A Word From The Publisher Activity around the gun club picks up in September. Not from Skeet shoots, but from hunters wanting to brush up on their skills as they prepare for hunting season. Many Skeet shooters also enjoy hunting. That is why we have less Skeet shoots held after the World. Unfortunately, not all hunters enjoy competitive Skeet, Trap or Sporting Clays. That said, they are still potential competitive Skeet shooters. So, as you are practicing your game, be an ambassador for the sport when the fall migration of hunters arrive at your club. Just maybe some of those hunters will have so much fun, they will want to come back to compete. While you are at it, tell them about our magazine and website. Perhaps they will see how much fun we are having and they will want to try their hand at competitive Skeet. Maybe the Skeet bug will bite them and we will get a new shooter. Speaking of bugs, I want to remind everyone to be sure to use bug repellent when they are out early or late shooting. West Nile virus is a real threat. The early symptoms are not very pronounced and you can get very sick with life threatening results or life altering results so easily. I have a family member who was recently infected by this disease and I am here to tell you, it could happen to you. All it takes is one mosquito bite! Many of you will be going to the World Skeet Championships at the end of this month. I will not be there this year, but if you go, I am wishing you great success. To those of you involved in scheduling shoots for 2015, please remember to send us your State schedules and flyers for your shoots so we can share them with our readers. Until I see you on the Skeet field or in these pages, I am wishing you 3 @ 8. Doug Frey Page 2

Dog Days Open I Red Chute Shotgun Sports Club on Barksdale, AFB hosted the Dog Days Open on August 16, 2014. The temperatures were the hottest we have had this year. The competition was hot too! Michael Vickers [pictured below] shot a 98 in the 20 Gauge Event claiming the 20 Gauge Champion title. Thomas Sanders beat Wayne Tanner in a shoot-off to settle the 20 Gauge Runner-Up placement. This is Thomas first year of registered Skeet and he is showing great promise. Thomas is featured in Hat Shoot Events in this issue. Page 9

Dog Days Open I Everyone seemed to have a good time in spite of the heat and we certainly enjoyed hosting them. We hope you will come shoot with us again. We thank Paul Williamson for all his efforts putting this shoot on. In addition to handling all the facilities details, serving as Outdoor Recreation Manager and mechanic for our skeet machines, Paul does an excellent job as referee. We also want to thank Ted Ward, Christy Gay, and Kevin Hall for serving as referees. Thank you Debbie Frey for cooking up enough lasagna to feed us for two days. Thanks for that special brownie dessert and for serving as our registrar and scorekeeper. Thank you Cassie Crawford for taking photos and helping Debbie with the scores. As you can see, it takes a lot of people to make a shoot happen. To everyone who helped in any way, I say thank you. Thank you shooters for participating. Doug Frey Page 14

Dog Days Open II The Dog Days Open II was held on Sunday, August 17, 2014 at the Toby Bancroft Memorial Gun Club in West Monroe, Louisiana. We have scores and some photos to share with you from this shoot. I had the pleasure of shooting with Jared Gay, Randi Corley, Kacie Clanton and Thomas Sanders [pictured below]. They are a terrific bunch of young folks and I appreciate their letting me shoot on their squad. They are already stars in my book and they will play a big part in the future of Skeet in Louisiana. A bright future it will be with shooters like these. Page 18

Doubles Marathon Bayou Boeuf Skeet Club in LeCompte, Louisiana hosted their annual Doubles Marathon on August 9, 2014. I was unable to attend this shoot do to work and family schedule conflicts. I hate that, because Wade Jones usually puts on a good shoot. This two field club has lots of shade from the Summer sun. Being centrally located in Louisiana in LeCompte, it is a two hour or less drive from the four corners of the state. While we do not have photos from the shoot to share, we do have the scores. Bayou Boeuf Skeet Club usually hosts two shoots a year. The 28 Gauge Marathon in the Spring and the Doubles Marathon in late Summer. These shoots usually fill up quick. If you want to shoot Bayou Boeuf in 2015, you will want to pre-register early. We hope to see you there. Doug Frey Page 26

