Same If you tried to paint a better scenario for a Montana Montana State basketball showdown, you d be hard pressed to beat Saturday s setup for the 295th Brawl of the Wild in Bozeman. The Griz and Cats are currently in a three-way tie for fourth place alongside Idaho heading into the final two weekends of the regular season, each looking to secure an all-important firstround bye at the league championship with a top-five finish. Montana (14-14, 9-6 BSC) has won four out of the last five, hitting a bump in the road against Sacramento State last Thursday before rebounding to beat Portland State at home on Saturday. Montana State holds an identical record (14-14, 9-6 BSC), and has been playing some of its best basketball of the season in recent weeks. MSU has won four-straight home games including overtime victories over Idaho and Eastern Washington, and their last eight games have been decided by six points or less, including UM s 90-84 win in Missoula on Feb. 4. While there are no guarantees in rivalry basketball, you can bet both teams will be as fired up as ever to take the court on Saturday. We re going to have to bring our A-game. It s the biggest game of the year on our schedule, no question about it. You have to come with a championship mentality, said Montana head coach Travis DeCuire, who is looking forward to the rivalry environment. They re energetic, their football team s there, it s rowdy, it s noisy. When it s been like that for Eastern and Idaho, you d better expect it s going to be louder for the Griz. We embrace that. We look forward to those crowds. I think we play our best basketball in those types of atmospheres. In addition to pride, bragging rights, and a potential first-round bye, history is also on the line for the Griz in Bozeman on Saturday. In over a century of basketball, Montana has never led Montana State in the all-time series, dating back to the first meeting between the two in 1905. The Grizzlies tied the series at 147 wins each on Feb. 4 in Missoula, and have the opportunity to put UM ahead for the first time ever. THE GAME: Tipoff for the Griz/Cat game is set for 7 p.m. on Feb. 25 at Brick Breeden Fieldhouse in a Bozeman doubleheader, with the Lady Griz and Cats getting started at 2 PM. MONTANA BASKETBALL The Grizzlies have won 13-straight games over six-straight seasons against the Cats, dating back to the 2010-11 campaign under Wayne Tinkle. With senior night at MSU on Saturday, Montana s group of four seniors is a class that has never suffered a defeat to their cross-state rivals, and DeCuire wants to make sure his younger squad members understand the importance of the game he learned as a player at UM. I think guys in our program should feel obligated to help them (seniors) finish it off, and that s something for Griz to be proud of and to look back on and be able to say. I can t do that. I don t know how many Griz there were, or Cats there were, who can look back and say they never lost. Not only is Saturday s game surrounded by intrigue off the court, the on-court matchups look especially tantalizing as well. MSU brings two of the Big Sky s best shooters to the court in guards Tyler Hall (22.8 PPG) and Harald Frey (13.2 PPG). Hall has been one of the nation s top shooters all season long, currently sitting at No. 5 in the NCAA rankings in total points. While defenses around the league have focused their attention on Hall, Frey has stepped up at the Big Sky s No. 17 scorer. Together, they have guided MSU to the No. 1 spot on made threes in the league this season. It s a good thing Montana thrives on perimeter defense. The Grizzlies have the Big Sky s second best three-point defense, allowing opponents to make a mere 34 percent of shots from behind the arc. With the stifling defense of Montana s backcourt, this game has potential to be decided from the outside, not unusual in the guard-heavy Big Sky. It s crazy because it s the key every week, said DeCuire on his teams need to produce perimeter defense. This is a game where you ve got two guys (Hall and Frey) who can create their own shot and create for others almost as well as anyone in our league. That s very difficult to guard, and that s why they re so good at home. So, we re going to have to play the best defense we ve played in months. BRAWL OF THE WILD: The 2017 Brawl of the Wild series is presented by Northwestern Energy, Town Pump Food Stores, and BlueCross BlueShield of Montana. With Men s and Women s Indoor Track and Field results still pending this week, Montana currently trails Montana State 3-5 in the 2016-17 Brawl of the Wild standings, the annual all-sport competition between the two schools. Montana has won every series since its inception in 2013. IMPLICATIONS: With Weber State losing to Eastern Washington and Idaho defeating Idaho State on Thursday, the top of the Big Sky table is wide open heading into Saturday s round of games. At 12-3, North Dakota sits on top of the standings (a team the Griz beat in January), with EWU and WSU tied in second at 11-4. Idaho, Montana and Montana State all sit in a tie for fourth place on the table at 9-6. The winner of the Griz/Cat game could potentially move into a game out of second place with