This year marks the 100th anniversary of the start of the First World War and with it comes four years of commemorations. The war began with the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo on June 28th, 1914, and ended on Armistace Day, November 11th, 1918. From the time of its occurrence until the approach of World War II in 1939, it was called simply the World War or the Great War, and thereafter the First World War or World War I. The official commemorations will begin in Sarajevo with a week long series of events culminating on June 28th. It is being partially funded by four of the main protagonists in the war, the UK, France, Austria and Germany. France, which saw the worst fighting of the whole war including the pivotal battles of Marne, Somme and Verdun, has invited all the nations involved to join the Bastille Day parade on July 14th this year. Belgium, which contains the killing fields of Passchendaele, Ypres and Mons, will begin its commemorations on August 4th, the day it was invaded with a ceremony at Mons which will also include representatives from the UK and Germany. This booklet has been prepared by Ger Browne in conjunction with Clare Roots Society to commemorate this anniversary of the War but in particular to remember those with Clare Roots who lost their lives in the Great War. Plans are in place to create a memorial in the Friars Walk area of Ennis to commemorate Clare men and women who died in the Great War. On this memorial it is planned a listing of names the Clare dead. A number of lists exist in various publications and other sources. The accuracy and completeness of these lists depends on the criteria used in drawing them up. They may include names of people born in other counties of Ireland or abroad but who enlisted in Clare for the Great War. It is now timely to open the debate on how to properly draw up a definitive listing. This publication is intended to continue the process. If readers of this booklet are aware of additional names or corrections to the contents of this booklet, Clare Roots Society would be pleased to collect these and forward them to the committee of the memorial for consideration. Please refer such entries to the Secretary at www.clareroots.org CLARE ROOTS SOCIETY, January 2014. 2 2

Congratulations to The Clare Roots Society on this publication on the centenary of the Great War. It is estimated that 7000 Clare soldiers served in WW1. About 700 are thought to have lost their lives. Clare had not seen such loss of life since the famine. Some joined early in the war with a sense of adventure and travel or Volunteering to be part of history! as was said then. The well known War of Independence figure Tom Barry said, I went to the war for no other reason than that I wanted to see what war was like, to get a gun, to see new countries and to feel a grown man. Some joined early in the war due to unemployment and were referred to as economic conscripts at the time. Others already had or joined to share the experiences of war. By the time the war broke out some of Clare men who fought in the war had emigrated and joined up out of their own free will or were conscripted in their migrant countries. A significant number of the Clare men and women who joined the war effort did so to further Irelands cause for independence and Home Rule. Many were from volunteer units around the county and joined following the directions of political, business and religious leaders of the time. While they were away the 1916 Rising took place and those who returned to Ireland found a changed attitude to the one they left. The War of independence had commenced and many of those returning soldiers were seen as traitors, or at least misguided in their intentions. The efforts that some had made at furthering Irelands case for independence had been in vain. Many were treated as outcasts in society, suffered discrimination in their efforts to get work, and many lived in poverty. Quite a number of those who returned suffered from post traumatic stress or shell shock as it was referred to then, and slipped into alcoholism to banish the memories of their experiences. A committee to remember these men and women was formed a few years ago by Peadar McNamara (RIP), Cannon Bob Hanna and Fr. Tom Hogan and as you are aware have been holding a Remembrance Service around the 11thNovember each year. It has long been on the agenda of the committee to erect a memorial to Clare s war dead, and help to preserve the memory of a forgotten generation. Such a park would be a great addition to the built and cultural heritage of the town. It would form a focus for learning for history students and afford current and future generations the opportunity to remember a very important and expensive (in terms of lives lost) time in the history of this county. A site has been agreed with Ennis Town Council and fundraising efforts are underway for the project. As we approach the 100th anniversary of WW1, hopefully these efforts along with what has already been done will help secure the memory of this generation of Clare men and women. Keir McNamara Clare Peace Park Initiative 3

4 Over 4,000 Claremen served as soldiers during WW1, which was declared on Aug 4 1914. When it started the Anglo Irish and Nationalist population were equally enthusiastic. This changed after Easter 1916. The largest contingent fought with the Royal Munster Fusiliers, with whom over 170 were killed.

