The rest of the season was unkind to the Oilers however as they ended the year on only two more wins and 13 losses. Once again Findlay proved they could beat some of the better teams in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) as they defeated Michigan Technological University 92-77 and Ferris State University 80-77 in Croy Gymnasium. The Huskies ended the season by taking the conference championship with a 23-8 record while the Bulldogs wrapped up the year with a 17-12 mark. Consistency is what head coach Kate Cummings will be looking for this season as the Oilers embark on the 2008-09 campaign with a young roster full of talented players. The group will be led by junior guard Audra Mihalic who returns after averaging 10.5 points, 3.3 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 1.4 steals per game last year from the point position.

During their most-recent visit in 2004-05, the Lakers defeated Slippery Rock, 71-62, and lost to North Dakota State, 89-80. In 2000-01 they finished 1-2, losing to Bentley (80-60) and Presbyterian (92-80), and beating Philadelphia (93-72). LSSU s top returnees are senior center Jackie Armstrong, who was the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Rookie of the Year in 2006. She led the Lakers in scoring last season, averaging 12.6 points per game, and needs 112 points to reach the 1,000-point milestone. Armstrong and fellow senior center Alyssa VanderWal shot an impressive 52.8 percent from the field in 2007-08. VanderWal shot a GLIAC-leading 66.9 percent from the field (79-118) and led the league in average blocked shots per game (2.12) last season. She averaged 7.8 points and a team-leading 6.2 rebounds per game. Sophomore point guard Ronlea Peterson and sophomore forward Jill Walton return to LSSU s lineup after missing the 2007-08 season due to injuries. Peterson averaged 6.5 points and 3.8 rebounds per game, and finished second on the team in steals and assists as a rookie starter. Walton appeared in 26 of 27 games during her first season, averaging 2.6 points and 1.7 rebounds per game. Sophomore Emily Joseph, who stepped in for injured point guard Ronlea Peterson last season, was ranked seventh in the GLIAC in free-throw percentage at.814 and seventh in three-point field-goal percentage at.382 in 2007-08. Armstrong and VanderWal are two-time GLIAC All-Academic Team selections and their GPAs rank sixth and seventh, respectively, among the top 10 student-athletes at LSSU. LSSU expects to contend for the GLIAC North Division title after finishing 8-10 in the league last season. The 2008-09 squad returns its top trio of scorers from last season in Katie Wysocky (16.1 points per game), Danae Danen (11.1) and Katie Zimmerman (10.5), and reunites them with 2006-07 most valuable player Sarah Stream, who sat out last year with injury. Add a stellar supporting cast, which includes four other players who have scored at least 18 points in a game, and the Huskies are reloaded and ready to pursue some lofty goals. Wysocky, a 6-0 forward, is an All-America candidate after tallying 500 points and a school-record 301 rebounds as a sophomore in 2007-08. She runs the floor exceptionally well and can score from anywhere on the on the floor. Danen, a 6-0 center, has solid post moves and a great midrange jump shot. Katie Zimmerman has developed into one of the most potent 3-point shooters in the GLIAC and will try to best her school-record total of 78 triples from a season ago. Stream led the team in scoring and assists in 2006-07 and was a preseason All-GLIAC pick a year ago before a seasonending injury. The teams only two seniors are 5-11 forward Alicia Schneider and 5-7 guard Maria Kasza. Schneider has a GLIAC All-Defensive Team selection to her credit. Kasza is a 3-point specialist with 157 made triples as collegiate player. Tech is ranked as high as No. 7 in the nation in preseason polls under sixth-year head coach John Barnes. It s the highest ranking for the Huskies since a spot at No. 4 during the 1999-2000 season. Barnes owns a career record of 98-45 (.685 winning percentage). 