The Toreros proved to be too much for the Pacific Tigers as senior defender Natalie Garcia, junior midfielder Sierra Ferreira, senior forward Stephanie Ochs and freshman midfielder Mariah Butera each tallied goals in the victory over Pacific on Friday evening. The victorious Toreros scored the only goal they would need in the 15th minute of action, as Garcia found herself in the middle of a crowded Tigers goal box, and after a floury of activity, Garcia was able to re-direct a rebound off a shot by Elissa Magracia, and put it into the back of the net to give USD the early 1-0 lead. The Toreros flexed their muscles as they stretched the lead with goals from Ferreira in the 46th minute, Ochs in the 50th minute and Butera 76th minute. Senior goalkeeper Courtney Parsons recorded her first shutout of the season in goal for the Toreros, as she allowed no goals and recorded four saves. The action continued in Torero Stadium on Sunday afternoon against the Kansas Jayhawks as the Toreros tallied their first loss of their 2011 campaign. The Toreros led 1-0 over the Jayhawks for the majority of the game with yet another goal from senior defender Natalie Garcia. Garcia s goal came in the 28th minute of play as the Toreros charged in Jayhawk territory, and after a failed Torero cross, Garcia was there with the put back to give USD a 1-0 lead. The Jayhawks answered back in the 82nd minute with a goal off a rebound by Ingrid Vidal, tying up the game. Vidal went on to score her second goal of the game in the 86th minute of play, which put the Jayhawks ahead the Toreros for a final score of 2-1, leaving the Toreros with a 3-1-0 record.

BOUNCING BACK: The Toreros head back to action this weekend in Torero Stadium as they face the University of Alabama on Friday at 5:00 p.m. and again on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. against the University of Central Florida. Both opponents have their share of accumulated accolades, which put the Toreros in a great position to get back on the right path against two top-notch programs in the young 2011 season. SCOUTING THE ALABAMA CRIMSON TIDE: Alabama begins their 2011 campaign with an overall record of 3-1-1. Their only loss came in their last match against No. 20 Memphis with a final score of 1-0. Alabama returns standout senior goalkeeper Justine Bernier and sophomore midfielder Molly Atherton. Bernier joins USD forward Stephanie Ochs on the 2011 MAC Herman Trophy Watch List as one of the top female collegiate soccer players in the country. Atherton was also named to the SEC All-Freshman team for her work in the 2010-11 season and currently leads Alabama in shot attempts with 14, while freshman forward Lauren Lee Smith leads with three goals tallied in their young 2011 campaign. SCOUTING THE KNIGHTS OF CENTRAL FLORIDA: The University of Central Florida Knights entered their 2011 season ranked at No. 24 by Soccer America and are currently 1-2-0. The Knights return standout junior forward Tishia Jewell, who was named to last week s TopDrawerSoccer.com s Women s College Soccer Team of the Week and Conference USA s Offensive Player of the Week. Jewell and junior defender Bianca Joswiak lead the Knights with two goals apiece. The Knights defense is led by senior goalkeeper Aline Reis with a 1.00 goals-against-average this season, making nine saves in just two games. NO GOAL FOR YOU: Senior goalkeeper Courtney Parsons recorded her first shutout of the season in goal against the University of the Pacific on Friday evening in Torero Stadium as she allowed no goals and recorded four saves. Parsons has been a dominating force in goal for the Toreros as she has tallied 14 saves this season and 156 saves in her past three years as a Torero. After last weekend s performance she adds eight saves and one shutout to her resume. A TORERO FREE FOR ALL: Senior defender Natalie Garcia, junior midfielder Sierra Ferreira, senior forward Stephanie Ochs and freshman midfielder Mariah Butera each tally a goal in the Toreros shutout over University of the Pacific (1-2-0), 4-0, Friday evening in a non-conference match at Torero Stadium. Garcia has two goals on the year, while the three Torero players welcome their first goals of the season. GOAALLLLLL!!!!: Freshman midfielder Mariah Butera recorded her first goal of her collegiate soccer career at USD against the Tigers of Pacific last Friday in Torero Stadium. The goal came in the 76th minute of action when Butera was able corral a pass from junior midfielder Sierra Ferreira, and slip it past the Pacific goalkeeper to put the match at its final of 4-0. Butera hails as a local from Encinitas, CA, and how sweet it was to hit the back of the net for the first time in her own backyard. CATCH THE TOREROS AT WORK: All San Diego women s soccer home matches can be followed via Gametracker on the Toreros athletic web site at www.usdtoreros. com. Gametracker is a service of CBS, the official web provider for San Diego athletics, and is a real time update of the action. Selected San Diego road matches are also available via Gametracker. To see if Gametracker is available for a game go to San Diego Events at the top-right of the home page. If Gametracker is available there will be a Gametracker link. CAN YOU SEE ME: All USD home matches, as well as select road matches, will now be streamed live via video on the athletics department website. Fans can watch all the action live from the comfort of their home by logging onto usdtoreros.com. There is no cost for this service.

MAC HERMAN TROPHY WATCHLIST SHOWDOWN: Senior striker Stephanie Ochs of the University of San Diego women s soccer team has been named to the NSCAA Missouri Athletic Club s Herman Trophy Watch List for the 2011 season alongside Alabama s senior goalkeeper Justine Bernier. The Mac Herman Trophy is the highest individual award in intercollegiate soccer. The recipients are selected by head coaches of NCAA Division I programs who are members of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA). These two out of just 46 MAC Herman Trophy Award candidates, Ochs and Bernier, match-up against one another this Friday at 5:00 p.m. in Torero Stadium. With Ochs on the offensive attack and Bernier in goal on defense, the night is sure to promise a showdown between two of the top performing collegiate soccer athletes in the nation. Ochs, a 5-9 senior from San Diego, paced the Toreros offense last season as she scored a career-high eight goals to go along with a career-high seven assists for a team-best 23 points. She has recorded two career hat tricks while at the University of San Diego, one of which came this season in the victory over USC, 3-1, on Aug. 21, 2011. Ochs has totaled four goals in just four games played in the very young 2011 soccer season. Bernier has also tallied her share of national and conference accolades as she takes the field this year as a senior for the University of Alabama with a total of 338 career saves, 14 shutouts and sports a 1.36 goals against average. Voting for the MAC Hermann Trophy is conducted in late November, when a field of 15 semifinalists is reduced to three finalists. Those three will be invited to the Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis on Friday, Jan. 6, 2012, where a news conference will be held to announce the winner, followed by a banquet to honor the three finalists. OCHS WITH NATIONAL RECOGNITION: The individual awards for Ochs continue to roll in, as the San Diego native was named Soccer America s National Player of the Week, and she was named to both Soccer America s and Collegesoccer360.com s national team s of the week, for her performance in the opening weekend of play (Aug. 19-21). Ochs has continued to be red hot for USD, as she tallied her fourth goal of the season against Pacific, which was USD s third of four goals scored in a 4-0 win over Pacific. Ochs was again taken down inside the goal box, which set up a penalty kick situation. Ochs then had no trouble putting the ball into the back of the net. She leads the Toreros with four goals this season. IN THE POLLS: The University of San Diego women s soccer team move to No. 24 in the Soccertimes top- 25 ranking, while dropping out of the NSCAA and Soccer America top-25 national rankings after falling to Kansas, 2-1, last Sunday in Torero Stadium. The Toreros were ranked as high as No. 20 in last week s national polls. Neither Alabama nor Central Florida are ranked in any of the top-25 polls. 2011 West Coast Conference Standings WCC OVERALL Team W L T Pts.
