A Word From The Publisher Wow! Another year has passed here on planet Earth. Is it just me or does time seem to go by faster each year? Another year has dawned and it is now time to hit the ground running! For many, January is a time to re-boot. It s a time to realign our priorities and to refocus on our game plan for work and in our personal lives. For many it is a time to make resolutions. For the effective person, it is a time to work towards attaining goals. For those of us who work hard at maximizing our few available hours of non-work related downtime, it is a time of planning. Effective people plan and revisit their plans often to make sure they are on track to success. If you enjoy shooting Skeet, now is the time to start planning your 2016 Skeet itinerary. At the Red Chute Gazette, we are here to help you get started. If you are planning to shoot Skeet in Zone VI, we will have state specific shoot schedules and flyers from clubs who take advantage of our free flyer advertising service. Check our website and this magazine frequently to stay abreast. We are adding new flyers and information weekly. Those of you who are working in your local clubs to promote your Skeet shoots please remember to send us your flyers so we can share them with our readers. Perhaps this will be the year you volunteer to be one of our staff reporters sending us pictures and write-ups about your club s shoots and activities or even photos from your hunting trips. This month we have a few photos to share from Edmund Ring, DDS. Ed went to South Dakota to hunt pheasants last Fall. From the looks of it, he had a great time. Thank you for sharing Ed! This issue of the Red Chute Gazette kicks-off our 8 th year of promoting the sport of American Skeet. We want to take this moment to thank our readers and our advertisers for helping us. Thanks to Randy Brownlee for his write-up on the Labor of Tricky Holiday Treats and to Clark Hartness for sharing photos. Also thank you Wyatt Hampton for his write-up and photos from the Holiday Open. Until I see you on the Skeet field or in these pages, I am wishing you a Healthy Happy and Prosperous New Year and of course 3 @ 8. Doug Frey Page 2

Physical Fitness There I was. My scores were down, I was flinching badly and wearing out before the event was over. After a rigorous career of riding a desk and then 10 years of retirement I must admit I was butter soft. Out of desperation I signed up for Anytime Fitness. They gave me a session of instruction that was aimed at my shooting and general wellbeing. My goal, stop the terrible scores that had me struggling in the eighties. Now I was never a big time AAA shooter but I was respectable and that was the goal - get back to respectable. After a year of doing work outs about 4 times a week my flinching is down about 90 percent (not eliminated) my scores have trended upward but I don't have six pack abs, in fact my abs look more like a suitcase of Bud. After my experience I would recommend that doing some basic workout at home or at a gym will make you feel better and if you shoot I believe you will do better at that sport. No you won't make the cover of a physical fitness magazine in your speedo but the folks at a local physical fitness shop can give you some help if you explain what you sport is, and show them the muscles involved in our game. I would also say you don't have to be old and fat to have improvement in your game by improving your conditioning. When you think about it shooting involves lifting over 500 pounds in a hour. That is not construction labor but it is a significant use of muscles that must be controlled in a very precise manner and having well-conditioned muscles has helped me. Bill Thanks for the tip and inspiration Bill! Page 9

Labor of Tricky Holiday Treats Open Usually December in Mississippi finds cold, damp and windy skies. Well, on Friday afternoon December 4 th at Coast Rifle and Pistol Club in Biloxi we found blue skies and temps hanging around 70. It was perfect weather for a Skeet shoot. Doubles started at 1:30 PM with Texas own Don Snyder [ pictured on the right ] prevailing over 21 other hopefuls. Ralph Grasso was Runner Up and CRPC s own Jerry Richburg claimed 3 rd. Saturday morning was a bit cool as the shooting started. Mississippi s Clark Hartness [ pictured below] came for blood and he claimed the 12 Gauge Champ title with the lone 100. This left Don Snyder and Nathan Boyd shooting off 99 s for Runner Up and 3 rd. As we started the 20 in the afternoon, the 70 s had returned with bluebird skies. Ralph Grasso [ pictured on the right ] out lasted Glenn Rickman and Allen Winstead all with 99s. Ralph was the Champ, Glenn Runner Up and Allen 3 rd. Page 13