both Montana and Montana State set to travel to Ogden to face Weber next week, and Idaho set to face Weber on Saturday. LAST MATCHUP: Montana made 23-straight free throws to finish the game in Missoula on Feb. 4, and exploded for 60 second-half points (26 of which came from Ahmaad Rorie) to give the Griz a 90-84 win. Ahmaad Rorie scored a game-high 28 points, and Michael Oguine added 22 and pulled down nine rebounds to lead the Griz. Montana s defense held Hall and Frey both to a pair of quiet 22 point outings, and UM s bench outscored the Cats 25-20 while scoring 12 more points in the paint than the visitors. MONTANA BASKETBALL GRIZ BASKETBALL HEAD COACH TRAVIS DECUIRE 3rd season at Montana 6 years as an assistant at Cal 55-39 (36-14 BSC) to date at Montana A 94 Montana graduate Holds career assist record at Montana (435) Home Record 33-11 (20-7 BSC) Road Record 19-25 (17-7 BSC) Neutral: 3-3 In the two years since taking over as the University of Montana s 27th men s head basketball coach, Travis DeCuire has accomplished something no other coach in UM history has: posted two 20-win seasons in his first two seasons. Now entering the third season at his alma mater, DeCuire is once again poised to put the Grizzlies back on the road to a 20-win season. DeCuire (pronounced: Dee-CURE) was formally introduced as the Grizzlies head basketball coach in June of 2014, at a press conference at UM s Adams Center after the initial announcement from UM s Director of Athletics Kent Haslam in May of that year. 41-15 (28-8 BSC) In his first season at the helm of a program with a rich history of success, DeCuire s Griz started the year picked to finish eighth in the conference. Led by future European professional Jordan Gregory, UM would go on to defy expectations and win the regular season Big Sky championship, and advance to the National Invitational Tournament (NIT) before finishing the season 20-13 (14-4 BSC). At the time, he became only the second coach in UM history to put up 20 wins in his first season at the helm; a feat Blaine Taylor accomplished in the 91-92 season when his Grizzlies went 27-4. In DeCuire s second year he followed up with another 20-win season and another trip to the Big Sky championship game, this time led by another future European professional, Martin Breunig. DeCuire s Grizzlies would once again advance to the postseason, competing in the first round of the CBI tournament against Nevada finishing with a 21-12 (14-4 BSC) record. Before returning to Montana as head coach, DeCuire, a former standout point guard for the Grizzlies, spent six seasons on the University of California coaching staff and his second as the Golden Bears associate head coach. Regarded as one of the top mentors in the game, DeCuire helped former Cal (and Montana) mentor Mike Montgomery transform Cal into one of the winningest programs in the Pac-12 Conference during his time in Berkeley. The Bears reached the postseason all six years he was on the staff. Before his six-year stint at Cal, he spent five seasons as an assistant coach under former Griz head coach and player Blaine Taylor at Old Dominion, where he helped the Monarchs to a combined record of 117-53. The mark included 94 wins his final four years - the most in school history over a four-year stretch. ODU reached the postseason each of those four years as well and advanced to the NCAA Tournament in both 2005 and 2007. In addition, the Monarchs reached the NIT semifinals in 2006 and the quarterfinals of the College Basketball Invitational in 2008. ODU s best overall record came in 2004-05 when the Monarch s finished 28-6 overall. They also won 24 games each of the next two seasons, posting marks of 24-10 in 2006 and 24-9 in 07. DeCuire, from Seattle, Wash., has head coaching experience from stints at Sammamish High School and Green River Community College in Washington. Before joining the staff at Old Dominion, he had two successful years as head coach at Green River Community College in Seattle. After taking over a last-place program in 2001-02, DeCuire guided the team to a conference championship and its first 20-win season in over 20 years, earning league Coach of the Year honors in 2003 to cap off his second season. DeCuire earlier served as head coach at Sammamish High School in Bellevue, leading the school to two conference titles, a state tournament appearance and three consecutive trips to the district tournament. As a point guard for Montana from 1992-94 DeCuire was named All-Big Sky Conference as a junior and senior. He set a school record in just three seasons with 435 career assists. He also established UM s single-season mark with 199 assists as a senior in 1993-94, when he was ranked 12th in the nation, averaging 7.1 assists a game. He was the recipient of the Grizzlies Carl Dragstedt Award (MVP) as a junior (he shared it with forward Matt Kempfert that season) and senior, and received the John Eaheart Award (Outstanding Defensive Player) following his senior year. As a freshman at Chaminade-Hawaii, he was a starter and team MVP in 1990. He then transferred to Montana and redshirted in 1991. He attended Mercer Island High School (Wash.), where he was a three-year starter and all-state, team MVP, and a McDonald s All-America honorable mention pick as a senior. He has a strong commitment to community service, and founded and acted as president of the Fastbreak Basketball Association, an organization that assists in teaching life lessons and building self-esteem through basketball to more than 500 students in the Seattle-Tacoma area. In addition, he has extensive experience in counseling with the Echo Glen Children s Center in Snoqualmie, Wash., from 1996-98 and with the Ryther Children s Center in North Seattle from 1995-97. DeCuire graduated from Montana in 1994 with a degree in business marketing. He and his wife, Sabrina, have two daughters; Brianna (23) and Tamia (4). Travis birth date is Nov. 21, 1970

