The Battle of Zahna. September, 1813 The Battle of Zahna, was a prelude to the battle of Dennewitz. The advance-guard of the Oudinot's French-Bavarian XII Corps (part of the Ney's Army of Berlin) encountered the Tauentzien's Prussian Corps during the advance towards Berlin. The actual battle reduced to a French demonstration (only five battalions were engaged) that forced the Prussians to retire towards the Bernadotte's Army of the North. Two days later, the battle of Dennewitz would end the Berlin adventure. Zahna is described in the Nafziger's book 'Napoleon at Dresden. The Battles of August 1813' (The Emperor Press, Chicago, 1994), and there is also an OOB for Zahna in the Nafziger collection, now in the U.S. Combined Arms Research Library. (http://www.cgsc.edu/carl/nafziger/813iah.pdf). Both sources have been used to design this Scenario for Lasalle, but I have not used all the forces listed in the Nafziger's OOB, that is strongly un-balanced towards the French. Instead, I have used the French Liberation lists of the Lasalle ruleset, using the core list and adding all the organic brigades and one Allied brigade (Bavarians). The resulting French force is very similar in size to the Prussian IV Corps, thus producing a more fair game-. My acknowledgements to my good Argentinean friend Armand d'arc: he suggested me this little battle. The Dennewitz campaign was fought over plain and sandy terrain, so the table has not any significant terrain feature, exception made form the wood (rough terrain). However, the actual table map would be slightly different due to the fog of war. 19/04/2010-11:51 1/6

Except when indicated, the rest of the units are small (four-base) (2) In order to follow the Lasalle philosophy, the French chain of command has been shortened, by eliminating the brigade commanders of the 13 th, 29 th (Bavarian) and 29 th Light Cavalry divisions. These divisions are directly commanded by their divisional generals. However, there is an additional division commander (14 th Division) to be used if necessary. (3) The Prussian OOB reflects the ad-hoc arrangement of the IV Corps in the day of the battle. 19/04/2010-11:51 3/6