Labor of Tricky Holiday Treats Open Jeff Bell, Don Snyder, Glen Dawson, Nathan Boyd, Randy Brownlee, Brad West and Cathy Grasso. Nathan was Champion and the others were class winners for our Tricky Holiday Shoot-off. It was a fun shoot-off every with everyone entered and also handicapped. On Saturday, following shoot-offs, we had the Tricky Treat.410 bore Shootout! This was a handicapped event, in more ways than one, where everyone was entered. One person from each Class was rewarded with some extra targets from a blind draw. Mississippi s Nathan Boyd won the event with Class winners from each Class also making the pay window. Sunday Morning found a bit warmer temps warming to the mid 70 s through the day. The 28 found Glenn Rickman [ pictured on the left ] took Champ, Glen Dawson Runner-Up, and Allen Winstead 3 rd. Still sporting clear blue skies for the.410 and the best part was absolutely no wind! Again, Texas Don won the.410 with a 99, with Clark Hartness taking Runner Up and Nathan Boyd 3 rd. Don Snyder was HOA Champ and HAA Champ. Page 14

Labor of Tricky Holiday Treats Open Clark Hartness, Easlin Moore, Norman Young, Don Snyder, and Glenn Rickman. Jay & Debbie Byrd celebrated their Anniversary. We at CRPC Skeet also had the chance to show off our new clubhouse. Great weather, great targets, great friends and a great time were had by all. Check out all the scores at www.msskeet.org. We invite you to our Annual Redfish Open in the second week of April 2016. We have 18 camper spots and will pray for a repeat of the weather. We would love to have you shoot with us. QUOTABLE QUOTES From Thomas Jefferson "When we get piled upon one another in large cities, as in Europe, we shall become as corrupt as Europe." "The democracy will cease to exist when you take away from those who are willing to work and give to those who would not." "It is incumbent on every generation to pay its own debts as it goes. A principle which if acted on would save one-half the wars of the world." "I predict future happiness for Americans if they can prevent the government from wasting the labors of the people under the pretense of taking care of them." "My reading of history convinces me that most bad government results from too much government." "No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms." "The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government." "The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants." "To compel a man to subsidize with his taxes the propagation of ideas which he disbelieves and abhors is sinful and tyrannical." "I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies. If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of their currency, first by inflation, then by deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around the banks will deprive the people of all property - until their children wakeup homeless on the continent their fathers conquered." Page 29

News From The High House (A Message for Louisiana Skeet Shooters) Happy New Year from the Louisiana Skeet Shooting Association! In the next few weeks, Christy Gay and I will be mailing out the pocket schedules for Louisiana Skeet shoots, as well as the renewal notices for dues. As usual, Lafayette Skeet Club will kick off our Skeet Season with the 10 th Annual Youth Skeet Event on March 5. This Skeet clinic is open to youth ages 6 to 18 and has been a great avenue to teach young people gun safety and to give them a taste of the game of American Skeet. For more information on participation or how you can help with that, look for the flyer which will be posted soon at: http://redchutegazette.com/shoot-flyers.html Our first registered Skeet shoot in Louisiana will be the Crawfish Étouffée Open at Lafayette Skeet Club on March 6. This will be a 12 Gauge Marathon and the first 200 target Marathon of the 2016 Louisiana Marathon Buckle Race. If you want to shoot that one, please let me know. I am handling the pre-registration for that event. The flyer for that event should be posted soon at: http://redchutegazette.com/shoot-flyers.html In October of last year, the LSSA Board voted to make a minor tweak to the rules for the 2016 Louisiana Marathon Buckle Race. Shooters will be allowed to register any gauge targets for the 2016 Louisiana Marathon Buckle Race at any qualifying Buckle Race Event in Louisiana. In 2016, if you shoot 200 targets in a different gauge than what is scheduled at a Louisiana Marathon Buckle Race Event, you may register them as Targets Only and get credit for them in the Buckle Race. This will make it easier for people to get their qualifying targets. Be sure to tell Shoot Management what you are doing at registration. The Board also decided to give buckles to the Runner-Ups, starting with 2015. Remember, to qualify for the Louisiana Marathon Buckle Race. Participants must be Louisiana shooters and must shoot in qualifying 200 target marathon events in each gauge. You must also shoot at least one of those events at a different club in Louisiana. If you shoot in more than one qualifying marathon event in a given gauge, the highest score you post will be used in the contest. Winners are determined by ranking the scores from the qualifying events and determining HOA Classifications based on the highest scores each participant shoots in each gauge. It sounds a lot more complicated than it actually is. An Excel worksheet that makes the math easy. Page 30

