19 th Southwest Open 2011 A Fourth of July Tradition PRELIMINARY WINNER REPORT July 1 st July 10 th 2011 American Legion Post 73, 5000 S.E. 24 th, Del City, Oklahoma The 19 th Annual Southwest Open 2011 hosted at the American Legion Post 73 in Del City was another great success this year with over 150 registered players throughout the week. There was a broad geographic coverage with players coming in from Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma, and Texas which really made for a lot of fun and competition. The camp ground ran out of electric/water camp sites on day 1 of the tournament which was a first in many years and if one left, another filled the spot quickly. Next year will be the big 20 th annual celebration for the SW Open, so those planning to use the camp ground area may want to plan ahead and come early to ensure getting a spot, especially if your camper is not self-contained w/ generator. The Legion will be making some electrical upgrades to the camping area before next year also. There will be some changes in event sequence next year to accommodate having the free BBQ on Independence Day (July 4 th ). The 20 th Annual SW Open Flyer should be available to all soon. The dates have been tentatively set for June 29 th July 8 th. The 4 th falls on Wednesday in 2012, so the BBQ and awards ceremony are planned for Wednesday, July 4 th, rather than the traditional Thursday night. Event sequence (order of events) will be made to accommodate this change to have the least amount of impact on the ongoing events. The awards ceremonies included the Legion Commander giving appreciation awards to the tournament staff: Tom & Lynda French (Tournament Directors & Brackets), Joyce Gamble (front desk and robins), Mark Gray (for a great job with the Sponsor Sales), Glen Tubbs/Alben McDonald/Ron Sosovec (for a fantastic job with board setup and adjustments), Jett Williamson (photographer), John Williamson/Matt Kodesh/Alben McDonald (spotters). The shuffleboard community gave Appreciation Awards to Larry Creakbaum (long time promoter and supporter of shuffleboard tournaments nationwide), and to Frank James (AML 73 Legion Commander) & Staff for providing such a great venue with great playing boards, great food and drink with superb service to all. You will find the preliminary winner results for the SW Open 2011 eleven events on the following pages. If you see any errors (e.g., name spellings, etc.); please send an email to lynda@tableshuffleboard.org so that the final report will incorporate any/al updates or changes that may need to be made. The MVP (Most Valuable Player) awards for 5 categories (MVPs receive MVP Shirt & Plaques this year) -1s Mike Taylor (close runner up was David Williams Sr. by only one point which hedged on the grueling match in the last Bring Partner event finals on Sunday) 0s Roger Holloway (btw Roger also accumulated the highest number of points for all rated categories) 1s Mike Melton (great seeing Mike return to playing after being out of the game for several years) 2s Rick Jensen/Jimmy Galvez (tied) 3s/4s (Div II) Mitchell Miller (unrated player raters pay attention to this one) Obie Pierce won the King of the Robins (accumulated the most points during the 27 official robins which had a total of 52 unique player participants where either a King or Queen of the Robins is awarded runner up was Char Waugaman of Colorado). Johnny Wright of Missouri won the TSA Member Drawing for a set of weights. The Ladies Auxiliary also ran periodic 50/50 raffles and gift item raffles throughout the week with a large # of winners for those drawings.