MONTANA BASKETBALL WALTER WRIGHT PRESEASON ALL-BIG SKY GUARD 2015-16 Big Sky Honorable Mention 13.2 Points-per-Game 2015-16 152 Assists Walter Wright put together an impressive first season in the Big Sky where the 5-foot-10 Connecticut native helped lead the Griz to a 21-12 season, gave out 152 assists, and averaged 13.2 points-per-game. His junior season reached its zenith at the Big Sky tournament in Reno where he scored 50 points in three games, earning a place on the all-tournament team and an All-Big Sky honorable mention. Observers around the league have taken notice and heading into his senior season, Wright has earned a place on the 2016-17 Big Sky men's basketball preseason all-conference team. Wright will have company as one of the Big Sky's best guards this season. With no obvious returning big men set to dominate in the post, the preseason all-conference forecast is loaded with ball handlers and not a single forward or center listed among them. Two of last year's three leading scorers in the Big Sky return this season and are represented alongside Wright on the preseason all-conference team. North Dakota's Quinton Hooker (20.1 PPG) and Idaho State's Ethan Telfair (20.2 PPG) have earned a spot on the team with Hooker taking preseason MVP honors. Also joining Wright on the preseason team is Weber State's Jeremy Senglin, who posted the league's second-best three-point percentage last season, draining 106 of his 245 shots from behind the arc. Victor Sanders, Idaho's leading scorer from last year with a 15.9 PPG average earns a nod from the Big Sky voters, as does last season's Big Sky Freshman of the Year Tyler Hall of Montana State. So much competition at the guard position doesn't worry DeCuire however. If Wright can return to the confidence levels he saw at the end of last season while at the same time managing his assist-to-turnover ratio, the Montana game plan will come to fruition. "I think for him the key is having the consistency to take off where he left off from last year. If he can do that then I'll be happy with where we're at as a team." Wright and the Griz begin their quest for a return trip to the Big Sky championship on November 11 at Southern Cal. Montana will play its home opener three days later on Nov. 14 against the Wyoming Cowboys in Missoula. 2016-17 Big Sky Preseason All-Conference Team Player Year Pos. MONTANA BASKETBALL REBOUND LEADER: Fabijan Krslovic s 12 rebounds vs Wyoming in Missoula on 11/14 was a new career high for the junior from Australia. His previous career high was 11. HOME OPENERS: Montana s 73-72 loss vs Wyoming on 11/14 was the first home opener loss for the Griz since 2013 vs San Francisco - also a one-point loss - 75-74 WELCOME SAYEED: True freshman guard Sayeed Pridgett burst on the scene against Wyoming, coming off the bench to set a then-careerhigh 20 points in his first-ever game at Dahlberg Arena. 2016-17 SEASON NOTES KINGS OF THE ROAD: Montana traveled a grand total of 14,790 miles during what is rightly considered the most difficult nonconference schedule in program history, facing only D-I opponents. ACCOLADES FOR KRSLOVIC: Junior forward Fabijan Krslovic was named the College Sports Madness Big Sky Player of the Week on Dec. 12 after a double-double display against San Jose State, adn was just two steals shy of a triple-double with eight. On Dec. 13, Krslovic was named Big Sky Player of the Week by the league for the first time in his career. It was also the first Big Sky Player of the Week award for the Griz in 2016-17. A MILESTONE FOR DECUIRE: Head coach Travis DeCuire became the second-fastest coach in UM history to reach 50-wins following the Grizzlies 89-68 win over UNC on 1/12/17. The fastest coach to 50 wins is Blaine Taylor, De- Cuire s mentor and former head coach. LOPEZ CHASING HISTORY: Senior Jack Lopez is on course to post one of, if not the best, seasons in Montana history from behind the three-point line. Lopez is in the mix to break Mike Warhank s 99-00 record for highest 3-point percentage of 49.5 percent. Lopez is currently shooting.46.3 from three-point land, down from 50 percent halfway through the season. AND WELCOME JARED: Redshirt freshman Jared Samuelson also had a big outing in hisfirst game at Dahlberg Arena against WYO, scoring 15 points. A FAMILY TRADITION: Jared s dad, Shawn Samuelson from Broadus, Mont., played for the Grizzlies from 1993-96, and is ranked fifth in school history with 791 career rebounds, and 11th in scoring