NYCLB Scuttlebutt Gary Halliburton, Commodore Hello All Members, Isn t it great to have our parking area back without the unsightly trailer sitting in front of our club? It will also be nice when some of our boats return to the Bay. We hope to have our view back when the two boats parked on the dock are moved. It s time to begin working with the city to amend our lease to allow us to use the dock in front of our club. If any of you have experience in negotiating with the city we would love to have you step forward and let one of the board members know of your interest. There is an exciting month ahead of us, with the annual July 3 rd fireworks display put on by the Boathouse on the Bay restaurant. We have a spectacular view of the fireworks from our location. Later in the month we begin our fundraising efforts for the Children s Clinic; the Charity Regatta Swap Meet, Golf Tournament, and Burger Bash. There are potlucks on Friday nights, and a Cruise Out to American Legion Yacht Club on July 31 st. We hope to see you at the club this summer. In early June, some of our members went on a Cruise Out to Two Harbors Catalina where they enjoyed a barbecue on the beach and played bocce ball. See photos on page 10. Also, the Father s Day Barbecue was an amazing experience. Chef Victor Padilla prepared tri tip and chicken on the barbie along with his culinary wife Pam. A big thanks to the two of them for all their work in putting together our recent monthly events. Gary Commodore Page 2
NYCLB Scuttlebutt Roy Queen, Vice Commodore Greetings Friends, I hope all you dads out there had a wonderful Father s Day. It sounds like the party at the clubhouse was a success. We are just a few days away from our annual 3 rd of July Fireworks show at the club house. Last year we had 137 members along with their guests in attendance. I believe that was the largest number of people we have ever had at the club house. Like last year, you will probably need to show your name badge or your Navy Yacht Club ID to the officer as you turn into the parking lot. Parking in the area will be tight, so if you can, try to car-pool with family and friends. And remember, it is always a good idea to have a designated driver for your ride home. We want folks to have fun and enjoy themselves, but be responsible at the same time. You will have the best seat in the house for the show. There will be great food and drinks, along with a festive atmosphere. If you have RSVP d for the event, reread the 3rd of July flyer in your email from June 22. There is some important information you need to be aware of. It s going to be a lot of fun! I hope to see you there. Vice Commodore Roy C Queen Page 3
NYCLB Scuttlebutt Victor Padilla, Jr. Staff Commodore Hello from your Jr. Staff Commodore, I can t believe that July is upon us, with half the year almost gone. Wait, that s how I opened last month s article. I feel like a Southern California weather reporter; they have it easy, as in saying about every other day, Sunny and clear tomorrow. Our Father s Day BBQ was once again under clear skies and warm. If you missed this event, well I would say that you missed out on the premier event of this year. Commodore Gary Halliburton s wife Susan mentioned that it seems whenever our club holds an event we have beautiful weather! There have been a few rainy days earlier this year, but we ve managed to dodge those days. About 65 persons attended the Father s Day BBQ and Pam and I hosted the party. I did the cooking and Pam and others from the club helped out setting up the outside tables and food. I heard that the Tri-Tip and Chicken was the best I ever made. Thank you to all who helped. Bar manager Tommy Wheeler once again had his new bartenders in training. I witnessed Tommy standing out of the bar area and giving advice when asked from his crew. I would like to see a couple more new members behind the bar helping out because this is where you meet our members and guests and make new friends.. Now I would like to put this out to all: we really need members to step up and take over the socials, as Pam and I are stepping aside. We have been doing this for the past three years. It s time for the two of us to sit back and enjoy our socials and all of you. We will help out when asked. Thank you, Victor Padilla Jr. Staff Commodore Page 4
NYCLB Scuttlebutt Becky Martinez, Rear Commodore Hello All, Just can t believe it s July! I guess when you re having fun the time just flies by! This past Opening Day Season was a most pleasant experience. I attended several Opening Day ceremonies and I must say the most memorable of them all, besides Navy s opening day of course, were the Lake Gregory and Lake Arrowhead Yacht Club events. Lake Gregory Yacht Club was the most welcoming, friendly and inspiring club of them all. Would you believe that three of their members purchased a building for their clubhouse and they rent the clubhouse to its members for a dollar per month! their members volunteer to remodel the newly purchased building. What a team! The view of the lake and the forest from Lake Arrowhead Yacht Club was spectacular! Their club has boat slips directly in front of the building, a large patio, kitchen and much more. Because of the weather in Lake Arrowhead they are only open three months of the year. In the off season, the members store their boats in the clubhouse, yes,in the club house! The friendliness and spirit of volunteerism among the members of both clubs reminds me of our Navy Yacht Club. I can t wait to visit both again this summer! And I hope some of you will consider attending their Opening Days next year. You ll love it Happy July, Becky Martinez Rear Commodore Page 5

Race Committee Chair Hello All, The 2015 race season is in full swing! While NYCLB may not sponsor many races, our racing members are very active and successful! In the Spring Long Point Race (the first of the Catalina Island Series) on May 30-31, three of our members entered the race. NYCLB now has the distinction of being the only yacht club with a member who took two firsts, and the only yacht club with two boats that earned firsts! They are Guy Rosenlof who sailed his Hunter 28.5, Lodgehall, to two firsts in class D; and John Setchell who took a first in his Santa Cruz 33, Windfall, in Class C. In addition, Bill Barham sailed his Ranger 29 Latitude to a second in Class D for both races. In the second race of the Catalina Island Series, Emerald Bay Race, on June 13-14, Guy Rosenlof took another two firsts, and Bill Barham took one second. John Setchell took one 3 rd and is now second overall in his class. Next month we will report on races in late June/July. If you are racing, we want to acknowledge you. Please send any racing news to me at 1123camille@gmail.com Smooth sailing! Camille D Esopo Race Committee Chair The cure for anything is salt water, sweat, tears or the sea. Isak Dinesen P A G E 7
Fleet Captain Grayce Hardy Hello Members, Summer has arrived and we finally have our parking lot back. Now if we could just have the use of the long dock again, life would go back to 'normal.' ;) Tripp and I missed the cruise-out to Catalina in June as we had other commitments. I understand that there was a great turnout with 7 boats and 16 members participating. Thank you to Frank Farmer and Larry Brown for leading this event. We will be going back to Catalina in September and I look forward to being a part of that cruise-out. July is going to be a fun month as we kick off with our 4 th of July festivities on Friday the 3rd. Bring a dish to share, enjoy a burger or hot dog, sit back and enjoy socializing with other members while watching the fireworks. Our cruise-out for July is scheduled for The American Legion in Newport. Mark your calendars and plan to join us by land or by sea July 31 to August 2nd. In the meantime, happy boating everyone! Stay safe and we'll see you at the club! Your Fleet Captain, Grayce Hardy "In Life It's Not Where You Go. It's Who You Travel With" Charles Schultz H E S C U T T L E B U T T Page 8
