SHODAN 1 ST DAN 12 years old (minimum) NIDAN 2 ND DAN 14 years old (minimum) 2
SHUKOKAI / SHITO-RYU SYLLABUS Persons taking grades are required to be familiar with the following techniques, though they may not be asked to demonstrate all of them. 9 TH KYU RED BELT In SHIZEN DACHI HEIKO (YOI DACHI) demonstrate the following: Choku-tsuki, Mae Ken- tsuki, Ura- tsuki. Gyaku-tsuki, Mae Ken-tsuki, and Oi -tsuki, Mae- Geri. Basic combinations: 1a, 1b through to 3a, 3b. KUMITE: Kihon Kumite (one step sparring) 8 TH KYU YELLOW BELT In SHINZEN DACHI HEIKO (YOI DACHI) demonstrate the following: Ura-Ken Uchi, Jodan Shuto Uke,Hiji ate Mawashi Mawashi-Geri. Basic combinations: 1a, 1b through to 5a, 5b. Demonstrate power and shock in the impact pads with the following Gyaka-Tsuki and Mae-Geri. KATA: Pinan Nidan, plus Bunkai KUMITE: Sanbon Kumite (3 step sparring) 3
7 TH KYU ORANGE BELT In SHIZEN DACHI HEIKO demonstrate the following: Jodan Mawashi- Tsuki, Jodan Age Uke, Chudan Uke, Age - Tsuki Jodan Yoko Geri Basic combinations: 1a, 1b through to 7a, 7b. Demonstrate power and shock on the impact pads with the following Gyaka -Tsuki, Mae- Geri, Yoko- Geri KATA: Pinan Shodan plus (Bunkai) KUMITE: Ippon Ju-Kumite 6 TH KYU GREEN BELT In SHIZEN DACHI HEIKO demonstrate the following: Chudan Soto Uke, Jodan Shuto Uchi. Ushiro Geri. Basic combinations: 1a, 1b through to 9a, 9b. Demonstrate powers and shock on the impact pads with the following Ushiro Geri, Sukuto Geri, Oi Tsuki, Hiji Ate, Jodan Age Tsuki. KATA: Pinan Sandan. JU-KUMITE. 4
5 TH KYU BLUE BELT In SHIZEN DACHI HEIKO demonstrate the following: Kage-tsuki, Ago-uchi tsuki. Kosa Mae-Geri (front foot). Basic combinations: 1a, 1b through to 9a, 9b. Demonstrate power and shock on the impact pads with the following Gyaka-tsuki, Oi-tsuki, Mae-Geri, Mawashi-Geri, Ushiro-Geri, Sokuto-Geri. KATA: Pinan Yondan, Pinan Godan plus Bunkai, Tensho. JU-KUMITE. 4 TH KYU PURPLE BELT In SHIZEN DACHI HEIKO demonstrate the following: Tettsui-Uchi, Haito Uchi. Basic combinations: 1a, 1b through to 9a, 9b. Demonstrate power and shock on the impact pads with the following Gyaka-tsuki, Oi-tsuki, Mae-Geri, Mawashi-Geri, Ushiro-Geri, Sokuto-Geri. KATA: Juroku, plus Bunkai JU-KUMITE. 5
3 RD KYU BROWN BELT (1 BLACK TAB) Basic combinations: 1a, 1b through to 9a, 9b Demonstrate on the impact pads but with increased power and shock in relation to body weight using the following Gyaka-tsuki, Oi-tsuki, Mae-Geri, Mwashi- Geri, Ushiro- Geri, Sukuto- Geri, KATA: 5 Pinans, Bassai-Dai, Naihanchin- Shodan without mistakes plus Bunkai. JU-KUMITE. 2 ND KYU BROWN BELT (2 BLACK TABS) Basic combinations: 1a, 1b through to 9a, 9b Demonstrate on the impact pads but with increased power and shock in relation to body weight using the following Gyaka-tsuki, Oi-tsuki, Mae-Geri, Mwashi- Geri, Ushiro- Geri, Sukuto- Geri, KATA: Annanko, Bassai-Dai, plus Bunkai JU-KUMITE: 3 spars minimum. 6
1 ST KYU BROWN BELT (3 BLACK TABS) All before plus: Demonstrate on the impact pads but with increased power and shock in relation to body weight using the following Gyaka-tsuki, Oi-tsuki, Mae-Geri, Mwashi- Geri, Ushiro- Geri, Sukuto- Geri, Basic combinations: 1a, 1b through to 9a, 9b KATA: Matsukaze, Jiin, Seienchin, plus Bunkai JU-KUMITE: 3 spars minimum. SHODAN 1 ST DAN BLACK BELT (1 RED TAB) KATA: Annanko, Seienchin, Jitte, plus Bunkai Must have trained for a minimum of 9 months since obtaining 1 st Kyu and have trained for a minimum of 3 years. Must be proficient in all the foregoing techniques and combinations and possess a wide knowledge of Japanese terminology and pronunciation. Must know at least 6 major Kata in addition to the 5 Pinan. Must be training regularly with a minimum of 2 nights per week, should be aware of and demonstrate good Dojo etiquette and should be proficient in Ju-Kumite. Must be able to demonstrate combination techniques in addition to the basic 9 combinations. Must be able to demonstrate on the impact pads punching and kicking techniques, shock and penetration, in proportion to his/her weight. 7
NIDAN 2 ND DAN BLACK BELT (2 RED TABS) Pad work as before with additional shock and power. KATA: Shiho - Kosokun, Saifa, Koshiki Rohai, plus Bunkai. JU-KUMITE SANDAN 3 RD DAN BLACK BELT (3 RED TABS) Pad work as before with additional shock and power. KATA: Kururunfa, Seipai, Kosokun-Sho, plus Bunkai. JU - KUMITE. YONDAN 4 TH DAN BLACK BELT (4 RED TABS) KATA: Shisochin, Chinto, Kosokun-Dai, Jion plus Bunkai 8
GODAN 5 TH DAN BLACK BELT (5 RED TABS) Suparinpei, Nipaipo, plus any three Kata from the following plus Bunkai: Joruku Koshiki- Rohai Naihanchin-Shodan Sanchin Shinpa Naihanchin-Nidan Seiryu Kosokun-Dai Naihanchin-Sandan Jitte Shiho-Kosokun Niseishi Join Chintei Chinto Rohai Shodan Rohai Nidan Rohai Sandan Gekisai Ichi Gekisai Ni Wunshu A pre-requisite for grading of SANDAN and above is that all Karate-Ka participate in the organising and running of association events. From 4 th KYU (Purple Belt) To 5 th DAN (Black Belt) 5 Pinan Kata plus 18 major Kata is expected to be known from the following: Juroko, Shisochin, Bassai-Dai Tensho, Annanko, Kosokun-Dai Matsukaze, Join, Jiin Suparimpa, Seinchin, Nipaipo Jitte, Chinto, Shiho - Kosokun Naihanchin-Shodan, Saifa Koshiki -Rohai, Kurarunfa Seipai, Kosokun-Sho 9
