Lacrosse in England Lacrosse is not a new sport in the United Kingdom and is played most commonly in private prep schools and colleges during a window from October through February and March making a Spring Break trip ideal. The growth of the sport on the girls side has been exponential over the past decade. At this point there are more girls playing lacrosse in Great Britain than men and teams throughout the countries provide excellent competition. The sport came to the U.K. via traveling Canadians in the mid-to-late 1800 s and quickly took root in both the men s and women s athletic curriculum. The men s lacrosse World Championships have been held in England three times with a fourth coming in July 2018 in Manchester. The women s World Cup has been held in England twice and once in Scotland. The 2017 Women s Lacrosse World Cup will be held in the U.K., as well. The lady Brits have never finished lower than 5th place in any Women s Lacrosse World Cup proving their ability to consistently compete with the best in the world. 2017 and 2018 are huge years for the sport in England as both the men's and women s world championships will take place in the north of the country in and around Manchester. First in 2017 the Women s Lacrosse World Cup will take the field where the host nation hopes to reach new heights. While England ladies have never finished below 5th place in any World Cup, they have never done better than a pair of 2nd place finishes. The current Team England women s squad features University of Maryland attacker Megan Whittle. In 2018 the Men s Lacrosse World Championships makes its way to Manchester as the Canadian team tries to defend its title. The English men s squad, fresh off their 2016 European Championships title, features former Georgetown University attack man Zack Guy and former Drew University Alex Majd.
