Wildlife Troopers statewide came into Southcentral to assist in checking the fishing permits of thousands of fisherman hoping to catch the big one. AWT had 41 people involved in the effort, including troopers Patrol trucks, unmarked trucks, fixed wing aircraft, river boats and a helicopter were used by 14 Alaska Wildlife Troopers and Public Safety Technicians on a variety of patrols Some of the ticket receivers even pass on tips of where they saw other fisherman breaking the law. The special enforcement netted 416 resource related tickets ranging from taking fish in closed waters to not having a valid fishing license. This year, Alaska Wildlife Troopers made 4634 contacts with the public in their enforcement efforts across the state.

Alaska Wildlife Troopers: Begin Criminal Investigation Following Villager Reports of Illegal Fishing Alaska Wildlife Troopers Investigate Claims of Illegal Fishing on Yukon The Alaska Wildlife Troopers are in the process of conducting an investigation into reports of illegal subsistence fishing near the village of Marshall, located along the lower Yukon River. These reports came about in part from statements made to reporters by villagers. The reports allege that residents from Marshall participated in a king salmon harvest when the season was not opened. [AWT Director Colonel Gary Folger remarked] We will conduct an investigation and if it discloses criminal behavior occurred, we will present our findings to the District Attorney s Office for review. As with most fish and game violations, this type of crime is considered a misdemeanor with a maximum fine of $5000 and/or one year in jail. The type of violation, prior criminal history and impact on the resource are all taken into account when sentencing occurs.