Kilrush had 416 recruits, 106 of which were employees of Glynn s. Ennis had over 1,100 soldiers. This booklet includes the names, compiled by Tom Burnell of over 600 Co Clare men and women who died in military and associated services during WW1 and just after. They died in the service of the British Army, the Australian Army, the New Zealand Army, the American Army, the Indian Army, the Canadian Army, the South African Army, the Royal Navy, the British Mercantile Marine, the Territorial Force Nursing Service, Queen Alexandra s Imperial Nursing Service and Queen Mary s Army Auxiliary Corps. I would to thank Tom Burnell for his permission to publish this booklet, and would highly recommend his book The Clare War Dead to anyone who wishes to learn more about the Clare Men and women who died during WW1. This booklet also includes a brief synopsis of the battles they died in. The reason for this booklet is to promote the building of a Clare Peace Park in Ennis. A provisional site has been proposed opposite the entrance to Glor. This Park would commemorate all Clare people who died in conflicts, including WW1, WW2, the UN and others. 5

6 The 2nd. Royal Munster Fusiliers, in their very first action in France, achieved a military feat unparalleled in modern warfare. A division may perhaps be deployed in an attempt to turn aside or halt an advancing army corps - but for a single battalion to stem the advance of an entire army by their sole action was unprecedented. In fact, less than a battalion strength, just 3 companies of the 2nd. Battalion of The Munsters halted the advance of the German Army for fourteen hours in the area of Oisny & Etreux during the retreat from Mons, thus enabling the rest of the British Army to withdraw to a safe distance of twelve miles. They were outnumbered at odds of over 6 to 1, and when finally defeated, the survivors were congratulated on their supreme bravery by the German soldiers they had fought. Etreux 5

The Last Absolution of the Munsters at Rue de Bois, 1915 by Fortunino Matania. The picture represents an actual incident on May 9th 1915, and depicts the Chaplain, Father Gleeson. With him are Colonel Victor Rickard and Adjutant Captain Filgate, both of whom were killed the following day. In the short period of the attack, the Munsters lost nineteen officers and 374 men. This painting covers an entire wall at the Decorative Arts and History Museum, Collins Barracks, Dublin. Rue Du Bois 7

Ypres was a town of relatively little strategic importance, but of great significance in that it was fought over practically throughout the whole of the war. There was high ground which dominated this battlefield, out to the north, south and east of the town. After the retreat from Mons, the First Battle of Ypres was fought in October/ November 1914. There was fighting around the town for the next four years. Throughout the War, the Allies were determined to hold onto Ypres, and despite fierce attempts to take it, they did. Ypres 8

Almost half a million people died in the trenches and in No Man s Land between 1914 and 1918. Among them not only Germans, French, British and Belgians, but also Moroccans, Algerians, Tunisians,Senegalese, Canadians, Australians, New-Zealanders, South-Africans, Chinese, Indians, Jamaicans and lots of other nationalities. Flanders Gallipoli Gallipoli was one of the Allies great disasters in World War One. Gallipoli was the plan thought up by Winston Churchill to end the war early by creating a new war front that the Central Powers could not cope with. By the time the campaign ended, over 120,000 men had died: more than 80,000 Turkish soldiers and 44,000 British and French soldiers, including over 8500 Australians. In the history of the Great War, the Gallipoli campaign made no large mark. The number of dead, although horrific, pales in comparison with the number that died in France and Belgium during the war. 9

Anglo-French forces began landing at the Greek port of Salonika (now Thessaloniki) on 5 October 1915. The troops were sent to provide military assistance to the Serbs who had recently been attacked by combined German, Austro-Hungarian and Bulgarian armies. The intervention came too late to save Serbia. The front-line remained more or less static until September 1918, when a third offensive was launched. The campaign concluded with the surrender of Bulgaria on 30 September 1918. 10 Salonika There were many epic struggles fought along the banks of the River Tigris; from the seemingly unstoppable advance of the British throughout 1915 to the resurgence of their Turk opposition in 1916 culminating in the British humiliation at Kut-al-Amara in April 1916. British fortunes revived however with the appointment of Sir Frederick Stanley Maude as regional Commander-in-Chief, as success after success finally led to complete British victory in the region in October 1918. Mesopotamia

The Battle of the Somme started in July 1st 1916. It lasted until November 1916. For many people, the Battle of the Somme was the battle that symbolised the horrors of warfare in World War One; this one battle had a marked effect on overall casualty figures and seemed to epitomise the futility of trench warfare. By the end of the battle, the British Army had suffered 420,000 casualties including nearly 60,000 on the first day alone. The French lost 200,000 men and the Germans nearly 500,000. The Somme 11
