Yachts and his Vice President Sharon Day attended all shore side events. Ho O Kolohe and crew finishing first Catalina 25 Nationals, San Diego. [So there's 3 serious racers in Fleet 4. (editor)] Frank Butler, President and CEO and Sharon Day Vice President of Catalina Yachts present Catalina 25 National Championship Trophy to Scott Hefty at Silver Gate Yacht Club in San Diego.

CAPTAIN S REPORT What do aviators and sailors have in common besides wind under our wings? We like to eat and we like to party? This year s party was at restaurant named the AVIATOR and 30 Catalina 22 Fleet Four members celebrated the year s accomplishment and rewarded themselves with some trophies and some great chow. There was more than the dinner and awards thanks to Ron & Carolyn Hitchcock opening up there business, EXECUTIVE AUTOPILOTS for some crawling around, and into a variety of aircraft undergoing upgrades or repair of their instrumentation packages; several getting new glass cockpits or LCD displays vs. the old style gauges & dials. It was a real treat, hey there was even a Catalina 22 in the hanger with a modified mast stepping system similar to the Hunter system I believe. If you re a cruiser go for it-but it s not race legal. By now you have probably seen some of the pictures that Larry Charlot has Emailed out to the fleet members. Larry took some of the detail out of the pictures and it was still just over 40 mega-bytes, so if you have dial-up fagetaboutit. When it only takes 57 seconds to load it (fiberoptic), it s worth the wait. Check out the photo of the float plane-it s classified as an amateur built aircraft with some store bought floats added. Back to the parties-carolyn and Ron and Madeline served up a great wine & cheese layout at the Executive that started informally around 5:00 and by 6:30 it was time to move to the other end of the runway to the Aviator Restaurant for the formal part of the evening. This year s Awards Banquet /meeting started with a review of the year s accomplishments, including National Recognition for fleet members Dave Strain and Jo Anne Watkins for their contributions the fleet. Following dinner Cruise Director Larry Charlot started the awards with special plaques rewarding those who participated in the Cruise of the year to the San Juan Islands, up in the Puget Sound area. Most boats were trailered 1,800 miles round trip. That s dedication and thorough planning for 6 boats. After the unofficial awards were distributed the first trophies were awarded for cruise participation; 6th place went to Rich & Nancy Platt, 5th to Ken & Sharon Twomey, 4th to Ron & Carolyn Hitchcock, 3rd to Kevin Morton, 2nd to Larry Charlot and first place to Roy Moore. The best Cruise of the year award was split between Larry Charlot and Ken Twomey for the San Juan Cruise. On the Racing front Dave Strain took 2nd in C22 racing and I received the first place and the perpetual. For the Cruiser Racing Champ the winner was Scott Hefty and a new perpetual trophy. Scott was also awarded the Special Achievement award for winning the C25 nationals for the second time in two years. The major awards started first with the Cliff Stukalo award presented to Karen & Gary Preston for continued support for the very successful Big s & Little s event for the last 4 or 5 years or more. Secretary /Editor, Roy Moore was awarded the C-22 Boat of the Year for the second consecutive year. And Larry Charlot was given a special award for his contributions to the fleet over the last decade. While I m mentioning Larry Charlot, I should point out that Larry has taken a

break from fleet service and has been replaced as Cruise Chairman by Kevin Morton. All of the other fleet officers/board members will remain in their positions. A special thanks to all the board members for their support thru out the year. Thank them when you see them. Spaced through the meeting was the Annual Raffle with some very nice contributions from fleet members and especially some Catalina items from the CATALINA DIRECT owner Lowell Richardson. Thank Lowell by doing business with him. Kudos, to Madeline Rayfuse and Carolyn Hitchcock for organizing the 2010 Annual Banquet. The food and the venues made for a very enjoyable evening. Thanks also to Chick and his Wife for the service and support at the restaurant. This will probably be next year s venue. Hope everyone enjoys the upcoming holidays-the board will be having a transition meeting early next year, date TBD and our first general meeting of the New Year will be on the 2nd Thursday of January, on the 9th. That s 7:00PM, 1.9.11, at the Fair Oaks Library. That s a wrap for 2010 Captain Michael C-22 Sirius CATALINA 22 RACING NEWS: or FUN IN THE SUN Lanette and I will be joining Peggy Newell and John Moritsun for a bare-boat cruise in the BVIs, so there will be no racing news till we return. Dave ANNUAL BANQUET SEE HOW MUCH FUN WE HAD Illustration 1: Rich & Nancy Platt digging in to the chow while Gary Preston ponders carrying 2 plates. Illustration 2: Carolyn & Ron Hitchcock receive special cruise participation award.

Illustration 3: Chris & Robyn Parker receive special cruise participation award. FLEET WEEK CRUISE REPORT Illustration 4: Carolyn & Ron Hitchcock receive 3rd place cruising points award. The Fleet Week Cruise thrilled the attendees once again. After an overnight at Richmond City Marina, Perseverando, carrying cruise leader Kevin Morton and crew Suzanne and (her daughter) Kate and Allegro carrying Roy Moore and brother-in-law Ted Myers set out for the waters near Alcatraz Island for the Navy show. We were too late for the parade of ships, but the festival that was the air show dispelled any disappointment concerning the parade. Allegro did it's best at aerobatic performance enroute. Crossing the wake of a passing ferry, Allegro drove onto the wave, lifting bow skyward, then dropped into the trough with an resounding kerwomp. No harm,--all part of the fun. From the host of boats, one might think that everyone in the Bay Area was afloat. Though the claim that one could walk from Crissie Field to Alcatraz from deck to deck exaggerates a lot (fortunately for the skippers), the horizon was completely blocked toward the Golden Gate. Roy found and hailed both the Lady Washington and the Hawaiian Chieftain, but couldn't find old shipmates among the current crews. Illustration 5: Larry Charlot receives 2nd place cruising points fleet award vs. special awards Larry made. The Navy put on an awesome show with very slow flight, afterburner thunder, loop,

rolls, very low flight, and formations. They wow'ed us all with their precision, noise and spectacle. MONEY MATTERS TREASURER'S REPORT As the 3rd quarter comes to an end you can see that the fleet is in good financial condition and should finish the last quarter fairly close to budgeted. Elections were last week and I am honored that you have selected me to be the Fleet Treasurer for another year. End of 3rd Quarter 2010 Income Expenses $979.00 466.01 Balance $512.99 Bank Balance $3487.18 Catalina 22 Fleet 4-2010 Cruises & Meetings Calendar NOVEMBER 6: Annual Awards Banquet 6:30 p.m. Location: The Aviator restaurant Pre-banquet party Hitchcock's hangar 5 p.m. 26-28: Thanksgiving Cruise to San Francisco Bay. He writes, "some things you do not forget." Please keep Neal's info at hand and if you have any suggestions on boats he can crew upon, he's ready and willing to come aboard.