SKEETER S PONDERINGS If swimming is so good for your figure, how do you explain whales? Skeeter s Word of the Month Funancier, Noun The party who pays for the entertainment of another. See parent or boy friend. Page 34

Funnies nies NOT THAT ANY OF US ARE OLD!!! I never really liked the term "Old Person" but this makes me feel better about it. And if you aren't one, I bet you know one! I got this from an "Old Person" friend of mine! I'm passing this on as I did not want to be the only old person receiving it. Actually, it's not a bad thing to be called, as you will see. Old People are easy to spot at sporting events; during the playing of the National Anthem. Old People remove their caps and stand at attention and sing without embarrassment. They know the words and believe in them. Old People remember World War II, Pearl Harbor, Guadalcanal, Normandy and Hitler. They remember the Atomic Age, the Korean War, The Cold War, the Jet Age and the Moon Landing. They remember the 50 plus Peace-keeping Missions from 1945 to 2005, not to mention Vietnam. If you bump into an Old Person on the sidewalk he will apologize. If you pass an Old Person on the street, he will nod or tip his cap to a lady. Old People trust strangers and are courtly to women. Old People hold the door for the next person and always, when walking, make certain the lady is on the inside for protection. Old People get embarrassed if someone curses in front of women and children and they don't like any filth or dirty language on TV or in movies. Old People have moral courage and personal integrity. They seldom brag unless it's about their children or grandchildren. It's Old People who remove their hats while eating in a restaurant in respect for the ladies and guests. It's the Old People who know our great country is protected, not by politicians, but by the young men and women in the military serving their country. This country needs Old People with their work ethic, sense of responsibility, pride in their country and decent values. We need them now more than ever. Thank God for Old People. I was taught to respect my elders. It's just getting harder to find them. Page 35

THE RED CHUTE GAZETTE DEAL Mission Statement The goal of the Red Chute Gazette is to promote the game of American Skeet. Our target market includes Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Texas. Our goal is accomplished through publication and distribution an Internet only magazine containing items of interest to those individuals participating in, promoting and supporting registered skeet shoots. Subject matter includes calendars of upcoming events, shoot flyers, shoot reports and pictures. Also included are articles and stories about bird hunting, travel and food. The Deal The Red Chute Gazette will publish flyers advertising registered skeet shoots for your gun club at no cost to your club. Simply send us your flyer in Microsoft Word or PDF format via E-Mail. That s FREE! The Catch If we agree to publish your shoot flyers, you agree to provide us with a shoot report, write-up or article suitable for printing in the Red Chute Gazette. Include pictures (jpeg or gif files) if possible. It doesn t have to be lengthy and it doesn t have be worthy of a Pulitzer. Just tell or show our readers about the fun you had. What about Sporting Clays and Trap or other events? The mission of the Red Chute Gazette is to promote interest and participation in registered Skeet. Sporting Clays and Trap are not subjects we focus on. We recognize that many gun clubs offer events other than Skeet. We are happy to provide commercial advertising space for clubs that wish to promote other shooting related events...
