The program can also be accessed on the IPAD environment through the use of PHOTON an application the enables Flash programs. Figure 1) Initial Screen: User can elect to 1) Watch a short video about the program 2) Enter the DAP in a computer environment 3) Enter the DAP in an IPAD environment 4) Go to the Dashboard Links Note: Use the menu navigation tools within a dashboard tool or the browser navigation tabs to flip between opened windows rather than the back arrows. Yellow cells indicate where users and enter input data.
Dairy analysis program (Computer or IPAD environment) Economic Summary Screen The first screen to appear after selection the DAP computer or IPAD environment is the economic executive summary screen (Figure 2). Figure 2) Economic Executive Summary Screen At the top right is the Economic Parameters Screen. These values drive the economic models in DAP and this is where the user can enter values of a specific herd or perform sensitivity analysis. Average ration cost per cow is calculated based on dry cow ration cost and marginal milk cost/lb of milk. The user should enter in the herd s dry cow ration cost and then increment the marginal milk cost/lb of milk until the ration cost (milk cows) reflects the herds current values. The economic executive summary window (lower half of Figure 2) gives an overview of findings for major factors affecting herd productivity and profitability. Milk yield/cow, pregnancy rate, age at first calving, somatic cell count and herd culling metrics are presented for the sample herd and contrasted to goal values. Percentile rankings of the parameters for the herd values and the goal values are estimated from the peer group distribution values (mean and STD). For example in Figure (2) the sample herd has a milk yield value of 74 lbs/cow per day while the selected peer group (All_PCdart_50-150 cow herds) has a value of 62.9. The herd value (higher than the peer group) is in the 81% percentile. In other words, 81% of the herds with 50-150 cows have milk yields less than the herd value while approximately 19% have values higher. Goal values can be changed by the user and the percentile ranking of the herd will be calculated. A goal value of 80 lbs is in the 91% of the peer group distribution.
The program calculates an economic value of the difference between the herd value for a parameter relative to the entered goal. In this example, changing the average milk yield/cow from 74 lbs/d to 80 lbs/day would result in an increase of income over feed cost of $236 dollars/cow/year. This value is based on the parameters entered in the Economic Parameters window, including milk price and marginal cost/marginal lb of milk (marginal milk cost). When these values are changed the values in the table are updated. Distribution of parameters On the left of the screen is the Peer group/ Parameters selection screen (Figure 3), with Parameters selected. The Parameter screen is organized into the broad categories of: General, Production, Udder Health, Genetics, Reproduction, Economic Links, General Links. These board categories can be seen by selecting the small triangle (encircled in red in Figure 3). When pressed the following screen (figure 4) will appear. Under each of the broad categories is a scroll bar that allows on to scroll through the list of related items. A complete listing of items is given in Appendix A.

As a given item parameter is selected (for example Preg-Rate-Current) a distribution of that parameter relative to the underlying peer group will be presented on the right of the screen. The distribution curve is divided into red and green parts with the change in color occurring at the herd value level. In the example the herd preg-rate-current value is 12%, with 58% of the peer herds above this value and 42% of the herds below. The color of the graphs will change depending on the item and desired directionality. For example, herds desire high pregnancy rate values are good (color coded green) while low value (red). In contrast, herds desire low SCC and hence the colors will be revered with low values being green (good) and high values being red (bad). The peer group used in the distribution is described in the title of the graph along with the number of herds in the peer group along with the mean and standard deviation of the group. The peer group can be changed by selecting the Peer Group option in the menu bar above the parameter screen (Figure 5). Figure 5) The peer group selection screen.
In the peer group selection screen the user can select different herd sizes to be used as the peer group. The peer group selected will have it s production parameters used in the generation of the distribution values. Enrolling and Tracking a Specific Herd A specific herd can be tracked, monitored and benchmarked over time. To subscribe a herd to the DAP system one must provide the Herd Code and RAC code along with a signed release form and send this to ldewald@vet.upenn.edu. Consultants must also send in their desired PASS KEY that will be used to access their specific herds. This along with an assigned Pass code will be used to access individual herd data (Figure 6). Figure (6) Pass Key and Pass Code (screen left) and herd menu pull-down (screen right) Upon entering your pass key and pass code and then pressing the Re- Fresh button, a pull down menu of herds will appear. The consultant can select the herd of interest and it s information will be loaded immediately. Printing In the lower right of the screen are the options to Reset, Print and Scenario (Figure 7) The reset will bring you back to the Home screen (Figure 1). Print option will send the current screen to a printer (or a pdf file). The scenario button is non-functional at this time. Dashboards A series of dashboard have been developed to facilitate the investigation of herd problems and to serve as instructional aides to complex problem. The Dashboards can be access from three points in the DAP program: 1) At the entry screen (Figure 1) by selecting the dashboard button
2) By selecting the DASHBOARDs for Workups button located under the Peer Group/Parameter screen. 3) By selecting the Other Links category in the Parameter Screen.