with 1,293 career points. His grandfather George Samuelson also played for the Griz in the early 1950 s. George was a 6-5, 202lb center from Glendive, Mont. GFELLER CLOSING IN ON RECORD: They don t call senior guard Brandon Gfeller three-feller for nothing. So far in his four years at Montana, Gfeller has drained a whopping 200 three-pointers. The Colfax, Wash., native is closing in on Kevin Criswell s 2006 school record of 218 three-pointers, needing just 19 more to set a new Montana record. Gfeller has drained 28 triples so far this season and hit 72 last season. GOOD WORKS: Gfeller earned Montana s nomination for the 2017 Allstate NABC Good Works Team, recognizing student-athletes at all levels of college basketball whose charitable involvement and altruistic acts stand out amongst all other student-athletes participating in the sport. Gfeller is one of only four student-athletes in the Big Sky Conference and one of 111 NCAA D-I student-athletes to earn a nomination to the Good Works Team. GRIZ TAKE THE LEAD: Montana took a 7-6 lead in the all-time series against San Jose State following December s 81-62 win. The series dates back to 1948 when George Dahlberg was coaching the Griz. Montana is now 4-1 all-time against the Spartans in Missoula. The last time SJSU came to town was in 1992, a 55-51 win for the Griz under Blaine Taylor. Krslovic set a new career high in rebounds against Milwaukee the week before with 13, and followed that game up with 13 more rebounds against San Jose State. BIG ROAD WIN: The Montana men s basketball team picked up its first true road win of the year and snapped a 14-game nonconference losing streak on the road as the Griz ground out a 71-63 win over the UC Riverside Highlanders in Riverside, Calif., on Dec. 17. Before then, the Griz hadn t won a true nonconverence road game since 2014, when Montana defeated Seattle Univ. in Seattle during head coach Travis DeCuire s first season at the helm. GRIZ IN THE COMMUNITY: Members of the Montana men s basketball team helped make the holidays a little brighter for kids in Missoula on Mon., Dec. 19, taking a time out from the court to mentor the students at C.S. Porter Middle School. With their final exams complete, Grizzlies Fabijan Krslovic, Jamar Akoh, Trever Spoja and Michael Oguine along with assistant coach Rachi Wortham shared their wisdom and stories of basketball, school, and the life of a student-athlete with C.S. Porter s sixth, seventh and eighth graders. Over the fall semester, University of Montana student-athletes spent over 1,649 combined hours volunteering in and around Missoula as part of the Griz Life program for student-athlete development. That breaks down to an average of over five and a half hours per-student-athlete in the fall semester alone. GFELLER MAKES FIRST START: Senior guard Brandon Gfeller made his first start of the year against Idaho as Coach DeCuire continues to modify his starting lineup. He made an immediate impact, scoring 14 points off four three-pointers in 21 minutes of action. RARE ROAD SWEEP: Montana became the first team in the Big Sky Conference to sweep the Idaho/Eastern Washington road swing since Idaho rejoined the league in 2014 the week of Jan. 5-7, 2017. It s also the first time Montana completed the sweep since 1994, when current head coach Travis DeCuire was a senior at UM. LOSS STREAK: Montana had not suffered a four-game losing streak in Big Sky Conference play since the 2003-04 season when the Griz lost six-straight conference games under Pat Kennedy. STREAK CONTINUES: Montana s win over Montana State on Feb. 4 in Missoula was the 13th-straight victory for the Griz in the rivalry. ALL TIED UP: After 294 games, the UM/MSU rivalry is now tied in the all-time results column, with the Griz and Cats each posessing 147 wins each, dating back to 1905. EVEN POINT SPREAD: Following Montana s 90-84 win over Montana State on Feb. 4, the Grizzlies had scored exactly the same amount of points as their opponents on the season. UM had scored 1,776 points, while opponents had scored 1,776 points against them. NATION S FEWEST TURNOVERS: In Montana s overtime loss to Weber State on Dec. 31, The Griz gave up only a single turnover. No other team in the nation has given up only one turnover in a game yet this year. PERIMETER DEFENSE: Against Sac. State on Feb. 16, Montana held the Hornets scoreless from behind the three-point line, the first time UM hasn t allowed a three under head coach Travis DeCuire. NO FREEBIES: The Grizzlies did not take a single trip to the free throw line in the first half against Sac. State on Feb. 16. It s the only half this season UM has not gotten off at least one free throw in a half of basketball. BREAKING THE STREAK: February s loss to Sac. State was also the first time all season Montana lost when holding its opponent to 70-or-less points. The final score was 67-65. CLOSE IT OUT: Montana s 85-82 win over Portland State in Missoula was only the second win for the Griz this season when the final margin was four points or less. ANOTHER MILESTONE FOR DECUIRE: The win over PSU was also DeCuire s 20th career Big Sky Conference win at home in his threeyear tenure. After the win, he was 20-7 at home.
