SWIM CLASS DESCRIPTIONS PARENT/CHILD CLASSES SHRIMP KIPPER (ages 6-12 months) A love-filled water adjustment class for children ages 6-12 months. Basic swimming skills are introduced through games and songs, along with the usage of toys. Child must be accompanied by a caregiver in the water. SILLY SEALS (ages 1-2) A water adjustment class for 1-2 year olds. Parents will be guided through the basic swimming skills (kicking, floating, and paddling) to help their child gain independence. Child must be accompanied by a caregiver in the water. PIKE WITH PARENT (ages 2-5) A water adjustment class for the child not quite ready for instruction or separation from the caregiver. The class will focus on following directions, basic swimming skills (kicking, floating and paddling) and swimming independently with flotation. Child must be accompanied by a caregiver in the water. BEGINNER SWIM LEVELS PIKE (ages 3-5) A perfect swim class without a caregiver. The following skills will be introduced in a gentle, caring and fun way: front & back float, swimming on front & back. A flotation device is used for the majority of the class. POLLIWOG (ages 6-12) A beginner class for those children not comfortable swimming in the deep end and/or immersing their face in water. Goals: floating, paddle stroke/crawl stroke, elementary backstroke, swimming in the deep end. Flotation devices are worn for a good portion of the class. INTERMEDIATE LEVELS EELS (ages 3-7) Prerequisite: Swim 15 feet on front & back without flotation and comfortable putting face into the water. Goals: paddle stroke with rhythmic breathing, swimming on back, beginning over-arm recovery (crawl stroke/freestyle) RAYS: (ages 4-7) Prerequisite: Swim 15 feet crawl stroke/freestyle with rhythmic breathing, 15 feet elementary backstroke and sitting dives. STARFISH (ages 5-8) Prerequisite: Swim 20 feet freestyle with rotary breathing, 20 feet backstroke, minimal knowledge of breaststroke, and surface dive. Goals: concentrating on proper technique of all strokes including freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and focusing on endurance. INTERMEDIATE LEVELS GUPPY (ages 6-14) Prerequisite: Swim 40 feet crawl stroke/freestyle rhythmic/rotary breathing, 40 feet elementary backstroke, minimal knowledge of backstroke. Goals: freestyle with rotary breathing, backstroke, introduction to breaststroke, surface dive and endurance. MINNOW (ages 6-14) Prerequisite: Must be able to swim 50 meters (two pool lengths) continuously freestyle with rotary breathing and backstroke. Also, minimal knowledge of breaststroke. Goals: concentrating on proper technique of freestyle and backstroke with an emphasis placed on breaststroke and the glide; endurance; standing dives into freestyle. FISH (ages 6-14) Prerequisite: Must be able to swim 75 meters (three pool lengths) continuously freestyle with rotary breathing, backstroke and breaststroke with glide. Goals: concentrating on proper technique of freestyle, backstroke and breaststroke introduction to butterfly; endurance; standing dives into freestyle and breaststroke. ADVANCED SWIM LESSONS FLYING FISH (ages 8-14) Prerequisite: Must be able to swim 150 meters (6 pool lengths) continuously freestyle, backstroke and breaststroke; 15 meters butterfly. Goals: concentrating on proper technique of freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly; endurance; introducing freestyle/breaststroke flip turns. SHARK (ages 8-14) Prerequisite: Must be able to swim 300 meters (12 pool lengths) continuously freestyle (using flip turns), backstroke (using flip turns) and breaststroke; 25 meters butterfly. Goals: concentrating on proper technique of freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly. Continued work on competitive starts, turns and pullouts and build endurance. PORPOISE (ages 12-14) Prerequisite: Must have completed the Shark level. Goals: concentrating on proper technique of freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly. Continued stroke work and endurance. Become familiar with our preschool aquatic program; given a volunteer assignment to assist a swim class. ADULT SWIM LESSONS (ages 15 & older) Adults learn the fundamentals of swimming and are introduced to the water in a safe & comfortable environment. As you progress to the next level, technique and endurance are focused upon. Lessons are tailored to fit each individuals needs. BEGINNER: Learn to feel comfortable in the water. Skills introduced include front float, front paddle stroke, back float, treading and elementary backstroke. INTERMEDIATE: This class introduces rotary breathing, over arm backstroke and elementary backstroke. SWIM FIT (ages 8-16) Prerequisite: Must have completed Flying Fish level or above. This program is for the teen looking to improve their swimming skills or just stay in shape. The focus will be on stroke technique, racing skills, endurance and fitness. Swimmers will be given the same instruction as our swim team to better prepare them for competition in the future. This class is on Tuesdays, Wednesdays & Thursdays from 4:00-5:00 pm & Sundays 2:30-3:30 PM OPEN TO FULL & BASIC MEMBERS. IMPORTANT NOTES TO REMEMBER 1. During lessons, if you plan to leave the pool deck to work out (full members only) or sit in the lobby, please sign out with our deck supervisor to let them know where you will be. PARENTS WITH CHILDREN UNDER 12 YEARS OLD MUST REMAIN ON THE POOL DECK. 2. Children are NOT permitted in the Mens or Womens Locker Rooms. If you are bringing a child for swim lessons, you must use the Boys or Girls Locker Rooms. There are two family changing stalls available, one on the Main Pool Deck and one on the Warm Water Pool Deck. 3. Please be advised that all traffic to and from the Aquatic Center is through the locker rooms ONLY. Once you exit the locker room, please wait on the Main Pool Deck for your child s instructor. Instructors will place a flotation device on your child if necessary and will then escort them to the proper pool location. Parents MUST pick up children on the Main Pool Deck at the entrance of the Warm Water Pool at the end of their lesson. Parents MUST stay in the building during the length of their child s lesson (if under the age of 14). There is no observation on the Warm Water Pool Deck. Viewing through the Main Pool windows will be permitted during the first week of lessons. For the remainder of the session, parents/guardians MUST wait for their child on the Main Pool Deck bleachers. Thank you for your anticipated cooperation. 4. VINYL OR RUBBER PANTS ARE REQUIRED IN THE POOL for children wearing diapers. The rubber or vinyl diaper is work UNDER their swimsuit OVER their diaper. It is required by the Randolph Township Health Department. These pants MUST have elastic around the legs. Mandatory for both swim lessons & family swim. Without the vinyl or rubber pants, child will not be permitted to swim. Vinyl or rubber pants are available for purchase at the front desk for $4. 5. Swimmers with hair at shoulder length must have it tied back with a hair tie. If a swimmer has hair longer than shoulder length, it must be pulled up into a swim cap. (Swim caps are available for purchase at the front desk, $4) 6. Strollers are NOT permitted on the pool deck. 7. The Randolph YMCA is a glass free facility, inside & out. No glass of any kind is permitted on the YMCA premise. 8. Cell phones are NOT allowed in the locker rooms or on the pool deck. 9. Food & gum are prohibited on the pool deck. Water only. 10. FOR PARENT/CHILD CLASSES ONLY: If the parent is an Adult Member, a Basic Youth Membership is not needed for the child, but only the parent who is a member may bring the child to the class. The Full Member rate will be charged for the lesson fee. Y POLICIES NO makeups, credits, or refunds will be given for classes missed due to vacation, illness or personal reasons.
