Commodore s Report Hope you enjoyed sailing this summer. Even though the summer season is over, the sailing season at OYS is not. September still has two weeks of Wednesday and Thursday racing. The Cruise to Nowhere on the 13th is open to all OYS members. Even if you don t go sailing on Saturday the 13th, come down to the club for dinner and a corn roast. The Sunday racing series starts up the first weekend of September. There are lots of opportunities left to enjoy sailing and fall can be a wonderful time of year to be on the water. August at OYS was regatta month!! A great event; thanks to Murray Souter and the OYS Regatta committee for organizing this very enjoyable weekend. The J27s held their North American championship at the OYS Weekend Regatta and we had over 40 other boats participate on the water. The cruising group went to RCYC, NYC and ABYC for the long weekend for the Commodore s cruise. Leslie and I had a great time at the OYS Commodore s Gilligan s Island cruise. Thanks to everyone who dressed the part and helped all their fellow castaways enjoy their time on the island. Memorable appearances by The Howells, Ginger the movie star and all the Mary Annes. Please see Graham Knight s comments on this year s haul out. We are working with our landlord, the Town, to facilitate the replacement of the South harbour wall. For OYS members, this means that many of us will see our winter storage location adjusted. OYS will still be responsible to haul, store and then launch our members boats in the Spring. The winter storage location for some boats will be North of the OYS clubhouse. For those boats, haul out will be during the week ahead of the last weekend in October. Those members affected will be notified by the OYS harbourmaster. We have had a successful trial run with the Summer Club Co-ordinator position. Our club bartender, Karen Wykes, has stepped up to the role and has contributed to operating the club behind the scenes as well as from behind the bar. See you at the Cruise to No Where and on the water off of OYS. Cheers, Bill. Cruising Director s Report OYS CRUISE TO NOWHERE Saturday, September 13th All Cruisers (and Racers too!) can take part. 2
On Saturday September 13th we will have our end of season Cruise to Nowhere. This is a BYOP (Bring your own Protein) and BYOB event (the bar will not be open, so you can bring your own beverages) Take a cruise to wherever you wish and return to the club by 4:00 p.m. We will have a barbecue and a corn boil. You provide your protein (meat or fish etc.) and we will provide the corn. Everyone will do their own cooking. There is NO LIMIT on the number of participants, no sign-up is required. Just be there and enjoy the fun. Please bring a plate of hors d oeuvre s, or salad or dessert to share. Maurice and Linda Stevens will be hosting. Joel. Harbourmaster s Report The OYS 2014-2015 winter storage applications have been emailed out to members and they are due back to me no later than Wednesday September 17th. I have update on the town of Oakville replacement of the OYS south seawall project. This project is scheduled to start in the late fall and be completed over the winter. OYS will have to store approximately 20 small sailboats (less than 30 ft) on the town property in Shipyard Park just to the north of the OYS north fence. The town has assigned the first 2 rows of the parking (west of the OYS gate) for storage of OYS sailboats for this winter. We will be identifying these sailboats and notify the OYS owners once we ve developed our 2014-2015 storage plan. As part of unstacking of OYS cradles in the yard on Saturday morning October 18th, any cradles for sailboats to be stored on the town property will moved into their storage location with the bobcat. Also the town will be hauling these OYS sailboats as part of their haul-out plan. Since the OYS sailboats will be in the first 2 rows, the town will be hauling these sailboats on Wednesday October 22nd starting at noon. I will be scheduling an OYS work party the hauling and adjusting of the cradle pads. The town will also be launching these sailboats in the spring of 2015 and I will schedule a work party in support of this. Once these sailboats have been launched, members will need to collapse their cradles. These cradles will be moved in the OYS yard and stacked on the OYS 2015 cradle stacking day. OYS will retain the winter storage fees for these sailboats and the town will be providing haul-out and launch of these sailboats free of charge. I will be scheduling a work party to setup the OYS mast racks on Saturday morning September 26th at 9:00am. I need 7 members for this work party and it will take about 2 hours. Members can signup on the OYS website under volunteering. Thanks Graham 3