2008-09 Season Previe view A year removed from one of the most trying seasons in Tiffin women s basketball history as they entered the ranks of division II competition, the 2007-08 Dragons finished with a 12-15 record. Despite the challenges, what was once a young and inexperienced team has evolved into a knowledgeable and motivated squad looking to raise the bar and make Tiffin a top competitor in the GLIAC. Lacking seniors, the 2007-08 Dragons went through their ups and downs. Over the first half of the season, Tiffin earned victories over tough regional foes Southern Indiana and West Liberty, while also defeating Gannon and GLIAC rival Findlay by double-digits. The Dragons were 5-10 against GLIAC opponents, in which 5 of those losses were by a margin of 6 points or less. The Dragons return 8 letterwinners from last season, including its starting five. Highlighting the list of returners is 2007 All-ICAA selections, Megan Fletcher, Leanne Lucius, and Kylene Spiegel. Fellow seniors Megan Jesulaitis and Fallon Sanborn help to give stability on the perimeter for Tiffin. While junior center Alexis Karel anchors the post and sophomores Holly Focke and Samantha McCall provide a year of knowledge and consistency to the Dragon squad. A strength for Pam Oswald s team a year ago, guard play is expected to again play a vital part in the success of the 2008-09 Dragons. Tiffin returns a solid core of guards led by two of its top three scorers from a year ago, Megan Fletcher and Kylene Spiegel. Heading into her senior season, Fletcher has improved every facet of her game and her arsenal of moves on the offensive end makes her a tough match-up for opponents. As a junior, Fletcher averaged 13.3 points per game, while reaching double-digits on eighteen different occasions. While Fletcher s leadership and skill set are crucial, Oswald s team returns a point guard that has had the responsibility to distribute and score with the basketball. In three seasons as Tiffin s floor general, senior point guard Kylene Spiegel has used her leadership and athletic ability to become a tough-nosed point guard for the Dragon program. Spiegel made those around her better as a distributor and a scorer last season by averaging 11.6ppg, ranking third on the team, and dishing out 143 assists(5.2 apg). Another senior who gives a boost from the off-guard spot is Fallon Sanborn. Sanborn played in all 27 games with 27 starts last season averaging 7.8 ppg. Senior Megan Jesulaitis, known to many as the three-point bomber, averaged 5 ppg and shot 35 percent from behind the 3-point arc. A sophomore that provides versatility to the Dragons backcourt is Holly Focke. Arguably Tiffin s most improved player from a year ago, Focke is able to play anywhere from the one through four spot with confidence. With one year under her belt, Samantha McCall, is working to become a more essential piece of the puzzle. Tiffin s backcourt will also benefit with the addition of three young guards, Mandy Jaeb, Jennifer Johnston and Andrea Gifford, whose energy and work ethic will push the upperclassmen. This year Tiffin has a group of talented players that have skills with their backs to the basket and facing the basket, providing a diverse attack from the post. Coming off a season where Tiffin s top scorers all hailed from the backcourt, the emergence of several individuals over the off-season could bode well for Tiffin s success down the road. The lone senior in the frontcourt is forward Leanne Lucius. Turning in a solid junior campaign starting all 27 games and averaging 13.2 ppg and 8.2 rpg. One of five seniors, Lucius has shown a sense of urgency, not only by her actions, but by becoming more of a vocal leader. Returning to the center position is junior Alexis Karel who averaged 8.1 ppg and 4.9 rpg. Karel has made strides over the past year and is better equipped both physically and experience-wise to handle the rigors of the upcoming season. Emerging onto the scene are junior Katrina Clark and freshman Jessica Harris and Megan Snyder. Despite being new to the program, all three have shown an enthusiasm to learn Oswald s system in the post and has proven to be a force on the boards.

