The Old Man The Monthly Newsletter of the Magothy River Sailing Association Calendar of Upcoming Events - Dec. 1 Wine & Cheese/Elections November 2016 - Dec. 10 Parade of Lights Commodore s Comments Photo by Mike Bonham It wasn't all that long ago we were sitting in the Mil-Bur Park enjoying the summer breeze with a heat index of over 100 degrees. The breeze was from the south at 12 to 15 knots, so much so we had to tape down the edges of the tablecloths while the trees provided the welcome shade. The hot dogs, hamburgers and Italian sausages were hot and plentiful, and the side dishes were some of our members best creations for our annual MRSA summer picnic. Fast forward to this November, the days are getting shorter, and now the conversation is: "Have you winterized yet? Are you on the hard?" Although, there have been days in the 70's and low 80's, we all know what's coming-- 1

the MRSA elections. Yes, it's that time of year. On December 1st, we will have our annual Wine, Cheese & Election of Officers meeting beginning at 6:30 pm at the Belvedere Yacht Club. Please bring a dish or dessert to share. MRSA will provide the all the beverages and the list of candidates to be voted into office. The nominating committee has completed their task of lining up the new candidates for the 2017 Magothy River Sailing Association sailing season. We would like to thank the members of our nominating committee, Rich Hughes, Andy Nauman and Dennise Fath for their time and effort in preparing our slate of candidates. The candidates for the 2017 MRSA sailing season are: Commodore--Dennise Fath Vice Commodore--Open Rear Commodore--Dave Prucnal Fleet Captain Cruising--Ron Swank Fleet Captain Junior Training--Evan Clayton Secretary--John Nicholson Fleetmaster--John Baumert Treasurer--Homer Sandridge As you may have noticed, the Vice Commodore's position is open. If you have an interest in joining a great sailing organization as a officer or helping in some capacity, please contact any officer or nominating committee member for further information. We would like to recognize one of our long time members and Junior Training Registrar, Joe Tierney. Joe is stepping down from serving as the registrar for Junior Training for over the past 10 years. Getting the Junior Training season started with the forms and schedules, has been a challenge that Joe has stayed on top of, not to mention keeping the the students and parents well informed. Thank you, Joe. So mark your calendar for 12/01, the Wine/Cheese/Election meeting and 12/10 for the Parade of Lights in Annapolis. Thanks, Dave Pirone, Commodore, MRSA 2

Wrap-Up Schooner Cruise - Thursday, October 13, 2016 Eight sailors took off from work and retirement activities to spend the day on a nice October Thursday and to check out the start of the Great Chesapeake Bay Schooner Race. Nineteen schooners ranging in size from the 25-foot schooner, Tom Swift, to the 125-foot schooner, Liberty Clipper, sailed or motored from Baltimore under the Bay Bridge and waited for the signal to start the race right outside of Annapolis headed to Portsmouth. MRSA was represented on board Ravenous with photographers looking for wind (there was none for the start) and great photos. We did have fun and plenty of good food, beverages and conversation. Luckily, the wind picked up as we headed home, and the sails went up to allow a nice sail into the Magothy. FROSTBITE CRUISE WRAP-UP By Debbie Lund The last cruise of the season was to Annapolis on October 29 th and 30 th. Mark and Marty Walker with two guests aboard Celerity and John and Debbie Lund aboard Min Van IV sailed to Annapolis. The weather was great for the end of October. The Walkers and Lunds were joined by other MRSA members who came by land yacht at the Federal House Restaurant for dinner. The other members were Dick and Marianne Kammann, Rich and Toni Hughes, Homer and Sherry Sandridge, Dave and Denise Pirone, Ed and Peggy Poe and Kathy Polk. 3

This was probably the last cruise for the Lunds on Min Van IV. We have bought a new boat, and we took delivery of the boat on November 4 th. Next season, we will be cruising on a Bavaria 37 named Chapter Three. It will be a long winter! Anyone want to buy a Hunter 35.5? Future Events Wine & Cheese Membership Meeting We will start December with our Wine and Cheese membership meeting, on December 1st at 6:30 pm at the Belvedere Yacht Club, located on 419 Alameda Parkway in Arnold. Please bring your favorite cheese or heavy appetizers, salad, or dessert to share with everyone. MRSA will provide all the beverages. Elections will be held for the 2017 Board. So, be prepared to vote or nominate someone from the floor with their prior consent. We still have the Vice Commodore position open. Parade of Lights The annual Parade of Lights will be held on December 10th, starting at 6 pm. Annapolis will be very busy, so allow enough time for traffic conditions. Again, MRSA has a room at the Annapolis Marriott. Room 620 has a great view of all the action. Please bring a snack or finger food to share with other members and families. Refreshments will 4

be provided by MRSA. Hopefully, the weather will cooperate and we will feel as comfortable as we have in previous years.
