Steelhead counts have gone up for fish moving through the Columbia River. Tuesday, 13 th @ 7:00 pm, Chehalem Senior Center - 101 W. Foothills Drive. Newberg, Oregon 97132 Short tech tip by Bob Askey Bob will do a quick tech tip at the meeting. Will show convert Pro-Troll to Break Away Finally got to use the Pro-Troll Flashers, the ones that do a 360 rotation. Have heard a lot about them for fall Chinook below Bonneville Dam last year. Watched a lot of videos on YouTube. Attended seminar while at the Outdoor GPS Day in the Park in July. Guy did an excellent job talking about Pro-Trolls. We also fished with Derek Clare of Get Reel Guide Service a week before staying at KOA. We hooked three fish that day with one keeper. I tried the Pro-Troll with a Anchovy. Looked really good but no takes. Didn t try the 3.5 VIP Spinners Pro Escobedo designed. We were camped at KOA August 14 and left 19. We fish five days on the Columbia River out of Warrenton. First two days we used Herring or Anchovy. Finally hooked a small Chinook on a VIP spinner I bought off of Pro Escobedo while he was a guest speaker in May. Third day seemed a repeat of the first two. Cody Herman of Day One Outdoors was doing reports everyday. He talked about a bite above the bridge on the Oregon side by the anchored ships. We ended up in that area. I got caught on something and had to break off my gear. So I decided to put on a chrome Pro-Troll and one of the 3.5 VIP Spinners. The one named Bronco copper Colorado blade half red with blue dot on the face of the blade. Not even five minutes in the water hooked a nice Chinook that ripped line out clear down to my backing. We finally got it to the boat. I put the same setup on all the rods except one I used a green Pro-Troll. We got our four Chinook, one each. Arlene got the smallest one that was probably around 28. We did this the next two days and continued to hook Chinook. We did notice that all of our action was right at high tide and then outgoing tide. Also we noticed we continued to hook fish but our hookup to land ratio really got bad. Tried everything tighten drag, speed up kicker when a fish is hooked, keep the boat in gear. Nothing seemed to do any good. Hooked six one day only landing two. Went back with our grand daughter and her boyfriend hooked twelve but only two made it to the boat. I converted just about all my spinners I made plus some of the VIP to a Mustad Open Eye Siwash with a small size 5 roller swivel. Arlene and I went back and hooked three Chinook and landed all of them. Not the best test but I felt really good about the success. I also converted all my Pro-Trolls to Break Away. The flasher is released from the end and slides up the leader to the main line. The fish isn t fighting the flasher. Which I have heard a lot of complaints about loosing fish because the flasher continues the 360 rotation. Here is a link to what I viewed. Note Don t Cut Anything - just remove the Duo Lock on the rear of the flasher so can put it back if needed. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yasaqqkw_5c Since starting to use this setup August 16 8/16(4 for 4), 8/17 (2 for 3), 8/18 (2 for 6) and 8/26 (2 for 12), plus September 9 9/9(3 for 3). We lost a lot of fish but figure with the single hook hopefully that changes. That s 28 salmon actually hooked. All on this same setup. Size 3.5 and 4.0 spinners. The VIP Spinners and spinners I put together Red and White and Blue Tip Rainbow. All got bites. Looking for Nitrile Gloves for fishing? Some people wear them because their hands can t deal with the chemicals of brines and cures. Wearing gloves also keeps your own scent from mixing on bait and lures. Bi-Mart has them in the automotive department. Good price too. Have only seen these two sizes.