I LOVEL THE SMELL OF PAPER FEDERALS ON LABOR DAY On September 1, 2014 Clark Hartness posted on Face Book I love the smell of paper Federals on Labor Day. It smells like a dove field. to which I responded Paper hull scent causes déjà vu. Clark responded, I will expound a little on this shameless quote bending from Apocalypse Now after Doug's déjà vu comment. When I was young, my Dad, Homer B. Hartness Mr. Homer most called him, was in his late 40s by then and we spent many Sunday afternoons at the end of South Montgomery, or other local pools in the county fishing. There are many memories that I remember much more clearly now than my accomplishments of this past week. It was a great time to be a kid and nothing mattered but who caught the most hog-nose that day. When I was about 8 years old, back in the early 1970s, one of Dad's friends was a gentleman named Skipper White. Many from here in Starkville knew Skipper and it was Skipper who actually put the very first shotgun into my hands on a dove field, a 20 gauge Browning side-byside choked modified-modified. I was entirely too small for the gun, truthfully, to be shooting at all but I was somehow capable of bringing down two of the feathered rockets that day and sealing Dad's fate to let me shoot from that day forward rather than being his retriever. Those who knew my Dad understand that was a pretty tough job. I am who I am today because of my Dad. He told me some years later that I was smart, and could do anything I wanted to do but he wasn't going to bank-roll it, and dove hunting on the weekends was no exception. If I expected to shoot on the weekends I would have to spend an evening at the shop, Hartness Motor Company, reloading my shells. Dad would hardly pull the trigger if he was not confident he would kill the bird. His averages were extremely high on the dove field. A trait he instilled in me because when I had shot my shells I would be done for the day and demoted back at my retriever duties. Even a kid of 8 or 9 learns to make shots count when threaten as such. Dad had an old CH single stage reloader and back then the process for loading shells was complicated compared to today to say the least. I still have the reloader now but I have included a picture I lifted off EBay as it is stuck back. The reloader had a powder drop, four stations, and a shot drop. There was a re-sizing die and one wad column die. Page 37

I LOVEL THE SMELL OF PAPER FEDERALS ON LABOR DAY You basically had to pull the handle seven times while moving hulls from one die to another and stacking a recipe of filler wads, nitro cards and a neat little bow-tie shaped plastic wad that had to be perfectly held in line by hand as it was inserted in the hull. It generally took me a couple hours to load 50 Paper Federal 20 Gauge reloads. In retrospect. I have some nice PW reloaders today. It takes me about an hour to load 400-500 20 gauge shells. Paper shot-shell hulls have an aroma that is so distinct I could smell it across a field. My Skeet, Trap and Sporting friends can likely attest to this as well as they produce a pushing recoil rather than a snap, that may be somewhat psychological but that's my story. To this day the smell of that burning paper instantly transports me into the front seat of an ole rusty 1954 International pickup truck driving to the dove field for an afternoon with my Dad. The calls from the other hunters echo through. Right shoulder! Low bird! Nice double! The feeling when the bird crumples over the recoiling barrel and rockets to the ground. Yes even cleaning birds at the end of the day and eating them for dinner before the next weekend's hunt. I love the smell of paper Federals on Labor day. Thanks for sharing Clark. Many of us experienced a little déjà vu reading this. Mmmm My mind just wandered back to squirrel hunting with paper.410 loads and a single barrel Stevens and then, quail hunts with my Dad and an old Stevens 12 gauge side by side loaded with paper hull shells. Thanks again Clark! Doug Frey Page 38

THE RED CHUTE GAZETTE DEAL Mission Statement The goal of the Red Chute Gazette is to promote the game of American Skeet. Our target market includes Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Texas. Our goal is accomplished through publication and distribution an Internet only magazine containing items of interest to those individuals participating in, promoting and supporting registered skeet shoots. Subject matter includes calendars of upcoming events, shoot flyers, shoot reports and pictures. Also included are articles and stories about bird hunting, travel and food. The Deal The Red Chute Gazette will publish flyers advertising registered skeet shoots for your gun club at no cost to your club. Simply send us your flyer in Microsoft Word or PDF format via E-Mail. That s FREE! The Catch If we agree to publish your shoot flyers, you agree to provide us with a shoot report, write-up or article suitable for printing in the Red Chute Gazette. Include pictures (jpeg or gif files) if possible. It doesn t have to be lengthy and it doesn t have be worthy of a Pulitzer. Just tell or show our readers about the fun you had. What about Sporting Clays and Trap or other events? The mission of the Red Chute Gazette is to promote interest and participation in registered Skeet. Sporting Clays and Trap are not subjects we focus on. We recognize that many gun clubs offer events other than Skeet. We are happy to provide commercial advertising space for clubs that wish to promote other shooting related events. Please contact us for our very reasonable rates for commercial advertisers To take advantage of this service contact Doug Frey by phone at (318) 635-6218 or via E-Mail at publisher@redchutegazette.com... 2014 All Rights Reserved Douglas F.
