The Carnival is a twilight event starting at 2pm and going to 7pm at the Murtoa Swimming Pool. As such the year 7-12 students do not have to come to school on Tuesday. I would like to invite Parents/Guardians and friends to join us for the carnival as all year 7-12 students are expected to attend. Students are also expected to make their own way to the pool. Please note: The regular bus services will not be operating except for the Horsham big bus. It will be running on a revised timetable that will be passed onto relevant students. Week 4 Term 1 Uniform Congratulations and a big thank you to the overwhelming majority of students who are wearing correct school uniform with pride. You look sensational. All students have a hat on in the yard and are making a strong effort to do the right thing during this very warm weather. Little things make a big difference. Could parents please support our efforts and check the small things like students having their hat at school? Royal Flying Doctor Service The F-6 students will have a great day on Monday February 20 when the Royal Flying Doctor Service visits the college. They are bringing a flight simulator for the visit and every student in the F-6 area will get a chance to learn about the service and experience a ride in the simulator. I hope they have a great time! AFL Bulldogs Player visit 4 players from the reigning AFL premier s football team the Bulldogs will visit the college on Tuesday morning. They will spend time with the F-6 students and talk about life skills, their journey to football at the Bulldogs and what it was like to win the premiership. Can I encourage parents and guardians to please ask the students about the visit when they get home on Tuesday? The players will do an open training session in Horsham on Tuesday morning before coming out to Murtoa. VCE study day Our year 12 VCE students will attend the annual VCE study day in Horsham this Friday. These sessions are important in that they give the students direction and good solid advice on how to approach their study during this very demanding year. School Council Elections Nominations for parents have now opened and if you are interested a nomination form is available from the general office. Nominations close 4pm on Monday February 27. Please see the information in last week s newsletter if you wish to more about the role and the time requirements. Camps, Sports and Excursions Fund (CSEF) The Camps, Sports and Excursions Fund help ensure that no student misses out on the opportunity to join their classmates for important, educational and fun activities. It is part of making Victoria the Education State and the Government's commitment to breaking the link between a student's background and their achievements. CSEF will be provided to eligible families to cover the costs of school trips, camps and sporting activities. If you hold a valid means tested concession card or are a temporary foster parent, you may be eligible for CSEF. The allowance is paid to the school to use towards expenses relating to camps, excursions or sporting activities for the benefit of your child. The annual CSEF amount per student is: o $125 per student in the F-6 area of the college and o $225 per student in the year 7-12 area of the college How to Apply: Contact the school office to obtain a CSEF application form. The week that was! (Week 3 Term 1) School Council The first meeting for 2017 occurred last Tuesday. All the reports that were presented and the items discussed in general business indicated that the college has started the year quite well. This was the last meeting for the 2016 council. I would like to thank the outgoing staff for their tireless efforts in helping to make this college a better educational institution. Thank you to Mrs Rachelle Chapman and Mr Brad Venn. Year 7 Camp to Roses Gap Last Wednesday saw the year 7 cohort head off to Roses Gap in the Grampians for the annual year 7 camp. The students spent 3 days doing a range of exciting activities but the overriding aim of the camp was to get the students to know each other and get ready for 6 years of secondary education. The camp went very well from all reports. Thank you to Mr Shane Williams for organising and running the camp. I would also like to thank Mrs Leanne Jenion and Mrs Anne Sudholz for helping to make this camp a great start to secondary schooling for the 2017 Year 7 cohort. Wimmera Sport Stars of the Year The Wimmera Sport Stars of the year award ceremony was held on Friday February 10 in Horsham. Laelah Robertson and Cleo Baker were nominated for the Wimmera Sports Stars for the month of October 2016 in the sport of volleyball. They attended the ceremony and were presented with their awards by Bianca Chatfield who represented Australia at Netball. Congratulations to both girls. SECONDARY Twilight Swimming Carnival INFORMATION Date: Tuesday 21 th February 2017 Time: Location: 2pm 6.30-7:00pm Murtoa Pool Students need to arrive at the pool by 2pm at the latest. Secondary students are not required at school in the morning as there are no classes for secondary students on this day. This is a compulsory school day and it is expected that all students will attend. Students who attend our sports days (swimming, athletics and cross-country) are eligible for participation in other sporting competitions such as basketball, tennis, etc. Students who do not attend without a valid excuse are NOT eligible to participate in other sporting competitions. Students are not permitted to leave the pool during the sports. Parents: Parents, families and friends are encouraged to attend to support the students and their events. We are also seeking parents to swim in the PARENTS vs. STUDENT vs STAFF relay, so bring your togs! Food: It is yet to be confirmed whether or not the SRC students will be running a BBQ as a fundraiser. The pool canteen will be open for light refreshments. Seating: Parents may wish to bring their own chairs. Sun safety: Please remember to wear a broad brimmed hat and t-shirt, and apply sunscreen and insect repellent (if required) regularly throughout the day. Clothing: Fancy dress in your HOUSE COLOURS as well as swimming gear, rash top, towel, goggles (if required). Please note: The swimming carnival runs as a school day and it is expected that all students will attend. Any student who does not attend will be deemed absent and will need to provide a written note explaining their absence. Travel Arrangements Parents of secondary student bus travellers (except those who travel from Horsham) are advised that they will need to provide students with transport to and from the pool. IMPORTANT: For ALL families wishing to access the conveyance allowance for 2017. To be eligible a student must: - A Victorian resident - School aged and enrolled (3) three or more days per week at a school, and - Attend their closest government or non-government school/campus, appropriate to their year level, at which admission is permissible, and is located outside the Melbourne metropolitan conveyance boundary - Reside 4.8km or more by the shortest practicable route from that school/campus attended If approved the allowance payable is based on the one way distance to make the journey to and from school. If you feel you are eligible please contact the office to receive an application form before Friday 24 th February, 2017. For families who have already received a conveyance allowance in the past you must REAPPLY. NEW APPLICATION FORMS MUST BE DONE. Training & sign up will commence on in Wed 15th March at the Murtoa college stadium. Games are played at 9am each Saturday morning at Horsham City Netball Assn courts. Competition starts on Sat 22nd April. Exciting news this year McKenzie Goodin has volunteered to be an assistant coach & help out with the team. NET SET GO The net set go sessions will commence on Wednesday 26th April from 4.00 till 4.45pm & will run for the duration of term 2. Net set go is for beginner junior netballers aged 5-7.