2007-08 Wayne State Women s Basketball Prospectus The 2008-09 Wayne State University women s basketball squad hopes to improve on a strong finish last season and an appearance in the GLIAC semifinals for the first time since 2003. Head coach Gloria Bradley enters her ninth year at the helm of the Warrior basketball program with six returning letterwinners from last year s squad which won eight of nine contests from mid-january through mid-february then upset top-seeded Hillsdale on its home court in the first round of the GLIAC tournament. WSU returns its top four scorers from last year along with three of its top four rebounders from 2007-08. WSU will be led offensively by a trio of seniors in Chastidy Miller (White Lake, Mich./ Waterford Kettering), Jasmine McCall (Detroit, Mich./CMA) and Joy Nash (Muskegon, Mich.). Miller has scored 932 points in her first three years with the Green and Gold. Last year, she was second on the squad in both scoring (13.0) and rebounding (4.7). Chastidy is the toughest and most physical player on the team. Chaz is a multidimensional player that gladly assumed any role required last year. I am looking for Chaz to present senior leadership. When focused, she can be unstoppable. McCall earned First Team All-GLIAC South Division accolades in her first season at WSU. She led the conference in steals (101) and finished in the top 12 in the league in both scoring (14.4) and assists (3.44) per game. Although Jasmine led the team in scoring, she was also a defensive spark for the team. Jazz plays with passion and pushes her teammates to up the pressure. She will also be expected to be a leader this season. Nash has started all 67 games she has dressed and has scored in double figures 31 times. In addition to being named to the GLIAC South Division All-Defensive Team for the Warrior senior Chastidy Miller needs 68 points for 1,000 in her WSU career. second consecutive season, she was among the conference leaders in assists (3.93 per game), three-point field goal percentage (34.6), minutes played (32.67 per game) and assist-turnover ratio (1.56). Joy is our floor general. She takes care of the ball. Although Joy looks to pass first, she is a good scorer. The Warrior backcourt is further strengthened by junior Brooke Bowers (Delphos, Ohio/ Jefferson). She finished 10th in the GLIAC in three-pointers made per game (1.59) and 15th in steals (1.78 per game). Last year she made a school-record nine three-point shots in a January 26 win over Mercyhurst finishing with a careerhigh 35 points on 12-of-26 shooting (9-of-19 from beyond the arc). Known as a shooter, Brooke upped her defense last year. Teams keyed on her shot last season. She has worked hard to develop other aspects of her game. Sophomore Chelsea Kouri (Clarkston, Mich.) played in 24 of 27 contests as a rookie scoring 66 points. Chelsea is one of the hardest workers on the team. She takes her development seriously. I look for her to settle into her game this season. Two recruits (Stephanie Hoskin and Felicia Thomas) will add depth to the backcourt. Hoskin played at Martin Luther King High School in Detroit helped the Crusaders to the 2007 Class A state title. She was a Detroit Free Press Honorable Mention All-Detroit selection as a senior. Thomas is the niece of former Tartar Dawn Thomas. Felicia was voted the 2007-08 Southwest Michigan Athletic Conference Player of the Year after averaging 17 points, seven rebounds, four assists and four steals per game for Kalamazoo Central High School. Stephanie is very quiet and unassuming off the court. Stephanie s quickness and footwork will make her an asset in the backcourt. With her size, Felicia will have an instant impact on the backcourt. She has a great sense of pace and composure seldom seen in such a young player. Both forwards from last season (Nicole Rogers and Monique George) have graduated paving the way for a newcomer to make an impact. Syracuse transfer Brittany Smith (Milwaukee, Wis./Riverside) was able to practice with the team after her arrival in January. She started 13 games as a true freshman for the Orange in 2005-06 before a couple of injuries limited her playing time. Brittany will present a physical presence in the paint. She has strong but soft hands in the post with an instinct for rebounding. Freshman Karlisa Love (Detroit, Mich./ Crockett) earned Detroit Free Press Honorable Mention All-Detroit honors as a senior after averaging 11.5 points, 8.9 rebounds, two blocks Warrior senior Joy Nash has led WSU in assists the last two seasons. and 1.8 steals per game. She was also an MHSAA Scholar-Athlete. Karlisa adds quickness and rebounding to the front court. She plays well in the open court and will add depth at the guard/forward position. Junior Lindsey West (Royal Oak, Mich./ Kimball) returns at center after starting 15 times a year ago. She led WSU in field goal percentage, offensive rebounds (61) and blocked shots, while finishing fifth in the GLIAC in blocked shots per game (1.15) and 10th in offensive rebounds (2.35 per game) last season. Lindsey came on strong at the end of last season. She has gotten stronger and has a better feel for the league. I look for her to step up and be more aggressive in the paint. Freshman Quintell Foster (Detroit, Mich./ Community High School) helped the Hurricanes to a 25-1 record and the 2008 Class B state championship game. Quintell has good moves in the post. As she becomes comfortable with the college pace, she will add depth to the front court. With the change in GLIAC scheduling from 17 to 22 games (double round-robin), the Warriors have five non-league contests starting with a November 20 game at Northern Kentucky. The Norse welcome back three starters from its NCAA Division II national championship team that compiled a 28-8 mark last season. A trip to Madonna precedes a road game at Edinboro in November. After five league games, WSU concludes 2008 with an in-region game at Southern Indiana on December 29 before hosting Edinboro on December 31. All 17 games in 2009 will be GLIAC league contests.
